The best compact alternative depends on what you mean by “better”: a bar-only setup, more convincing height effects, simpler TV connections, or bass from a bundled subwoofer. For a small TV area without another box on the floor, shortlist the Samsung HW-S60D and JBL Bar 300MK2; consider the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 if physical up-firing drivers matter. The Polk Signa S4 is a different trade-off because it includes a wireless subwoofer.
What to compare before replacing the Beam
Compact soundbars trade room-filling sound and bass against the space they occupy. Measure the space beneath the TV, including the TV stand’s clearance, and check the bar’s full dimensions before buying. The available comparisons identify the Samsung HW-S60D as 27 inches wide and the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 as under 28 inches wide; dimensions for the other candidates are not established here, so confirm them on the current product listing.

- Atmos hardware: A Dolby Atmos label does not mean every bar has drivers that fire upward. Some models virtualize height effects; others use up-firing drivers to reflect sound off the ceiling.
- Bass and footprint: An all-in-one bar avoids a separate subwoofer, while a bundled wireless subwoofer needs its own floor or shelf space.
- TV connections: Check the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC and optical outputs, as well as the bar’s supported inputs. Atmos support also depends on the TV and connection, not just the soundbar.
- Expansion and control: Compare whether you can add a subwoofer or rear speakers later, and whether the bar fits the streaming and voice-control features you want.
Best alternatives to consider
Samsung HW-S60D: a compact all-in-one with an expansion path
Samsung lists the HW-S60D as a 5.0-channel all-in-one soundbar with wireless Dolby Atmos and Q-Symphony. RTINGS describes it as a 27-inch-wide compact option with versatility and customization, and says it can be expanded with separately purchased satellites and a subwoofer. That makes it a practical pick if you want to start without extra boxes but may add them later. Samsung’s US product page displayed $399.99 when accessed on October 7, 2026; that is a time-sensitive listing, not a guaranteed current or regular price. 1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBose Smart Soundbar 600: consider it for physical height drivers
RTINGS calls the Bose Smart Soundbar its best small soundbar for Dolby Atmos and describes up-firing drivers that reflect height-channel sound off the ceiling. Its roundup places the bar under 28 inches wide. This is a useful distinction if you want physical height-driver hardware rather than relying only on virtual Atmos. RTINGS’ Beam comparison considers both models compact smart Atmos bars, but favors the Beam for stereo soundstage and DTS support; the Bose is not automatically an upgrade in every respect. The 600 was indexed as a 2022–2024 product, so confirm availability and make sure a listing is for the 600 rather than a newer product using the broader “Bose Smart Soundbar” name. JBL Bar 300MK2: a self-contained bar with virtual Atmos
What Hi-Fi describes the JBL Bar 300MK2 as a 5.0 design and says it has no up-firing speakers; like the Beam Gen 2, it renders Atmos virtually. The review praises the JBL’s room-filling, exciting presentation while preferring the Beam’s more controlled and precise sound. Choose it as a direct all-in-one alternative if that character appeals, but don’t expect physical height drivers. What Hi-Fi’s JBL Bar 300MK2 review
Polk Signa S4: an included subwoofer, at the cost of extra space
Polk identifies the Signa S4 as a 3.1.2 Dolby Atmos soundbar system with a wireless subwoofer, VoiceAdjust dialogue feature, and HDMI eARC/ARC, optical, and auxiliary connections. It suits buyers who want included bass hardware and broad listed input options, but it is less direct for an apartment setup where avoiding another unit is the priority. Marshall Heston 60 and Sony HT-S2000: check the footprint first
Tom’s Guide includes the Marshall Heston 60 among competitors to the Beam Gen 2 and Bose Smart Soundbar, and notes that it lacks voice-assistant support. Its Atmos and DTS:X positioning may make it worth checking, but current dimensions, price, and availability need confirmation before treating it as a compact recommendation. Tom’s Guide also lists the Sony HT-S2000 as a competing Dolby Atmos model, while describing it as notably less compact than the Heston 60. It is an edge-of-scope option if you can give up some space for a larger bar. Tom’s Guide soundbar comparison

Atmos depends on more than the logo
Atmos implementation varies by model. According to What Hi-Fi, the JBL Bar 300MK2 and Beam Gen 2 lack up-firing speakers and use virtual Atmos. RTINGS describes the Bose Smart Soundbar 600’s up-firing drivers as reproducing height-channel information. These approaches are not equivalent hardware, and the available comparisons do not establish that one will sound better in every room.

Connection matters, too. Sonos says the Beam Gen 2 needs a compatible TV and HDMI eARC or HDMI ARC for Atmos home-theater content. Check the TV manual and its audio-output settings before choosing a bar. Sonos also notes that an optical adapter can connect the Beam to an optical-only TV; the adapter does not enable Atmos.
