Which Indian stock screener should you use?
The right choice depends on how much of the scan you want to build yourself.

| Screener | Best use | What it does well | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tickertape | Fast discovery with prebuilt screens | Ready-made weekly volume-breakout and price-volume-breakout screens for NSE stocks | Less control than a fully custom technical scan; data timing and current plan limits should be checked in the interface |
| Chartink | Custom technical scanning | Combines volume, RSI, EMA, market-cap and other conditions; its directory lists more than 150,000 searchable or user-created scans | You must understand and maintain the rules you select; alert access can depend on the current plan |
| Screener.in | Confirmation after technical discovery | Published queries combine volume averages with price, RSI, promoter-holding and market-cap filters | It is less focused on turnkey intraday-style breakout discovery than a dedicated technical scanner |
A practical sequence is to discover candidates with Tickertape or Chartink, remove illiquid names, then use Screener.in to check ownership and business-quality conditions. Treat the result as a research list, not a buy signal.

A breakout occurs when price moves above a defined resistance level, such as a recent swing high, consolidation ceiling or 52-week high. The move is more credible when trading volume expands at the same time because more participants are transacting as price clears that level. Tickertape describes a breakout stock as one that moves above key resistance alongside a significant surge in trading volume, while also warning that a breakout alone does not confirm a trading signal.

Price must clear a level that was visible beforehand
Calling any rising candle a breakout creates noisy results. Define the resistance first: a prior closing high, the upper boundary of a range, or a published 52-week-high distance condition. A stock that is already far above resistance may have less favorable entry risk than one making a controlled close just beyond the level.
Relative volume needs a stated baseline
Relative volume is current volume divided by an average over a specified lookback. The baseline changes the meaning of the result:
- Daily baseline: compares today with recent daily sessions and is useful for short-term scans.
- Weekly baseline: smooths individual sessions and can reduce one-day noise.
- Monthly baseline: compares the current activity with a longer recent history.
- Annual baseline: helps identify unusually active periods relative to a full-year context.
Always record both the multiplier and the lookback. “High volume” without that information is not reproducible. A reading of 3 means current volume is three times the selected average; it does not mean three times every prior session.
Volume confirms participation, not profitability
High volume can accompany genuine institutional demand, forced exits, news-driven speculation or a distribution event. A scanner cannot determine which explanation is correct. Review the chart, the event calendar and the spread before acting.
Tickertape: fastest route to a ready-made breakout list
Choose Tickertape when you want a usable shortlist without writing scan logic. Its current Weekly Volume Breakout Screener is designed around momentum, expanding activity and proximity to the yearly high.
Published weekly screen conditions
The page accessed on 19 October 2026 displays these conditions:
- One-week return above 5%.
- A volume condition described as volume above 1.5 times the four-week average. The page field is displayed as a one-week change-in-volume condition above 1.5%; check the exact label and definition shown in your session before relying on the result.
- Price within 0–3% of the 52-week high.
The combination intentionally favors stocks that have already shown recent price strength and are close to a major reference high. It is a momentum discovery filter, not a complete trade plan.

How to use the weekly screen
- Open Tickertape’s Weekly Volume Breakout Screener.
- Review the displayed return, volume and 52-week-high conditions rather than assuming a field has the same definition as a similarly named indicator elsewhere.
- Sort or inspect candidates by liquidity and price structure. Remove names with very wide spreads, extremely low traded value or a single isolated volume spike.
- Open each chart and mark the resistance level that the screen is approximating. Confirm whether the latest close actually cleared it.
- Record the date and time of the result. A weekly screen can change materially after a new session or a revised data update.
Use the separate price-volume breakout screen for resistance breaks
Tickertape also publishes a Price Volume Breakout screen for NSE stocks. It is intended to combine a resistance break with expanding volume, so it is a better fit when your central question is whether price and participation are moving together rather than whether a stock simply returned more than 5% in a week.
Because the screen is prebuilt, you gain speed but give up some control over the exact resistance definition, lookback period and liquidity thresholds. If those choices are critical to your method, move the candidates to a custom scanner.
Chartink: strongest choice for custom technical scans
Chartink is the better fit when you want to specify the complete technical recipe. Its published breakout screen includes daily volume, RSI, EMA-cross and market-cap conditions. The site states that its price data comes from an NSE feed with near-real-time updates unless a page says otherwise, and its directory says users can search more than 150,000 scans or create their own.
Start with the published breakout screen
- Open the Chartink breakout screen and inspect every condition in the scan definition.
- Check whether the volume rule uses an absolute quantity, a moving average comparison or a change percentage. Do not treat these as interchangeable.
- Review the RSI and EMA rules to understand whether the scan seeks momentum, a crossover or a trend confirmation.
- Check the market-cap condition and add a liquidity rule if the screen does not already impose one.
- Save a copy before changing conditions so you can compare your modified version with the original.
Build a custom volume-breakout scan
A robust custom scan normally has four layers:
- Universe: restrict the exchange and market-cap range you can realistically trade.
- Price event: require a close above a defined resistance, recent high or 52-week reference.
- Participation: compare current daily volume with a stated moving average or prior-period baseline.
- Confirmation: add RSI, EMA alignment or another trend condition only if it is part of your written method.
Do not add every available indicator. Two scans with overlapping momentum rules can make the list look more selective without adding independent information.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Alerts and data timing
Chartink’s volume-wise breakout page references live alerts. Whether a particular alert frequency or delivery method is available can change with the current plan, so verify access in your account before designing an intraday workflow around it. Near-real-time NSE-feed pricing is useful for monitoring, but a feed update is not the same as a confirmed closing breakout. Decide whether your rule triggers intrabar or only after the candle closes.
Screener.in: confirmation with fundamentals and ownership
Screener.in is most useful after a technical shortlist exists. Its published screens show how to combine volume history with price location, RSI, promoter holding and market capitalization.
Simple volume-multiple query
One published example uses the condition Volume > Volume 1month average × 3. This means the current volume must exceed three times the one-month average used by that query. The multiplier is meaningful only together with the stated one-month baseline; replacing it with a daily or weekly average changes the signal.

