MangoHud is the closest Linux replacement for Steam’s in-game performance monitor. It provides an in-game Vulkan and OpenGL HUD for FPS, frame time, CPU and GPU load, temperatures, RAM, VRAM and other telemetry. In Steam, add mangohud %command% to a game’s launch options. If you want a graphical editor instead of manually managing configuration files, use GOverlay to create MangoHud profiles and Steam-ready launch commands.
Steam’s own performance monitor remains useful, but Valve documents platform-dependent metric support: the complete metric set was initially available on Windows, while some measurements are unavailable on other operating systems. MangoHud is therefore the practical choice when you need explicit Vulkan/OpenGL coverage in Linux and Proton games.

Which Linux overlay should you use?
The right choice depends on whether you need an overlay engine, a configuration interface, or only a small driver diagnostic display.

For a normal Steam library, start with MangoHud. Add GOverlay when you maintain several game-specific profiles or prefer checkboxes and text fields to editing MangoHud.conf. Treat Mesa’s overlay and vendor utilities as targeted complements rather than universal replacements.

What Steam’s performance monitor does on Linux
Steam’s in-game performance monitor is designed to show how a game is running and what load it places on the computer. Depending on platform support, it can render FPS, CPU, GPU and system-RAM information. Valve notes that the full set of measurements was first available on Windows and that some metrics are not supported on other operating systems.
That qualification matters on Linux. A counter appearing in Steam’s menu does not guarantee that every temperature, memory or utilization field will be populated for every driver and game. Proton adds another compatibility layer, and the game may use either Vulkan or OpenGL. If a particular metric is missing, an overlay with its own Linux-native instrumentation is usually easier to diagnose than a platform-dependent Steam field.
MangoHud does not replace Steam’s store, friends, screenshots or other client functions. It replaces the performance HUD: the part of the overlay that draws telemetry over the game image.
Why MangoHud is the default recommendation
The MangoHud project describes itself as “A Vulkan and OpenGL overlay for monitoring FPS, temperatures, CPU/GPU load and more.” That combination is the reason it fits a mixed Linux library. Native Vulkan games, OpenGL titles and many Windows games launched through Proton can use the same general Steam launch-option pattern.
Metrics and presentation
MangoHud can expose FPS and frame-time information alongside CPU and GPU utilization, temperatures, RAM and VRAM usage. Frame time is particularly useful when the displayed FPS looks acceptable but motion still feels uneven: it shows how long each frame takes and helps reveal spikes that an average FPS number can hide. Utilization and temperature readings help distinguish a graphics bottleneck from a processor bottleneck or thermal throttling.
The exact fields visible depend on the hardware, driver and configuration. A sensor that the operating system or driver does not expose cannot be made accurate by the overlay. Start with a small set of fields, then add information only when troubleshooting; a crowded HUD can obscure the game and make trends harder to read.
Logging and configuration
MangoHud supports configurable metrics and logging. Configuration is useful when one game needs a compact FPS display while another requires temperatures, memory usage or more detailed frame-time information. Logging lets you inspect behavior after a session instead of relying solely on what you noticed while playing.

Configuration can be maintained directly in MangoHud’s configuration file, commonly referred to as MangoHud.conf. If that file is inconvenient to edit, GOverlay provides a graphical route and can create per-game configuration files.
Install MangoHud on your distribution
Use the package source appropriate to the way you run games. The upstream project documents package routes for Debian and Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE, Arch-based distributions and Flatpak. Package names and commands differ by distribution, so use your distribution’s current package manager instructions rather than copying a command intended for another family.
Check architecture before testing
Many modern Linux installations are 64-bit, but a game can still contain 32-bit components. On distributions that split MangoHud by architecture, a 32-bit game needs the matching 32-bit MangoHud package in addition to the normal package. If a 64-bit title displays the HUD but an older 32-bit title does not, missing 32-bit support is an early item to check.
Flatpak Steam requires the Flatpak route
If Steam itself is installed as a Flatpak, install and enable MangoHud through the documented Flatpak method and ensure the Steam sandbox has the required runtime access. A system package alone may not be visible inside the sandbox. Keep the packaging boundary consistent: a Flatpak game or client generally needs the Flatpak-compatible overlay and permissions, while a system installation uses the distribution package.
Enable MangoHud in a Steam game
The basic Steam procedure is short and reversible.
- Open Steam and switch to your Library.
- Right-click the game, choose Properties, and stay on the General page.
- Find the Launch Options field.
- Enter
mangohud %command%exactly, including the Steam placeholder. - Close the Properties window and start the game.
The %command% token tells Steam to append its normal game command after MangoHud. Do not replace the token with the game’s executable path when using this method. To disable the overlay later, remove the launch option and leave the field empty.
Confirm that the test worked
Use a game in which you can easily see the upper edge of the display, then look for MangoHud’s telemetry after loading into an actual 3D scene. A title menu may not exercise the same rendering path as gameplay. If no HUD appears, do not immediately assume the package is broken: identify the game’s graphics API, whether it is native or running through Proton, and whether Steam is sandboxed.
Run MangoHud outside Steam
The project also documents a standalone form: mangohud /path/to/app. Replace the example path with the application you want to launch. This is useful for testing the overlay independently of Steam, comparing a native application with a game, or checking whether a problem is specific to Steam’s launch environment.

Gamescope uses a different path documented by MangoHud: mangoapp. If a title is launched through gamescope, follow that integration rather than blindly nesting the ordinary Steam command. The goal is to ensure MangoHud is attached to the process that owns the rendered frames.

