Use these settings as starting points rather than fixed measurements. Change one band at a time in 1 dB steps, listen at your normal volume, and adjust for your ear shape, fit, hearing, source quality, and personal taste. If the sound becomes harsh or distorted, reduce the player preamp or overall volume before judging the curve.

Recommended Hesh Evo EQ curves at a glance
Enter the values below in the closest five controls your equalizer provides. The labels may differ between devices, but the intent is the same: bass controls the lowest frequencies, low mids control warmth and fullness, mids carry much of the body of speech and instruments, upper mids affect vocal presence, and treble controls high-frequency detail.

Why you cannot set Hesh Evo EQ in the Skullcandy App
Skullcandy’s Hesh Evo support page answers the app-pairing question directly: Hesh Evo does not pair with the Skullcandy App. That means the app cannot store or apply a Hesh Evo-specific custom EQ. The app documentation describing a five-band custom EQ applies to products that are compatible with the app; it is not a universal feature for every Skullcandy headset.
Do not keep resetting Bluetooth or reinstalling the app in an attempt to reveal an Hesh Evo EQ screen. If the headphones are working normally, the missing app connection is expected behavior for this model. Apply equalization after the Bluetooth connection, in the playback chain that is actually producing your audio.
How to apply a curve without creating distortion
- Choose one EQ location. Use the equalizer in your streaming service, media player, phone audio settings, computer audio software, or another trusted playback device. Avoid stacking several EQs unless you deliberately want their combined effect.
- Start from a flat preset. Reset the selected equalizer so an old “bass boost,” loudness, or genre preset is not silently added to the Hesh Evo curve.
- Set the preamp before boosting. Positive EQ boosts can use up digital headroom. If your player has a preamp, lower it by at least the largest boost in the chosen curve. For all three starting curves, a preamp reduction of about 2 dB is a sensible first check. If there is no preamp control, lower the player volume and listen for crackling, harsh peaks, or flattened transients.
- Enter the five values. Use the Music, Podcasts, or Calls row above. If your equalizer uses different band names, map each control to the closest low, low-mid, mid, upper-mid, or high-frequency region rather than changing every slider by guesswork.
- Listen to a familiar reference. Use a recording you know well at the volume you normally use. Check a quiet passage, a dense passage, and a loud chorus or spoken section.
- Make 1 dB changes. If a voice is still buried, raise the mid or upper-mid control by 1 dB. If cymbals, “s,” or room noise become tiring, undo the treble or upper-mid change before reducing everything else.
- Save separate profiles. Name the presets Music, Podcasts, and Calls, and confirm which device or app stores them. Some players save EQ per device, while others apply one profile globally.
The exact menus differ by operating system and player. Look for labels such as “Equalizer,” “Audio effects,” “Playback,” or “Sound,” and verify the EQ changes when the Hesh Evo is selected as the active output. A phone-wide EQ may not affect an individual streaming app, and a media-player EQ may not affect a browser tab or a call.
What each Hesh Evo EQ band is doing
Bass
Bass changes the sense of kick, bass guitar, electronic low end, and rumble. The Music curve adds only 2 dB, enough to give recordings more weight without making the other ranges disappear. Podcasts and calls cut bass because voices do not need the same low-frequency energy, and excess low end can mask consonants at ordinary listening levels.
Low mids
Low mids contribute warmth, chestiness, and fullness. Cutting this region slightly can clean up a thick or boomy voice, but a large cut can make speech and instruments sound thin. That is why the spoken-word curves use only a 1 dB reduction.

Mids
Mids carry the central body of many vocals, guitars, keyboards, and speech. A 1 dB lift in the Music and Podcasts curves keeps voices present after the low end is adjusted. Calls use a 2 dB lift because understanding the other person is more important than preserving a warm tonal balance.
Upper mids
Upper mids are where many speech cues and vocal articulations become easier to follow. The Podcasts and Calls curves each add 2 dB here. This can improve clarity, but too much can make voices nasal, shouty, or fatiguing, so increase it gradually and stop as soon as words become easy to distinguish.
Treble
Treble contributes consonant detail, cymbal definition, and the perception of openness. The curves add only 1 dB. If your source is already bright, noisy, or heavily compressed, leave treble flat or reduce it by 1 dB instead. A brighter setting is not automatically a clearer setting.
Best setting for music
Start with +2 dB bass, 0 dB low mids, +1 dB mids, +1 dB upper mids, and +1 dB treble. This is the most balanced of the three curves: it adds low-end weight while giving vocals and detail a small lift rather than turning the presentation into a bass-only boost.
When to modify the Music curve
- Too much boom: reduce bass to +1 dB, then try a 1 dB low-mid cut if the mix still sounds congested.
- Vocals disappear behind instruments: keep bass at +2 dB and raise mids or upper mids by only 1 dB, not both repeatedly.
- Music sounds sharp: return treble to 0 dB first. If the edge remains, return upper mids to 0 dB.
- Quiet recordings lack impact: increase the player volume only after confirming that the EQ is not clipping. Do not solve distortion by adding more bass.
Genre presets are not required. The same starting curve can be adapted for rock, pop, classical, jazz, electronic music, or spoken interludes by changing the band that produces the specific problem you hear. Recordings, mastering choices, and playback apps vary more than genre labels suggest.

