Choose smart lights by where they will go
A light made for a sheltered indoor tree is not automatically suitable for a porch or garden. Check the exact product’s indoor or outdoor rating before installation, and match its length and mounting style to the surface you want to decorate.

Check the Matter route and hub requirements
Compatibility depends on how the light connects. According to Philips Hue’s Matter documentation, Hue products connected through a Hue Bridge or Bridge Pro can use the Bridge’s Matter support. The page also describes a direct Matter connection for Matter-enabled bulbs when a Thread Border Router is available, with examples including HomePod mini, fourth-generation Amazon Echo speakers, Nanoleaf, and Google Nest Hub.

- Connecting a bulb directly: The bulb must be Matter-enabled, and the setup needs a Thread Border Router.
- Using Bluetooth-connected Hue products: Hue says these products cannot use the Bridge-enabled Matter integration.
Before buying, identify whether you plan to use Bluetooth, Zigbee through a Bridge, or a direct Matter connection, then check that the exact product supports that route. A compatibility label should not be treated as a guarantee that every feature is available in every ecosystem.

Plan power, mounting, and coverage
Measure the area and decide where the lights and their power connection will go before choosing a length. For outdoor decorations, check exposure to rain and other weather, the mounting surface, and whether the product’s cable and power arrangement will reach the outlet without an improvised extension. For strips and spotlights, account for the run or area to illuminate and the product’s wiring or power needs.
- Measure the span or area to decorate and compare it with the product’s listed length and dimensions.
- Locate the outlet or power source and confirm that the cable arrangement works for the installation.
- Check the rating for the exact SKU and the intended placement, especially outdoors.
- Review bulb spacing, brightness, color and white output, effects, controls, and any hub requirement.