GOverlay is a Qt6 graphical frontend. It configures MangoHud and can also work with related Linux gaming layers, including vkBasalt, vkSumi, OptiScaler and Proton environment tweaks. Its per-game mode creates configuration files and a launch command ready to paste into Steam.
When GOverlay is worth installing
- You want to select metrics in a GUI instead of editing

- You use both Steam and Lutris and want commands generated for each launcher.
- You also manage other supported overlay or Proton settings from one interface.
A practical GOverlay workflow
- Install GOverlay using the package route appropriate to your distribution.
- Open it and select MangoHud as the overlay you want to configure.
- Choose the metrics and presentation options appropriate for the game you are tuning.
- Use the per-game function to create a profile and configuration file.
- Copy the generated Steam-ready launch command into that game’s Steam Launch Options field.
- Launch the game and adjust the profile if the HUD is too crowded or a sensor is unavailable.
Because GOverlay edits the configuration that MangoHud consumes, a GOverlay profile does not bypass the underlying compatibility requirements. A missing 32-bit package, an unsupported sensor or an incorrect Flatpak boundary still needs to be fixed at the package or runtime level.
Account for Vulkan, OpenGL and Proton
API identification is the fastest way to narrow down a failed overlay. MangoHud supports Vulkan and OpenGL, but the way a game reaches those APIs differs among native Linux releases, Windows games through Proton and games launched through a compositor such as gamescope.
Native Vulkan games
Start with the standard mangohud %command% option. If the overlay fails, verify that MangoHud is installed for the same environment as the game and check whether the graphics driver exposes the expected sensors.

Native OpenGL games
The same launch option is the first test because MangoHud supports OpenGL as well as Vulkan. Very old or unusual launchers may spawn a child process that does the actual rendering; in that situation, test the standalone command or the game’s documented launcher behavior.
Windows games running through Proton
Proton introduces both a translation layer and possible 32-bit components. Check the 32-bit MangoHud package when required by your distribution, then verify that Steam’s launch option is attached to the game entry that actually starts Proton. If the game is wrapped in another launcher, the visible Steam entry may not be the process rendering the final frames.

Gamescope sessions
For gamescope, use MangoHud’s documented mangoapp integration. Mixing several wrappers can make it unclear which process owns the overlay, so test one layer at a time before adding additional launch options.

Calling MangoHud “better” is therefore context-dependent. It is better when your priority is Linux-focused, cross-API telemetry and configurable profiles. Steam’s monitor remains convenient when its available fields already answer your question and you do not need a separate overlay configuration.
Read the HUD to find a bottleneck
Use the overlay as evidence, not as a single magic number.
- Low GPU utilization with high CPU utilization: the processor or a game thread may be limiting frame production.
- High GPU utilization: reducing resolution, quality settings or an expensive graphics effect may change the frame rate more than changing CPU-related settings.
- High temperatures with declining performance: investigate cooling and possible thermal throttling before interpreting the result as a game-engine limit.
- Stable average FPS but visible stutter: inspect frame-time behavior and logs rather than relying only on the headline FPS value.
- High VRAM or RAM use: check whether texture quality, background applications or the game’s own memory behavior is responsible.
These are diagnostic patterns, not guarantees. A game can be limited by a single thread while overall CPU utilization appears moderate, and a driver can report a sensor differently from another driver. Compare one change at a time and keep the same scene when evaluating a setting.
Troubleshooting checklist
No overlay appears at all
- Confirm that the Steam launch option is exactly
mangohud %command%. - Run a native test with
mangohud /path/to/appto separate Steam issues from MangoHud issues. - Identify whether the game uses Vulkan or OpenGL.
- Check that MangoHud is installed in the same package environment as Steam and the game.
- If Steam is Flatpak, apply the documented Flatpak installation and runtime override rather than relying only on a host package.
Only some games work
Compare the working and failing titles by API, native-versus-Proton status and architecture. A 32-bit Proton title may need a separate 32-bit MangoHud package even when 64-bit games work normally.
The HUD appears but fields are blank
Blank temperatures, memory values or utilization fields usually point to hardware, driver or permission availability rather than a missing font or layout choice. Verify that the operating system exposes the sensor and that the selected metric is meaningful for that device. Use a smaller configuration while testing so you can tell which field is unavailable.

GOverlay changes do not affect the game
Check that the generated command was pasted into the correct game’s Steam Properties page and that no older launch option is overriding it. Confirm that GOverlay’s profile targets the same game executable and package environment you are launching.
Problems begin after adding several wrappers
Remove extra launch options and restore the single MangoHud test. Reintroduce gamescope, Proton environment tweaks or other overlays one at a time. This isolates whether the failure comes from MangoHud, the wrapper order or the game itself.
A repeatable setup plan
For a new Linux installation, the following sequence minimizes guesswork:
- Install MangoHud through the distribution or Flatpak route matching your Steam installation.
- Install the matching 32-bit package if your distribution requires one for 32-bit games.
- Test one known Vulkan or OpenGL Steam title with
mangohud %command%. - Record which metrics appear and whether the game is native or Proton-based.
- Use GOverlay only after the basic overlay works, then create per-game profiles for titles that need different telemetry.
- For gamescope sessions, switch to MangoHud’s documented
mangoapppath. - When troubleshooting, change one variable at a time: API, package architecture, Flatpak permissions, wrapper or configuration.
This order gives you a known-good baseline before adding customization. It also prevents a GUI profile, a sandbox permission and a Proton wrapper from all changing at once.
