The right smart lock for your home depends first on the door and deadbolt you already have—not on a universal ranking. Choose a replacement deadbolt if you want to swap the hardware, or a retrofit lock if you want to operate a compatible deadbolt from inside. Then check the entry methods, smart-home requirements, backup access, and included accessories before buying.
Start with your door and existing lock
Smart locks sold in the U.S. use different physical formats. A replacement deadbolt takes the place of your existing deadbolt; a retrofit model mounts on the interior side and operates compatible existing hardware. European cylinder locks and multipoint-door systems are physically different from typical North American deadbolts, so a U.S. deadbolt recommendation may not fit them. MatterCatalog’s 2026 guide distinguishes these product formats; check the manufacturer’s current compatibility guide and measurements for your exact door before ordering.

- Replacement deadbolt: Check door preparation, backset and other dimensions, whether the lock has a keyed exterior backup, and whether the package requires a hub or controller.
- Retrofit lock: Confirm the exact thumbturn is supported, that the lock leaves exterior key operation available as intended, and that there is enough interior clearance. Check whether a bridge or hub is required.
- Nonstandard or multipoint door: Do not assume a deadbolt product will work. Verify the door and lock format with the manufacturer or a qualified installer.
Aqara says its U.S. Smart Lock U400 (including model DL-D06E) is compatible with single-cylinder deadbolts, but notes that modifications may be needed for other dimensions and instructs installers to use its supplied strike plate. Those are model-specific fit details, not a general guarantee for every door.
Choose entry methods around who uses the door
Access features solve different problems. A keypad can simplify guest entry, while a physical key provides a familiar fallback. Fingerprints avoid carrying a credential but require enrollment and reliable recognition. Phone or wallet keys can be convenient, but support depends on the lock, phone or wearable, ecosystem, and current software availability. Hands-free proximity features can have particularly narrow device and hub requirements.

- Household members who prefer credentials: Check whether the model supports physical keys, fingerprints, phone access, or wallet keys in the exact ecosystem you use.
- Hands-free unlocking: Verify supported phone and watch models, required home hub, and whether the feature is available in your region and current firmware. Do not infer support from a broad “smart home” or “Matter” label.
The Aqara U400’s U.S. product page lists fingerprint, keypad/password, app and voice control, mechanical key, NFC card, Apple Home Key, and Samsung Wallet Digital Home Key through SmartThings. Aqara says its UWB unlocking requires supported iPhone or Apple Watch models and a Thread-enabled Apple home hub. These are manufacturer-stated capabilities; confirm current device and ecosystem compatibility before purchase.
Compare connectivity and the complete installed system
Matter compatibility does not mean every feature works identically in every smart-home ecosystem. Matter over Thread requires compatible Thread/Matter infrastructure, and wallet credentials, fingerprint use, remote access, and app features may vary by lock and platform. Check the required controller or border router for your chosen setup, and distinguish that from a Wi-Fi bridge or vendor hub: the terms describe different roles.

Before comparing prices, identify everything needed to use the lock as intended. A hub, Thread border router, bridge, keypad, battery, or accessory may be separate or may vary by package. MatterCatalog’s guide, updated September 23, 2026, describes one U400 DL-D06E package as including the lock and rechargeable battery but not an M100 hub; Aqara’s own page lists packages with different included accessories. Verify the actual SKU and box contents on the live manufacturer or retailer listing.

Do not treat Matter, Thread, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth as physical-security grades. Compare documented physical-security certifications and their scope, the lock’s backup access, battery or power arrangements, weather rating where relevant, privacy settings, warranty, and any recurring subscription needed for features you plan to use. A lock that combines a camera with visitor features also deserves a separate look at app permissions and whether its camera view suits your entry.

These are manufacturer-published claims, not independent comparative test results; confirm the current product page and certification details rather than treating them as category-wide performance guarantees.

The reviewer says they tested it on their door for more than two months. The review reported UWB unlocking with iPhones at the time, while Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet Aliro support were expected after certification; it gave no rollout date.
