For an older PC, OBS Studio is the best first streaming app to evaluate because its published compatibility requirements are broad and its setup wizard and performance guidance help you tune the stream to your hardware. That does not mean every PC that opens OBS can stream smoothly: your encoder, resolution, frame rate, game, scene and network all matter.
If your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, the computer does not need to run streaming software at all; the cloud option is covered below.

Which streaming software should you try first?
OBS Studio: a practical first choice
OBS Studio is a sensible starting point for older computers, but there is no supported head-to-head benchmark here proving it always uses less CPU than alternatives. A simple scene in one app can be lighter than a complex scene in another, and capturing a demanding game can matter more than the choice of app.
OBS lists Windows 10 or 11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 or later with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 plus X Window System or Wayland. These are compatibility baselines, not performance guarantees. OBS cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” See the OBS system requirements.

Streamlabs Desktop: check the current requirements first
Streamlabs Desktop is an alternative, but its current requirements page, last updated April 8, 2026, lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 or later and 8 GB RAM minimum. It recommends newer processors, graphics cards, 16 GB or more of RAM and an SSD for resource-intensive use. Confirm the requirements for the exact release and operating system before installing it on an older PC: Streamlabs Desktop System Requirements.
Streamlabs gives 3.6 Mbps or better as a guideline for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms. That is a vendor guideline, not a universal guarantee; the platform’s current stream settings and your available upload speed determine what is workable.

What determines whether an older PC can stream?
Encoding: CPU or hardware encoder
Encoding video takes processing power. If the PC exposes a supported hardware encoder, it can move some encoding work away from the CPU. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF and Intel Quick Sync (QSV), but support and quality vary by hardware generation. In OBS, inspect the encoder choices shown for your computer rather than assuming a GPU or processor brand guarantees a particular encoder. OBS’s hardware encoding guide lists GeForce 750 Ti or 900-series Maxwell and newer for NVENC support, and Intel Core-i 2xxx/Sandy Bridge or newer for QSV; it recommends Haswell/Core-i 4xxx or newer because early QSV quality was low. These are dated compatibility and quality notes, not predictions of smooth performance on a particular stream.

Higher output resolution and frame rate increase the work of rendering and encoding. A simple webcam or screen capture is not equivalent to playing a demanding game while capturing it, layering animated overlays, and running browser and media sources. Start with only the capture source, necessary audio and essential overlays. Add visual elements one at a time and test them with the actual content.

Network upload
A stream can be smooth on the PC but still struggle over an unstable or insufficient upload connection. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard considers network conditions, but the result is a starting point; test against the platform and connection you will actually use.
Set up OBS for an older computer
- Check the machine. Note its operating system, RAM and graphics adapter. Open OBS and check which encoders are actually available. Confirming the exact GPU or processor model is useful when comparing it with OBS’s encoder compatibility notes.
- Install OBS from the official download page. Use the current build for your operating system. The OBS Windows download listing showed version 32.2.2, released August 14, 2026; check the OBS download page for the latest version rather than treating that listing as permanent.
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. In OBS, open Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard and follow the prompts for streaming, hardware and network. OBS describes the wizard in its Quick Start Guide. Treat its suggested setup as a baseline to test, not a guarantee for every game or scene.
- Build a lean scene. Add only the source you need—such as game capture, camera or display capture—plus required audio and essential overlays. Avoid unnecessary browser sources, filters and animated media while diagnosing performance.
- Test the full workload. Stream or record a representative session with the real game or camera, overlays and audio. A PC may run OBS but fail to render or encode the combination smoothly. Watch OBS’s status information for rendering or encoding overload and inspect the platform’s stream health.
Reduce lag, overload and dropped frames
First distinguish the symptom. OBS rendering or encoding overload points toward PC workload; network-related dropped frames point toward the connection or stream delivery. Change one setting at a time and repeat the same test so you can tell what helped.

- Lower output resolution. If the machine cannot keep up, reduce the stream’s output resolution in Settings > Video. This lowers the amount of video work compared with a higher-resolution output.
- Reduce frame rate. In Settings > Video, try 30 fps rather than 60 fps. OBS notes that dropping from 60 to 30 fps reduces the work required.
- Reduce game load. Cap the game’s frame rate or lower its graphics settings so it leaves more resources for OBS. Close other applications using substantial GPU resources.
- Simplify the scene. Disable nonessential filters, browser sources, animated overlays and media sources, then add them back individually if the stream remains stable.
- On Windows, try administrator mode for GPU overload. OBS says running it as administrator may resolve some GPU overload issues; it is one troubleshooting step, not a substitute for reducing an excessive workload.
- Revisit the wizard and connection. If network performance is the issue, check upload stability and platform-specific settings instead of assuming a lower CPU load will fix it.

OBS, Streamlabs Desktop and similar apps need a computer to capture and encode content in real time. If your aim is a camera, gameplay or live screen share, test the actual workflow and reduce the workload before deciding whether the PC needs an upgrade. A webcam or capture device is not a general fix for rendering or encoding overload.
