There is no single best SonicWall replacement for every small or midsize business. Fortinet’s FortiGate is the most directly documented option in this comparison for small businesses; WatchGuard Firebox, Sophos Firewall, Cisco Meraki MX, Check Point Quantum Spark, Barracuda CloudGen, Ubiquiti UniFi, Netgate pfSense, and Juniper SRX are additional families to investigate—not a verified ranking. Choose by the security features you need, the way your network is built, who will manage the firewall, and the full cost of operating it.

Which SonicWall alternatives belong on an SMB shortlist?

Fortinet explicitly presents FortiGate next-generation firewalls in its small-business security portfolio and describes related FortiGate Cloud management and networking products. That makes FortiGate a well-supported candidate to evaluate, but it does not establish that it is the right fit or the performance leader for your business.

How to choose the right replacement

Start with the work the firewall must do, not the number of employees alone. Fortinet’s buyer guidance highlights business size and expected growth, network topology, traffic processing, interfaces, inspection needs, remote access, and who will administer the system. Use those considerations to narrow the shortlist.

1. Size for real traffic and security inspection

Estimate normal and peak traffic, anticipated growth, and the inspection features you plan to enable. Ask vendors or resellers for performance figures that apply with those features switched on; a headline throughput number without its test conditions may not describe your intended configuration.

2. Map the network and access requirements

List the WAN connections, LAN interfaces, VPN or remote-user access, and network segmentation you need. Note whether the firewall serves one site or several and how it will fit into your existing network. These requirements can rule out an otherwise attractive appliance.

3. Match management to your team

Decide who will configure policies, apply updates, monitor alerts, and respond to incidents. A small IT team may need a manageable platform or an MSP to take on those duties. For multiple locations, ask how centralized administration works and what it costs.

4. Confirm lifecycle and support before picking a model

For each finalist, verify the exact model’s availability and lifecycle directly with the vendor, along with support options and the security services included in each subscription. A product-family name alone is not enough to establish that a particular model is current or suitable.

Compare the full cost, not only the appliance

Fortinet’s “Network Firewall Price: Comparing Security Costs” page gives general vendor estimates of $700–$1,000 for small-business firewall hardware and $1,500–$4,000 for hardware for businesses with 15 to 100 users. These are Fortinet’s estimates—not current quotes, verified market averages, or comparable prices across the alternatives—and the page does not establish a publication date for the figures.

Fortinet also identifies costs beyond purchase price, including deployment and configuration, management, vendor or authorized-partner support and services, integration, monitoring, and ongoing upkeep. Add the recurring security subscriptions required for your intended features, and compare candidates over the same period—such as three years—using equivalent assumptions for deployment and support.

Plan the SonicWall replacement around migration risk

Do not assume that another vendor’s appliance can directly import your existing configuration or that similarly named settings behave identically. Before committing, ask the prospective vendor or your service provider how they will translate policies and VPN settings, preserve network segmentation, schedule the cutover, and roll back if the change causes an outage. Include migration labor and any temporary overlap in your cost comparison.

Neither the 2026 alternatives comparison nor the vendor pricing guidance establishes a neutral, cross-vendor performance winner or a model-level recommendation. The comparison also does not independently confirm current product catalogs, lifecycle details, or prices. Validate these details with each manufacturer before purchasing, and do not infer compliance suitability from a general comparison.
