Best Steam Machine Graphics Settings for Higher Frame Rates (and What to Know About eGPUs)

The best Steam Machine settings depend on the game, display, and resolution. Use the Performance Monitor to guide changes, and treat eGPU setups as experimental.

There is no universal best graphics preset for higher frame rates on Steam Machine: the right settings depend on the game, display, and resolution. Start by checking the game’s resolution and Steam’s Performance Monitor, then lower demanding options one at a time and compare results in the same scene. Treat an external GPU (eGPU) as an experimental hardware modification, not an officially supported upgrade.

Why the best settings depend on your game and display

Steam Support says picture-quality choices can vary substantially with Steam Machine settings, the display, and the individual game. A preset that works well on one setup may not suit another, so tune the game you are playing rather than relying on a single system-wide recipe. Steam Machine – Feature & Troubleshooting guide.

Resolution is a useful first check because it determines the image the game is rendering for your display. Record the current resolution and quality preset before changing anything. Steam describes Steam Machine as running SteamOS with a “discrete semi-custom AMD desktop class CPU and GPU” in its Steamworks documentation, but that hardware description does not determine how a particular game will perform at a particular resolution.

A repeatable way to tune for more FPS

  1. Record your starting point. Note the game’s resolution, graphics preset, upscaling mode, frame-generation setting, and observed frame rate. Menu labels differ between games, so record the actual options shown in yours.
  2. Enable Steam’s In-Game Overlay Performance Monitor. Use it while playing a repeatable scene to check whether the GPU is limiting frame rate. Steam also warns that performance may suffer when a game needs more video memory than is available. See Steam Support’s feature and troubleshooting guide.
  3. Lower one demanding graphics option. Change a single setting, then replay the same scene or workload and compare both frame rate and image quality. Changing one option at a time makes it easier to tell what helped.
  4. Check the game’s upscaling options. If it offers an upscaler, compare the available modes and inspect the resulting image. Support and choices vary by title; a reviewer found FSR availability inconsistent across tested games. PC Gamer’s Steam Machine review.
  5. Assess frame generation separately. A displayed rate that includes generated frames is not the same as the game’s base rendering rate. Consider responsiveness and image quality alongside the number.
  6. Recheck after updates. Steam documents separate menu locations for Steam Machine hardware updates and SteamOS software updates in its Feature & Troubleshooting guide. A game or system update can change the behavior you observed.

Read FPS claims with their settings attached

A PC Gamer Cyberpunk 2077 review reported a 58–61 FPS average at 4K with Medium settings, ray tracing off, FSR Performance, and 2x frame generation. The reviewer estimated the base frame rate at around 30 FPS and noted added latency and visual messiness. That result illustrates why an FPS figure without its configuration can mislead: it is one reviewer’s result for one game and setup, not a performance guarantee. PC Gamer’s review.

MINISFORUM DEG1 eGPU Dock, External GPU Docking Station for RTX 4090, AMD RX 7900 XTX, eGPU Enclosure Graphics Card Extension Support ATX/SFX Standard Power, Oculink Expansion Graphics Docking Station
  • 【Up Link & Down Link】Up link: Oculink 4i(PCIE4.0x4), Down Link: PCIEx16(PCIE4.0x4). Only Support Oculink.
  • 【Power Supply】This DEG1 supports ATX and SFX standard power supplies, which provides flexible power supply solutions for mini chassis.
  • 【Oculink Interfaces】Please kindly note the OCulink interface does not support hot plugging, and the machine needs to be turned off first.
  • 【Follow-start Function】The follow-start function is only compatible with MINISFORUM Mini PCs, it requires the use of original wires.
  • Note: The GPU is not included.

When comparing settings, keep the distinction clear: upscaling can trade image quality for performance, while frame generation affects the displayed rate without making the base rendering rate equivalent. The options available—and their results—depend on the individual game.

Does Steam Machine support an eGPU?

Official sources cited here do not establish a supported or broadly compatible Steam Machine eGPU upgrade. Tom’s Hardware reported one modification using a Radeon RX 9070 XT, an M.2-to-OCuLink adapter, and an external GPU dock; the report says the boot drive was moved to USB-C storage. That is evidence of a reported modification, not a plug-and-play recipe or proof that another unit and configuration will work. Tom’s Hardware report.

A ValveSoftware issue frames eGPU support as a hardware feature request, while Valve’s OEM documentation advises hardware makers to ensure Linux support and coordinate drivers. These sources do not confirm a general Steam Machine eGPU path or provide a verified adapter list. Anyone considering this advanced modification would need to verify hardware revision, firmware, driver, and boot configuration compatibility before buying components.
