Compare the full cost of getting paid—including provider charges, conversion, withdrawal, operations and customer support—and distinguish an on-chain confirmation from spendable fiat in a bank account. Credit cards remain easier for many customers to use and provide established dispute processes; stablecoin transfers generally do not.
How do the two payment methods work?
A card payment involves several parties and stages. The card issuer may authorize a purchase at checkout, but authorization is not the same as the merchant receiving the money. Funds pass through the acquiring or processing arrangements and card network before payout to the merchant.

In a stablecoin payment, the customer sends a digital token designed to track the value of a reference currency, such as the U.S. dollar, from a wallet to a business wallet or payment provider. The transaction is recorded on a blockchain. If the business needs ordinary bank money, it must also have a way to convert or redeem the token and withdraw the proceeds.

Stablecoins are not simply digital dollars held in an insured bank account. They are private liabilities whose value and redemption depend on the issuer, reserves, legal arrangements and access to a working redemption route.

What are the cost differences between stablecoin and traditional payments?
Card acceptance costs usually combine several charges rather than one fee. A merchant discount charged by a processor or acquirer can include interchange paid to the card issuer, network fees and processor or other charges. The mix varies by card type, transaction, merchant agreement and geography.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office reported that selected federal entities collected $43.604 billion in card payments across 743 million transactions in fiscal year 2023 and paid $784 million in fees—about $1.06 per transaction on average. The sample covered seven entities, including the Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Service, Amtrak, the Smithsonian Institution, USPS and three Department of Defense nonappropriated-fund entities; the Treasury bureau handled acceptance for an estimated 81 federal entities. This is evidence of costs in that particular federal sample, not a representative merchant rate or a forecast for a private business. For typical Visa or Mastercard purchases in that sample, interchange accounted for nearly 90% of the fees; that share should not be assumed for other merchants or card mixes.
Stablecoin payments may avoid card interchange and network fees for a particular flow, but other costs can replace them. Stripe’s provider-authored guide describes blockchain fees as typically ranging from pennies to a few dollars, with possible on- and off-ramp charges. Those figures are guidance, not a universal price schedule. Costs depend on the blockchain, payment size, provider, location, conversion rate and where the business needs the funds to arrive.

- Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.
- Card route: processor or acquirer charges, interchange, network and other fees, plus any costs associated with disputes, fraud screening and reconciliation.
- Stablecoin route: blockchain fees, payment-provider charges, exchange spread, on-ramp or off-ramp fees, custody, wallet controls, screening, reconciliation and compliance work.
- Customer conversion: note who pays any fee or spread if the customer must acquire a token or convert currency before paying.
- Exception handling: estimate staff time and support costs for failed, delayed, misdirected or disputed payments, based on your own operations rather than an assumed industry rate.
A useful break-even calculation is: compare the card’s percentage and fixed charges with the stablecoin route’s network and provider fees, conversion and withdrawal costs, and the expected operating cost of managing the route. Apply it to actual quotes and observed transaction patterns. There is no established universal savings figure that makes stablecoins cheaper for every merchant.
How do stablecoins compare to traditional payments on speed and settlement?
At a card checkout, an authorization can appear almost immediate to the customer, while merchant payout happens later. Stripe gives one to three business days as a typical interval for card and direct-deposit settlement. That is provider guidance, not a guarantee: payout timing can depend on the processor, merchant agreement, risk review, weekends and payout settings.
A stablecoin transfer may be confirmed on-chain in seconds or minutes, depending on the blockchain and the confirmation policy a business uses. That does not mean the business has immediate bank cash. If it needs fiat, conversion, provider processing and bank withdrawal can add steps and time; banking hours and local redemption access may matter.