Layered price-volume and quality checks
Another published query combines:
- One-week, one-month and one-year volume averages.
- Distance from the high price.
- RSI.
- Promoter holding.
- Market capitalization.
This layered approach is valuable because a technical breakout can occur in a company with weak ownership stability, inadequate size or a poor liquidity profile. The query does not prove that any resulting stock will outperform; it simply makes the review criteria explicit.

How to use the results
- Run the volume condition to produce a candidate set.
- Check the price-location and RSI fields to see whether activity coincides with a meaningful move.
- Review promoter holding and market capitalization against your own eligibility rules.
- Open the company page and read recent results, share-count changes and disclosures before treating the candidate as actionable.
- Return to the price chart to verify that the apparent breakout is not a single-session spike or a gap that has already failed.
Side-by-side comparison for Indian breakout research
| Decision factor | Tickertape | Chartink | Screener.in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ready-made logic | Strong; weekly and price-volume screens are available | Available, with many published scans | Published queries exist, but users often adapt them |
| Custom technical rules | More limited than a dedicated scan builder | Core strength; combine volume, RSI, EMA and market-cap rules | Useful for query-based filtering, especially when fundamental fields matter |
| Relative-volume flexibility | Uses the lookbacks and definitions built into each screen | Depends on the conditions you create | Published examples include one-month and multi-period averages |
| Price-breakout context | Explicit 52-week-high and price-volume screens | Can be defined through custom technical conditions | Can be paired with distance-from-high fields |
| Technical indicators | Preselected by the screen | Daily volume, RSI and EMA-cross conditions appear in the published breakout screen | RSI appears in the published layered example |
| Fundamental and ownership checks | Not the main purpose of the cited breakout screens | Market-cap filtering is present; broader fundamental checks depend on the scan | Promoter holding, market capitalization and other company fields support confirmation |
| Freshness | Check the timestamp and screen behavior in your session | Near-real-time NSE-feed pricing unless indicated otherwise | Check the page timestamp and update schedule before making an intraday decision |
| Alerts | Not established for the cited screens | Volume-breakout pages reference live alerts; verify current access | Not established for the cited examples |
| Pricing and free-tier limits | Not verified for this comparison | Not verified; alert access may depend on plan | Not verified |
A repeatable workflow from scan to decision
Step 1: Define the trading horizon
Choose whether you are reviewing end-of-day swing candidates or monitoring an intraday move. A one-week return rule and a monthly volume baseline are not automatically suitable for a five-minute strategy. Write down the holding period, candle interval and whether confirmation is required at the close.
Step 2: Choose the scan engine
- Use Tickertape when speed and a prebuilt Indian breakout list matter most.
- Use Chartink when your edge depends on exact technical conditions or alerts.
- Use Screener.in when a technical list must be filtered by ownership, size and company fields.
Step 3: Make the volume rule reproducible
Record the numerator, denominator and lookback. For example, write “current daily volume divided by the one-month average is greater than 3,” rather than “volume is high.” If the platform uses a weekly change percentage instead of a ratio, record that wording exactly.
Step 4: Require a price condition
Pair the volume rule with a resistance definition. A stock can trade heavily below resistance and still fail to break out. Use a close above the level if your method is designed to avoid intraday false breaks.
Step 5: Apply liquidity controls
Screen for a minimum market capitalization or traded-value threshold that fits your account. Inspect the bid-ask spread, average turnover and recent gaps. A technically perfect signal can be unusable if entering or exiting moves the price materially.
Step 6: Check ownership and business context
Use Screener.in’s promoter-holding, market-capitalization and company-level fields after the technical pass. Investigate corporate actions, earnings dates and material disclosures that could explain the volume.
Step 7: Confirm the candle and plan the risk
Decide in advance where the setup is invalidated: below the breakout level, below the consolidation range or at another objective point. Define position size from the rupee amount you are willing to lose, not from the number of shares that looks convenient.

