Start with the GeekWire Startup List for broad discovery, then verify each company in Crunchbase. The GeekWire list offers location and category filtering and covers the Pacific Northwest, so set the location to Seattle or Washington when you need local precision. Use the Washington Technology Industry Association (WTIA) for mentors, investors, service providers and other ecosystem relationships; its 2026 Washington Tech Universe Map adds founder-lineage and university-connection context. If your assignment is specifically about investors, use GeekWire’s Venture Capital Directory.
Which Seattle startup directory should you use?
No single directory answers every Seattle-company research question. The useful choice depends on whether you need a discoverable company list, structured funding data, ecosystem contacts, founder provenance or investor names.

GeekWire Startup List: the best first stop for discovery
The GeekWire Startup List is the strongest starting point when you want to find companies rather than answer a narrow financing question. It is presented as a comprehensive Pacific Northwest startup list and lets you filter by location and category. That combination is useful for building an initial universe of candidates, finding firms in a particular sector and seeing how a company is positioned in the regional technology scene.

How to make the geography precise
The list is broader than Seattle. Its stated coverage includes Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia. A search for “Seattle startups” can therefore return companies elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest unless you apply a Seattle or Washington filter. Decide in advance whether your unit of analysis is the city, the state or the wider region, and record that choice with your results.
When the GeekWire 200 matters
Companies can submit information that makes them eligible for the quarterly GeekWire 200. Eligibility is not the same as inclusion in every edition, and a ranking should not be treated as a complete census. For a list-building project, use the Startup List for breadth and treat the GeekWire 200 as editorial context or a way to identify especially visible regional companies.
What to capture from each result
- Company name exactly as displayed.
- Location field and whether it says Seattle, another Washington city or a different Pacific Northwest location.
- Category or categories used by the directory.
- The date you accessed the record.
- Any indication that the company has submitted information or appears in a GeekWire 200 edition.
Those fields make it possible to explain why a company qualified for your working list instead of silently mixing Seattle firms with regional results.

WTIA: use it when relationships matter more than rankings
The Washington Technology Industry Association is more useful for ecosystem research than for producing a ranked list. WTIA says its startup programs connect founders with venture capitalists, angel investors, mentors, advisors, legal and accounting partners, and enterprise customers. Its broader description places the organization among startups, industry, investors, academia and policy, with directory and curated-resource access.

Research questions WTIA can answer
- Which organizations help founders meet investors or mentors?
- Where can a researcher find Washington-focused advisors and professional-service partners?
- Which ecosystem resources connect startups with enterprise customers or academic institutions?
- What programs or relationships surround a company beyond its funding announcements?
WTIA is therefore a complement to a company database. A profile in a startup list may tell you that a firm exists and what category it occupies; WTIA resources can help explain the network in which that firm operates.
How to interpret WTIA’s ecosystem role
WTIA describes itself as sitting “at the center of Washington’s startup ecosystem.” That is an organizational description, not a claim that every Washington company or service provider appears in one complete directory. Treat its listings and programs as curated entry points, then confirm a contact’s current role and a program’s current availability before relying on them.
WTIA’s 2026 Washington Tech Universe Map: provenance, not a search engine
The 2026 Washington Tech Universe Map is designed to show relationships and lineage across Washington technology companies. The official release says the map includes 625 companies. Those companies were selected from roughly 3,500 companies with a Washington presence, using data sourced from PitchBook and filtering for current operation plus a meaningful Washington founder or university connection.
What the 625-company figure means
The 625 is the map’s selected population, not the number of all technology companies in Washington. The starting set of roughly 3,500 is also a source-defined group of companies with a Washington presence, not a government census. Because the selection emphasizes founder or university connections and current operation, a company can be absent without being inactive or unimportant.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

How to use the map in a Seattle project
- Begin with a company or founder already identified in the GeekWire Startup List or another source.
- Locate that company on the Washington map and note linked founders, parent companies, alumni companies or university connections shown there.
- Follow the visible lineage to generate additional names for verification.
- Confirm each newly discovered company’s current status and Seattle location in a searchable source.
- Record that the relationship came from the 2026 map, including the map’s selection criteria.
The map is a visual supplement, not a searchable replacement for GeekWire or Crunchbase. WTIA’s official map page also says posters are available for purchase, which may suit workshops or offices, but the physical poster does not replace a current, filterable company record.
Crunchbase’s Seattle information-technology hub: structured company and funding fields
Use Crunchbase when your research needs structured fields such as funding, acquisitions, investors and company details. The cited Seattle Information Technology Companies hub reported 1,217 Seattle organizations on a page accessed in 2026.
Why the 1,217 count needs qualification
That number is a database snapshot, not a complete count of Seattle startups. It reflects Crunchbase’s category and location definitions, inclusion rules and the page’s state when accessed. A company may be classified as information technology even when its public description uses a different industry label; another Seattle startup may be omitted because its profile is incomplete or categorized elsewhere.

