For YouTube Live, streaming software and captioning are separate jobs. OBS Studio and Streamlabs Desktop can encode and send your video, but choosing either does not by itself configure captions. YouTube needs caption data delivered with the stream—through eligible English automatic live captions, embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 data, or its caption-ingestion workflow for events. The best setup depends on your language, latency, replay and professional-captioning needs.
Choose the caption route before choosing an encoder
YouTube Help puts the key distinction plainly: “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.” An encoder sends the video stream; a separate caption route must supply caption data. YouTube’s documented approaches are automatic live captions, embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions, and caption delivery through a signed ingestion URL. The guidance below reflects YouTube Help pages accessed October 3, 2026; check the current instructions before configuring an event.

- Simple eligible English stream: Try YouTube’s native automatic live captions if normal latency is acceptable and the feature is available to your channel.
- Caption control through an encoder: Use embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 caption data, with an encoder and source that can actually send it.
- Event or professional caption workflow: Use YouTube’s caption-ingestion URL with compatible captioning software or delivery service.
These are closed captions viewers can toggle, not text burned visibly into the video. The cited YouTube guidance covers caption delivery, not overlay workflows.
Compare the options for YouTube Live
| Option | What it does | Caption implications | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube automatic live captions | YouTube generates English captions in Studio for eligible streams, subject to rollout and latency conditions. | No separate caption product is named, but availability, language and replay persistence are limited. | Eligible English streams where automatic captions meet the need. |
| OBS Studio | Free, open-source streaming encoder software that connects to a streaming destination. | OBS is the encoder layer; it does not automatically caption speech based on the cited OBS documentation. Configure a documented YouTube caption path separately. | Creators seeking a flexible encoder and willing to configure a separate caption workflow. |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Streaming software that supports YouTube Live; basic tools are free, with optional Ultra features. | The reviewed Streamlabs guide does not establish built-in YouTube closed-caption generation or ingestion. Verify your separate caption path. | Creators who prefer its creator-tool interface and can confirm caption compatibility. |
| Streamlabs Plugin for OBS | Adds Streamlabs creator features to OBS; the cited guide specifies OBS 28.0.0 or later and Windows availability. | The plugin guide does not claim to provide caption generation. | Windows OBS users who want Streamlabs overlays or widgets alongside a separate caption solution. |
| YouTube-listed event caption tools | YouTube documents Total Eclipse/AccuCap, Case CATalyst BCS, CaptionMaker and StreamText.Net in its event-caption workflow. | These support a caption delivery workflow; verify current versions, vendor setup and whether the service suits your event. | Events needing a supported delivery path or professional caption support. |

When YouTube automatic live captions are enough
YouTube says automatic live captions are English-only and are rolling out to eligible English-language channels streaming at normal latency when professional captions are unavailable. They must be enabled for each live stream; there is no channel-wide switch described in the guidance. This can be the simplest option when the stream is in English, your channel has the feature, and you do not require captions to remain attached to the live broadcast replay.
Enable them for an individual stream
- In YouTube Studio, open the live stream’s settings.
- Choose the stream’s caption settings and enable automatic captions, if the option is available for the stream.
- Check captions during the live broadcast before relying on them for viewers.
YouTube lists rollout eligibility, low or ultra-low latency, unsupported language, poor audio, overlapping speakers and multiple languages as possible reasons automatic captions may not appear. The completed live broadcast does not retain its live automatic captions; YouTube generates VOD captions separately, and those captions may differ.

Use embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
This route is for creators whose encoder and caption source can send embedded caption data. In YouTube Live settings, enable captions and select Embedded 608/708; then configure the encoder to transmit EIA 608/CEA 708 data. Merely selecting OBS or Streamlabs does not prove that such data is being sent—confirm support and configuration in the caption source and encoder documentation.

Set up captions for an event using YouTube’s ingestion URL
For a captioner or supported delivery system, YouTube provides a signed Captions Ingestion URL. This is an event workflow rather than a caption-generating feature of OBS or Streamlabs.
- In YouTube Live settings, turn on closed captions and copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL.
- Provide the URL to the captioner or compatible software, following the vendor’s current setup instructions.
- Configure the broadcast with a 30- or 60-second delay, as YouTube directs for this workflow.
- Check that only one caption feed is assigned to each stream entry point.
- Test the complete video-and-caption path before the event begins.
YouTube’s page lists Total Eclipse/AccuCap version 6.0.0.5 or later, Case CATalyst BCS version 14.52 or later, CaptionMaker version 5.22 or later, and StreamText.Net, described as a cloud caption delivery system compatible with speech-to-text platforms. Confirm that these versions and vendor instructions remain current before purchasing or configuring software; the cited guidance does not compare their prices, accuracy or service levels.

What to check before you commit to a setup
- Caption delivery: Does the workflow send data to YouTube through embedded captions or its ingestion URL, rather than only displaying text in an overlay?
- Language: Is the language supported by the route you intend to use? YouTube’s native automatic live captions described here are English-only.
- Latency: Is normal latency acceptable for native automatic captions, or do you need a different caption workflow? For YouTube’s documented event-ingestion setup, account for its specified broadcast delay.
- Replay: Do you need captions on the finished video? YouTube says live automatic captions disappear after the broadcast and later VOD captions are generated separately.
- Event needs: Does the event call for professional captioning or a captioner-supported workflow rather than platform-generated captions?
- Compatibility and cost: Check the current software version, operating system support, vendor instructions and pricing directly. The official pages reviewed do not establish a full cost, language-coverage or accuracy comparison.
Common caption problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No YouTube automatic captions | Feature not rolled out to the channel, unsupported language, low or ultra-low latency, poor sound, overlapping speakers or multiple languages. | Confirm eligibility and stream settings; improve audio and reduce speaker overlap. If the route does not fit, configure embedded captions or the event ingestion workflow. |
| Encoder is streaming, but no closed captions reach YouTube | The encoder sends video, but no caption data path is configured. | Verify embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 transmission or the signed ingestion URL workflow end to end. |
| Captions are missing from the replay | Live automatic captions are not retained; YouTube creates VOD captions separately. | Check the finished video’s VOD caption availability rather than expecting the live captions to carry over unchanged. |
| Event caption feed fails or arrives incorrectly | Ingestion URL, software compatibility, broadcast delay or feed assignment may be wrong. | Recheck the signed URL, current vendor instructions, YouTube’s 30- or 60-second delay guidance and the one-feed-per-entry-point rule. |
