No Computer Audio? Check the App, Output, and Device

No sound does not necessarily mean broken speakers. Check app controls and the selected output first, then troubleshoot Windows drivers or Mac audio routing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your computer has no sound, first check whether the problem is limited to one app and whether audio is going to the output you expect. A muted browser tab, a selected monitor, or an unrecognized Windows audio device can all leave you without sound—and none means the speakers are necessarily broken.

Start by narrowing down where the sound stops

Play audio in a second app or open a different audio item. Check the app or browser’s own volume and mute controls; these can be separate from the computer’s system volume. Web pages and media players may have their own controls, too. If only one app is silent, check its output and volume before changing system settings or drivers.

If everything is silent, check the computer’s output selection next. Sound may be routed to headphones, a monitor, a Bluetooth device, or another connected output instead of the built-in speakers.

Check volume and the selected output

Windows 10 and Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Output, select the speakers or headphones you are actually using.
  3. Check that the volume is not muted and raise the volume slider.
  4. If several playback devices are listed, make the intended device the default output.

Microsoft identifies the wrong output, mute, interfering audio enhancements, and a malfunctioning driver as possible causes of no sound. Its guidance covers Windows 10 and 11; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting steps may use slightly different labels depending on your version.

  • HIGH-QUALITY SOUND -- This laptop speaker is equipped with Dual 3W High-Excursion Drivers & Passive Radiator, delivering louder sound, wider dynamic range, enhanced bass and reduced distortion.
  • ONE CABLE FOR BOTH AUDIO & POWER -- No 3.5mm AUX jack needed. Just one USB cable delivers both audio signal and power for the computer speaker to cut down cable clutter.
  • WIDE SYSTEM COMPATIBILITY -- This upgraded PC speaker works with Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS laptops & PCs, compatible with HP, Lenovo, ThinkPad, ASUS, Dell, Samsung, Acer, LG and more. Simply install the latest audio driver for smooth audio playback.
  • PLUG-N-PLAY FOR SIMPLE SETUP -- For Windows PCs: Plug the speaker into your computer’s USB port, click the taskbar “Speaker” icon, then select “USB Speakers” as your playback device, and you’re ready.

Mac

  1. Open System Settings > Sound > Output. On older macOS versions, open System Preferences > Sound > Output.
  2. Select Built-in Speakers if you want sound from the Mac itself.
  3. Raise Output volume and make sure Mute is off.
  4. Disconnect headphones, external speakers, USB audio devices, and external displays while checking the built-in speakers.

Audio may be routed to a connected device instead of the Mac’s internal speakers. Apple’s steps for checking sound output on a Mac cover built-in and external audio routes.

Check the speakers, headphones, and display

For external speakers, confirm they are powered, switched on, and turned up. Check that the cable is connected to the correct audio output. If you are using audio through a display or receiver, verify its connection and select the intended output in the computer’s sound settings. Mac output options can include analog, USB, display, and digital receiver audio.

Computer Speakers for Desktop PC Monitor, USB Plug-in, Wired, Computer Soundbar for PC, Laptop Speakers with Adaptive-Channel-Switching, Loud Sound, Deep Bass, USB C Adapter, Easy to Clip on Monitor
  • [COMPATIBLE WITH USB DEVICES] - Our USB Speakers are compatible with Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux, making them ideal for PC, laptop, and desktop computer. Incompatible Devices: Monitors TVs and Projector.
  • [COMPATIBLE WITH USB-C DEVICES] - Thanks to the built-in USB-C to USB Adapter, our USB-C speakers are now compatible with devices that only have USB-C interface, such as the latest MacBook, Mac mini, iMac, iPad, Android phones, and tablets.
  • [INCREDIBLE LOUD SOUND WITH RICH BASS] - Our small computer speaker is equipped with dual ultra-magnetic drivers and dual passive radiators, providing high-quality stereo sound with powerful volume and deep bass for an incredible audio experience.
  • [ADAPTIVE-CHANNEL-SWITCHING WITH G-SENSOR] - Ensures the left and right sound channels remain correctly positioned whether the speaker is clamped to the top or bottom of your monitor.
  • [CONVENIENT TOUCH CONTROL] - Three intuitive touch buttons on the front allow for easy muting and volume adjustment.

If you already have compatible wired or USB headphones, you can use them as an optional way to compare another audio path. If they work, that shows one route can produce audio; it does not by itself prove the built-in speakers are physically damaged. Keep checking output selection and software settings before concluding that hardware has failed. Headphones are not required to resolve a mute or routing problem.

Windows: troubleshoot enhancements and audio drivers

If the output is listed but still silent

Turn off audio enhancements for the selected device and run the built-in audio troubleshooter. On Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the automated Audio troubleshooter in Get Help. Windows 10 guidance also includes the Get Help audio troubleshooter. Use the route and labels available in your version of Windows.

If Windows says no audio output device is installed

A blank output list, unavailable sound settings, or the message “No audio output device is installed” can mean Windows is not detecting the audio device. Microsoft lists a missing, outdated, disabled, or improperly loading driver among the possible causes.

  1. Open Device Manager and check whether the audio device appears and is enabled.
  2. If the driver is missing or incompatible, get the correct driver from your computer maker or sound-card manufacturer.
  3. Install the driver and restart the computer.

Avoid random driver-download sites. For a missing or undetected Windows audio output device, Microsoft recommends checking the device and using the manufacturer’s driver. If the output remains absent after those steps, contact the computer maker for help with your model.

Windows: Bluetooth connects but plays no sound

A Bluetooth device can show as connected without being the active audio output. Select it under Settings > System > Sound > Output first. If it is listed but will not connect or play audio, use these targeted checks rather than changing every advanced setting at once:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Remove the Bluetooth device from Windows and pair it again.
  • Check for Bluetooth driver updates from the computer manufacturer.
  • Confirm the device supports A2DP for higher-quality audio streaming.
  • If needed, try Microsoft’s other steps, such as cycling Bluetooth, checking the output format, installing Windows updates, or restarting.

See Microsoft’s Bluetooth-connected-but-no-sound guidance for the applicable steps for Windows 10 or 11.