How to verify a Crunchbase record
- Check the location field rather than assuming that a regional headquarters or mailing address means Seattle operations.
- Read the industry classification and retain the exact category used by the database.
- Separate announced funding from total funding fields, and note the date of the latest round.
- Check whether an acquisition is listed as completed, announced or absent from the record.
- Record your access date and the database view used, especially if you are comparing counts over time.
Crunchbase is particularly valuable after discovery: use it to enrich a candidate found in GeekWire, then cross-check material facts against the company’s own announcements or regulatory filings when accuracy is critical.

GeekWire’s Venture Capital Directory: for investor discovery
If the question is “Who funds Seattle and Pacific Northwest startups?” go directly to GeekWire’s Venture Capital Directory. GeekWire describes it as a regularly updated, searchable directory showing 66 firms.
The directory is investor-focused, so it should not be substituted for a startup list. Use it to create an investor shortlist, then examine each firm’s stated geography, stage, sector interests and portfolio evidence. “Pacific Northwest” is broader than Seattle; a firm in the directory may invest in the region without being based in Seattle or investing in every Seattle sector.
A practical investor-research record
- Firm name and directory listing date.
- Office location, if listed, separated from investment geography.
- Fund stage or sector information supplied by the directory.
- Portfolio companies that are relevant to your Seattle research question.
- The date on which you verified the firm’s current activity.

| Your question | Start here | Then add |

| Where can I find a list of Seattle startups? | GeekWire Startup List, filtered to Seattle or Washington | Crunchbase for structured company fields |
| How do I research Seattle technology companies? | GeekWire Startup List for discovery | Crunchbase for funding, acquisitions and investors; WTIA for ecosystem context |
| Is GeekWire or Crunchbase better? | GeekWire for editorially organized discovery and regional context | Crunchbase for database-style fields and broader organization records |
| Where can I find Seattle startup investors? | GeekWire Venture Capital Directory | WTIA programs and resources for mentors, angels and other connections |
| How do I trace founder connections? | WTIA 2026 Washington Tech Universe Map | Verify companies and current status in GeekWire or Crunchbase |
| Do I need ecosystem contacts? | WTIA | Use GeekWire and Crunchbase to identify the companies or investors to discuss |
A repeatable six-step workflow
- Define “Seattle.” Choose city limits, the wider Seattle area or Washington state. Do not combine those scopes in one count.
- Build the candidate list. Search the GeekWire Startup List by location and category. Export or copy the company names and the filters used.
- Enrich each company. Look up the same company in Crunchbase and capture funding, acquisition, investor and location fields with the access date.
- Add ecosystem context. Consult WTIA for programs, mentors, service providers, enterprise connections and other relationships relevant to your question.
- Trace lineage. Use the WTIA map to inspect founder and university connections, then verify every linked company in a searchable source.
- Research capital providers. If investors are part of the assignment, search the GeekWire Venture Capital Directory and document the regional scope of each firm.
This sequence keeps discovery, verification, relationship mapping and investor research separate. That separation prevents a visual map, an editorial list and a commercial database from being mistaken for interchangeable sources.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to verify freshness and avoid misleading conclusions
Record the access date
Directory pages change as companies launch, relocate, shut down, raise money or are acquired. Write the access date beside every count and record the edition or year when a resource is published annually, such as the 2026 WTIA map.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Keep geography attached to every result
A “Seattle” result can mean headquarters, an office, a founder’s residence or a database location tag. Preserve the source’s exact location field and state your own inclusion rule. A Pacific Northwest list should not be presented as Seattle-only.
Distinguish discovery from verification
Editorial lists and maps are excellent for finding names and relationships. Structured databases are useful for fields and filtering. Neither source alone proves that a company is operating today, has raised a particular amount or maintains a Seattle headquarters. Verify consequential claims with current company or transaction documentation.
Do not treat counts as market size
The 625 companies on the WTIA map, roughly 3,500-company starting set, 1,217 organizations on the Crunchbase hub and 66 firms in the GeekWire VC Directory each describe a particular source, filter and date. They cannot be added together or compared as if they measured the same population.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Using the regional list without a location filter: Apply Seattle or Washington filtering before counting.
- Calling the WTIA map a directory: Use it for visual connections, then verify names in a searchable source.
- Assuming a database total is exhaustive: Label the Crunchbase number as a snapshot and preserve its category definition.
- Confusing investor location with investment coverage: Check whether a VC firm is Seattle-based, Pacific Northwest-focused or simply listed as investing in the region.
- Leaving out inactive companies without documenting why: State the status rule and the date on which it was checked.
- Copying names without stable identifiers: Capture the company’s displayed name, category, location and source date so similarly named firms are not merged.
Bottom line for a Seattle startup research project
Use GeekWire’s Startup List to discover companies, Crunchbase to add structured funding and transaction fields, WTIA to understand relationships and support programs, the 2026 WTIA Tech Universe Map to trace founder and university lineage, and GeekWire’s Venture Capital Directory to identify investors. Keep each source’s geography, selection criteria and access date attached to your notes; that is what turns a convenient list into defensible Seattle-company research.
