To pair most Samsung Smart Remotes, turn on the TV, point the remote at its sensor, then press and hold Return and Play/Pause together until the TV displays a connection message. Samsung guidance differs by model and region, so use the buttons and hold time specified for your TV if this sequence does not work.
First, check whether your remote needs pairing
Samsung Smart Remotes use Bluetooth and need to be paired with the TV. A traditional infrared remote generally does not: point it toward the TV’s sensor and keep the path clear. A number pad is a useful clue that a remote may be a classic infrared model, but check your TV’s manual or remote documentation if you are unsure. Samsung explains the difference in its remote-pairing support guidance.

How to pair a Samsung Smart Remote
- Turn on the TV. If the remote cannot do this, use the TV’s physical control button if available.
- Point the remote at the TV’s sensor. Stand near the television and aim toward the sensor. Its location varies; Samsung Gulf says it is typically on the lower-right side or bottom center. See Samsung Gulf’s pairing instructions.
- Hold Return and Play/Pause together. Keep both buttons pressed until a pairing or connection message appears on the screen. Samsung Gulf specifies at least three seconds; Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance says at least five seconds or until the connection message appears. Stop when the TV confirms the connection, and use the instructions for your model if they differ.
- Test a basic control. After the confirmation appears, try Home or volume to check that the remote responds.
If no pairing message appears
- Move closer and aim at the sensor. Keep the remote pointed toward the TV while holding the pairing buttons. Give the TV time to display its status message.
- Check the remote’s power. Make sure replaceable batteries are correctly oriented and have charge. If your remote has a charging port or solar cell, recharge it as appropriate for that model. Samsung’s US troubleshooting guide covers these checks.
- Power-cycle the TV. Samsung US suggests unplugging the TV for 30 seconds, plugging it back in, and trying to pair again.
- Check whether it is an infrared remote. If it is a classic IR model, pairing is not the issue: point it directly toward the TV and remove anything blocking the sensor. Samsung US also describes checking for an IR signal with a phone or digital camera while pressing a remote button. This only checks an infrared emitter; it does not verify Bluetooth pairing.
- Confirm the button sequence for an older remote. Not every Smart Control uses Return plus Play/Pause. Samsung’s guidance for a 2014 Smart Control model, for example, says to hold Return and Guide near the TV. Consult the instructions for that generation or the manual for your exact model.
- Check compatibility before replacing it. If the remote still appears defective, look up the TV’s model number and confirm that a replacement remote is compatible before buying one. Samsung’s pairing and troubleshooting pages do not establish compatibility for every remote sold as a Samsung replacement.
Pairing the remote is not the same as controlling another device
Connecting a Smart Remote to the TV does not by itself program it to operate a set-top box, soundbar, or other external device. Samsung Canada describes a Universal Remote feature for supported devices connected by HDMI; supported devices and features vary. An infrared-controlled device also needs a clear line of sight to the TV’s IR sensor. See Samsung Canada’s Universal Remote guidance.