Step 8: Log the result
Save the scan name, conditions, timestamp, entry rationale and outcome. A log lets you test whether your particular combination of resistance, relative volume and confirmation is useful instead of assuming that a visually convincing list has an edge.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to reduce false breakouts
Wait for a closing confirmation when appropriate
Intraday price can cross resistance and reverse before the session ends. If your strategy is not specifically designed for intraday triggers, require a close above the level and inspect the next session for follow-through.
Reject isolated spikes
A single exceptional volume bar may reflect news, a block transaction or forced liquidation. Compare the bar with several prior sessions and read the accompanying disclosure before treating it as sustained accumulation.
Check the spread and turnover
Volume alone does not guarantee execution quality. A low-priced or thinly traded stock can show a large percentage increase from a small base. Use minimum liquidity rules and estimate slippage for both entry and exit.
Separate gap risk from continuation risk
A stock that opens far above resistance has already consumed part of the move. Decide whether your rules permit buying a gap, waiting for a retest or excluding the candidate until a new base forms.
Account for market regime
Breakout behavior changes in broad risk-off markets, after index volatility spikes and around major event dates. A scanner will continue to produce matches even when follow-through is poor. Reduce exposure or tighten eligibility rules when your broader market conditions require it.
Intraday versus end-of-day use
Chartink is the only one of the three cited tools whose pages explicitly state near-real-time NSE-feed pricing unless indicated otherwise, and its volume-breakout page references live alerts. That makes it the natural candidate for monitoring during the session, subject to the plan and alert features currently available.
Best Value
For Tickertape and Screener.in, do not assume that a displayed result is an intraday trigger. Check the page’s update timestamp and whether the value is based on completed sessions. If you cannot establish the timing, use the result for end-of-day research rather than placing an order from an apparently live number.
What the published numbers do—and do not—tell you
The Tickertape weekly screen’s 5% one-week-return threshold, its displayed volume condition and 0–3% distance from the 52-week high are selection rules. Screener.in’s three-times-one-month-average example is another selection rule. None of these figures is a forecast, a probability of success or a recommended risk limit.
The cited screener pages do not publish an independently verified win rate, average return, drawdown or comparison against a benchmark. You therefore cannot claim that one platform produces better returns from these pages alone. To evaluate a method, preserve historical scan outputs or run a properly designed backtest that includes survivorship, delisted shares, transaction costs, slippage and realistic execution timing.

Costs, access and plan checks
Current pricing and free-tier limits were not established for this comparison. Do not assume that a feature visible on a public scan page is included in every account. Before committing to a workflow, verify whether saving scans, exporting results, intraday refreshes and alerts are available at the access level you intend to use.
For alert-driven trading, also confirm delivery latency, alert frequency, duplicate-alert behavior and whether the trigger is evaluated intrabar or at the close. These operational details can matter more than the headline number of indicators.
Practical scan recipes
Fast weekly momentum shortlist
Start with Tickertape’s Weekly Volume Breakout Screener. Keep the published one-week return, volume and 52-week-high conditions intact, then manually remove candidates with weak liquidity or an unexplained one-day spike. Use this recipe when you want a short list quickly and are prepared to perform the confirmation yourself.
Custom technical breakout
In Chartink, combine a close above your chosen resistance with a relative-volume rule, then add one trend confirmation such as RSI or EMA alignment. Add market-cap and liquidity constraints before saving the scan. This recipe is appropriate when your rules differ from the prebuilt screens.

Technical plus ownership confirmation
Run a technical list first, then use Screener.in to apply the published style of checks: one-week, one-month and one-year volume context, distance from the high, RSI, promoter holding and market capitalization. This is the most complete of the three workflows, but it also requires the most manual review.
Quick Recap
Decision guide
- Choose Tickertape if you need a ready-made Indian list and want to spend your time validating charts rather than constructing filters.
- Choose Chartink if you need custom relative-volume definitions, technical combinations or alert-based monitoring.
- Choose Screener.in if the technical signal is only the first gate and you need promoter-holding, market-capitalization and company-level checks.
- Combine them when discovery speed, technical control and fundamental confirmation are all important.
Final checklist before acting on a candidate
- Is the resistance level explicit and did price clear it?
- Is the relative-volume baseline and multiplier written down?
- Was the volume expansion broad enough to be more than one isolated bar?
- Is the stock liquid enough for your order size and exit plan?
- Do the RSI, EMA or other confirmation rules agree with your method?
- Have you checked promoter holding, market capitalization and relevant disclosures?
- Do you know whether the data is near-real-time or end-of-day?
- Is the alert or saved-scan feature actually available on your current plan?
- Where is the setup invalidated, and how much capital will be lost there?
- Have you recorded the scan timestamp so the decision can be audited later?
