This is the best first step, but it may not stop playback in every car: the media app or vehicle can also resume or start audio.
Turn off Android Auto’s automatic music setting
- Open your phone’s Settings.
- Search Settings for Android Auto and open its settings.
- Turn off Start music automatically. The wording or location can vary by phone; on some devices the option is nested in Android Auto settings.
Searching Settings is a practical way to find the control because Google’s media help page explains how to use media in Android Auto but does not give a universal path to this toggle. Xiaomi also documents an automatic-start setting for its devices in its Android Auto FAQ; that manufacturer-specific guidance should not be assumed to match every phone.

Why can music still start after you turn it off?
Car startup, Bluetooth connection, and Android Auto launch are related but distinct events. Playback may be triggered by the Android Auto setting, a media app resuming playback, or the vehicle’s infotainment system sending a play command. Community reports describe these possibilities and cases where playback continued after the Android Auto setting was disabled; they are troubleshooting reports, not proof that every vehicle behaves the same way. What to check if the setting does not solve it
If one particular app starts playing
Open that app’s settings and look for controls related to automatic playback, resuming playback, or playback on connection to an external device. The exact wording and availability depend on the app. Google’s Android Auto media help advises users to sign in to the phone app first and directs app-specific troubleshooting to the app developer.
If the car starts or resumes audio
Check the vehicle’s infotainment or audio settings and owner’s manual for autoplay or media-resume controls. Some vehicles may send a play command as they start, but the available settings and behavior are vehicle-specific.

If only one app opens in Android Auto
You can consider removing that app from Android Auto’s launcher as a narrow workaround. In a community discussion, a user reported that removing Podcasts through Customize launcher stopped that app from opening automatically in their case. This is an anecdotal, app-specific workaround; it may make the app less convenient to open from the car display and is not a general fix for playback from other apps or the vehicle. - Playback starts as soon as Bluetooth connects: check the media app’s external-device or resume behavior and the vehicle’s Bluetooth/audio settings.
- Playback starts only when Android Auto launches: recheck Android Auto’s automatic-start setting, then look at the app that resumes.
- Playback starts after a dashboard or steering-wheel action: check whether the vehicle’s interface or a control press is issuing a play command.
These timing clues can help you identify which settings to inspect; they do not establish the cause by themselves. Android Auto can play music and podcasts from compatible apps, which users can select on the car display or access with voice commands, as described in Google’s media help.