What risks might businesses encounter with stablecoin payments compared to traditional payments?
Stablecoins change who bears particular risks; they do not remove payment risk. Federal Reserve Governor Christopher J. Waller said on February 12, 2025: “Stablecoins are forms of private money and, like any form of private money, are subject to run risk, and we have seen ‘depegs’ of some stablecoins in recent years.” A target peg does not eliminate issuer, reserve, liquidity, legal, technology or operational risks. Waller also noted: “Additionally, all payment systems face risk of failure, and stablecoins are subject to clearing, settlement, and other payment system risks as well.”
Finality, fraud and customer recourse
Once a stablecoin transfer has sufficient confirmations, it is generally not reversible through a card-style chargeback. This can reduce a merchant’s exposure to some chargebacks, but it also makes mistakes, stolen-wallet payments and transfers sent to the wrong address difficult or impossible to recover. Verify the recipient address, token and network before sending, and make the payment instructions clear to customers.
Cards have fraud and dispute costs of their own, but familiar issuer dispute processes and network fraud screening provide customer-facing protections that a wallet transfer does not inherently reproduce. The GAO notes that card-not-present purchases carry higher fraud and chargeback risks, and that disputed transactions can require refunds and fees. A business choosing stablecoins should decide how it will handle customer complaints and mistaken payments rather than treating irreversibility as an unqualified benefit.
Custody and operating controls
Accepting stablecoins adds responsibilities that a business should assign explicitly: who controls wallet keys, how access is protected and recovered, how a payment address is verified, which tokens and chains are supported, how transactions are screened and reconciled, and how tokens are redeemed. A lost key or mistaken transfer can have a different recovery path from a card processor payout problem. Provider recommendations on these practices are operational guidance, not legal advice.

How do stablecoin payments affect cross-border business payments?
A cross-border stablecoin transfer may reduce reliance on correspondent-bank intermediaries when both sender and recipient can access the relevant platform and can obtain and redeem the token at reasonable cost. In a stylized example, the Federal Reserve describes how direct transfer could remove an intermediation fee, speed delivery and improve tracking. That example assumes platform access and low fixed or variable costs to buy and transfer the stablecoin.
Businesses still need to account for foreign-exchange risk, conversion spreads, local liquidity, on- and off-ramp costs, banking access and the recipient’s ability to redeem. A transfer that is quick on-chain may still be inconvenient or costly if the recipient cannot turn the token into usable local currency. Compare the complete route from payer’s funds to recipient’s usable funds, not just the blockchain leg.
What should a business evaluate before accepting stablecoins?
Start with a specific payment use case rather than replacing card acceptance wholesale. Identify the customers and markets involved, the currency and token, the amount and frequency of payments, and whether the business wants to hold tokens or receive fiat. Then assess:
- Demand and checkout fit: whether enough customers have wallet access and want to pay this way, and whether the extra wallet and network choices add friction.
- End-to-end economics: whether actual provider quotes and conversion routes beat the complete card cost for the same transactions.
- Settlement destination: whether the business can use tokens directly or needs predictable fiat payout to a bank account.
- Controls and exceptions: how custody, address verification, screening, reconciliation, refunds and customer support will work.
- Jurisdiction and provider fit: whether the token, provider, customers and redemption route are permitted and supported in each relevant country.
Customer interest alone does not establish likely adoption. Federal Reserve Financial Services reported in 2024 that 25% of surveyed consumers said slow payments challenged them and preferred better instant money-movement options. Its summary says the survey is not independent academic research; it signals an interest in faster payments, not demand specifically for stablecoins.
What is the U.S. regulatory context?
In a note dated March 30, 2026, the Federal Reserve said Congress passed the GENIUS Act in July 2025 and described a U.S. framework for payment stablecoin issuers, including backing with relatively safe assets such as bank deposits and short-term U.S. Treasury securities, and no direct interest paid by an issuer. The note also said federal and state implementation would influence adoption. It does not establish the final status of every implementing rule. Requirements outside the United States, and rules applying to particular providers, tokens, customers and redemption routes, can differ; a U.S. issuer framework is not a global authorization.
