There is no single best streaming service for everyone: on-demand subscriptions and live-TV plans solve different problems, and the right choice depends on what you watch, whether you need live channels, and how much advertising you’ll accept. This U.S. guide covers major services and price references available as of October 11, 2026; it is not a complete directory of every niche, regional, or free service.
Which streaming service should you choose?
Start with the kind of viewing you need. A library subscription is for watching shows, films, and originals on demand; a live-TV plan is a channel package and a closer substitute for cable. Don’t compare their monthly prices as if they provide the same thing.

- For Apple Originals and the sports programming listed by Apple: consider Apple TV. Apple’s official U.S. product page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists a seven-day trial followed by $14.99 per month.
- For live channels: compare YouTube TV with other live-TV packages, including Hulu + Live TV and Sling TV. YouTube TV’s main plan lists more than 100 channels; see its price and account details below.
- For a mix of on-demand services: compare standalone plans from services such as Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, Paramount+, Peacock, and Prime Video, then check whether a bundle fits your actual viewing.
- For a lower entry price: compare the same kind of plan and ad level, not just the cheapest number in a list. A low-cost, ad-supported plan is not equivalent to an ad-free or live-TV package.
These are starting points, not a universal ranking. The reviewed 2026 service comparison evaluates content, live-TV options, features, and usability; individual preferences determine which matters most.

Current official tier-by-tier rates were not established here for Netflix, HBO Max, Prime Video, Paramount+, or Peacock. Hulu’s plan categories are established, but its exact tier prices are not listed in this comparison. No price is supplied for Sling TV. Treat those prices as not stated rather than assuming the snapshot rates are current or that every provider has only one plan.

On-demand subscriptions and live TV are different choices
On-demand services
Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, Prime Video, Paramount+, Peacock, and Apple TV are among the major on-demand options in the reviewed 2026 comparison. Compare the shows, films, originals, and library content you personally want, then check the relevant tier for ads, streams, downloads, and video quality. Those limits vary by service and plan; the available price references do not verify them consistently enough for a reliable service-by-service feature table.
Apple’s product page specifically describes Apple Originals and sports programming. Apple also states that its subscription does not include third-party subscriptions or rental and purchase content offered in the Apple TV app.

Live-TV streaming
YouTube TV is a channel-based live-TV service. Its official plan page lists more than 100 channels, local channels, and sports and news package options, at $82.99 per month for one membership with up to six household accounts as of October 8, 2026. Hulu also offers live-TV plans alongside standalone on-demand plans. Sling TV is another live-TV alternative included in the reviewed comparison, but a current price is not established here.
Before choosing a live-TV package, check the channels and events you actually watch, especially local stations and sports. A channel count alone does not establish that a specific team, event, or local broadcast is included in your area.

When does a bundle make sense?
A bundle can simplify billing or lower the combined price, but a savings claim only holds when you compare equivalent standalone tiers over the same billing period. Disney’s listed bundle options combine Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN; Hulu identifies bundle categories that include Disney+, Hulu, ESPN, and HBO Max; and Peacock’s bundle page pairs Peacock with Apple TV.
- Write down the standalone tiers you would otherwise buy, including ad level.
- Compare their combined cost for the same billing period with the bundle price.
- Check that the bundle includes the versions and services you want, and note any billing-partner terms or eligibility conditions.
- Recheck the checkout amount before subscribing. Disney says third-party billing may differ, and its September 23, 2026 prices apply to new subscriptions from that date; existing subscribers may receive changes later.
A bundle is not automatically cheaper if it replaces a lower-priced tier with a more expensive one, includes a service you will not use, or is billed through a channel with a different price.

How to choose without overpaying
- List your must-watch content and channels. Prioritize specific shows, films, originals, local channels, or sports rather than subscribing based only on a provider’s overall reputation.
- Decide whether you need live TV. If you mainly watch on demand, compare catalog subscriptions. If you need a channel lineup, compare live-TV plans separately.
- Choose an ad level deliberately. Check what each tier changes before using price alone to pick a plan. A service’s lower-priced tier may include ads; limits on quality, downloads, or streams should be verified on that provider’s current plan page.
- Compare the full billing period. Include annual billing if offered, bundle terms, promotional expiry, and any ad-free upgrade. Do not treat a limited-time introductory price as a recurring rate.
- Confirm device support. A separate streaming device is optional if your existing smart TV, phone, computer, or other device supports the service. Hulu’s Help Center says Hulu requires a U.S. location, a valid payment method, a supported device, and an internet connection of at least 3 Mbps.
- Review the total monthly spend. The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation cited consumer reports for an average U.S. streaming spend of $69 per month in 2025. That is historical context, not a 2026 average or a committee survey; use your own list of subscriptions to judge your budget.