Best setting for podcasts and spoken-word audio
Use −2 dB bass, −1 dB low mids, +1 dB mids, +2 dB upper mids, and +1 dB treble. Reducing low-frequency energy creates room for speech, while the mid and upper-mid lifts emphasize the parts of a voice that distinguish words.
Podcast troubleshooting
- Words are still difficult to separate: raise upper mids by 1 dB, listen for a few minutes, and stop if “s” sounds become piercing.
- The host sounds thin: restore low mids to 0 dB before adding bass. Thinness is often a warmth problem rather than a lack of sub-bass.
- Background music overwhelms speech: lower bass another 1 dB and keep the upper-mid lift. If the app has dialogue enhancement or loudness normalization, test it separately rather than stacking every effect.
- Room noise or hiss becomes prominent: reduce treble to 0 dB. EQ cannot remove noise that is already part of the recording; it can only change how noticeable it is.
Because podcast production differs widely, compare a conversational episode with a heavily edited studio episode before saving a permanent preset. A curve that helps one voice may make another sound nasal.
Best setting for calls
Start with −3 dB bass, −1 dB low mids, +2 dB mids, +2 dB upper mids, and +1 dB treble. This deliberately favors intelligibility over warmth. It is useful when the other caller sounds muffled or when environmental low-frequency noise competes with speech.
Important call limitation
Playback EQ changes what you hear through the Hesh Evo; it does not automatically improve the Hesh Evo microphone signal sent to the other person. Microphone processing, echo cancellation, network quality, and the calling app determine how you sound to them. If the other person says your voice is unclear, adjust the call app’s input and noise controls, move the microphone closer as designed, or change your environment rather than adding more playback treble.
Call-specific adjustments
- Speech is muffled: add 1 dB to mids before adding more upper mids.
- Speech is harsh: lower upper mids by 1 dB, then treble by 1 dB if needed.
- Low voices lose body: return low mids to 0 dB while leaving the bass cut in place.
- The EQ does nothing during a call: the phone or calling application may bypass its media EQ. Test with a recorded clip or use a call-compatible audio control supplied by that device.
How to avoid clipping after EQ boosts
Digital EQ boosts can push a signal beyond the player’s available headroom. Clipping may sound like crackles, brittle peaks, or distortion that appears only on loud notes. It can occur even when the Hesh Evo itself is functioning correctly.

- Note the largest positive value in your preset. In these curves, that maximum is +2 dB.
- Lower the EQ preamp by the same amount when your player provides one.
- If no preamp exists, reduce the player’s output level and keep the Hesh Evo volume at a comfortable setting.
- Disable any additional bass boost, loudness, or volume-maximizer effect while diagnosing the problem.
- Replay the loudest section of your reference track. If distortion disappears, the issue was gain staging rather than the chosen tonal balance.
Do not compensate for clipping by making further boosts. A flatter curve at a clean level is preferable to a more dramatic curve that overloads the signal.

Phone or tablet
A device-level EQ is convenient when you use several players, but some phones expose only a few presets or apply effects only to selected apps. Confirm that the Hesh Evo is the active Bluetooth output and that the EQ changes when you switch between the phone speaker and headphones. If the controls are unavailable, use a streaming or media app with its own equalizer.
Streaming service
An app-level EQ travels with that service and is useful when most of your listening happens there. It may not affect downloaded files played elsewhere, browser audio, games, or calls. Keep the service’s preamp or volume setting conservative when using positive boosts.
Computer
A system or audio-driver EQ can cover music, video, and browser playback, while a media-player EQ affects only that player. Choose one layer, set a flat baseline, and check for other enhancements in the operating system, driver panel, and player before troubleshooting distortion.

Bluetooth and source quality
Hesh Evo uses Bluetooth 5.0. EQ is applied by the source device or software; Bluetooth carries the resulting audio to the headphones. If the connection drops or sounds interrupted, first check distance, obstacles, and competing wireless activity. Skullcandy states that listening can work up to 30+ feet (10+ meters) from the paired device, although the actual experience varies with the environment.

What the published Hesh Evo specifications mean for EQ use
Equalization does not change the headphones’ battery capacity, wireless standard, or charging behavior. Skullcandy lists up to 36+ hours of play time, a 10-minute charge for 3+ hours of play time, and about 1 hour 45 minutes to charge to 100%. These figures are published maximum or stated charging times, not a guarantee for every volume level, codec, temperature, or usage pattern. If a long listening session ends early, check charge level and connection behavior before assuming the EQ caused it.
Quick diagnostic checklist
- Confirm the Hesh Evo is the selected output, not the phone or computer speaker.
- Make sure only one meaningful EQ is active.
- Reset to flat and verify that the problem disappears before changing bands.
- Lower preamp or volume when any positive boost is enabled.
- Change one band by 1 dB and listen to a known passage.
- For calls, distinguish what you hear from what the microphone sends.
- Do not expect the Skullcandy App to provide Hesh Evo EQ; the model is documented as not pairing with that app.
A practical way to keep three reliable presets
Save the Music curve first and listen for a complete session. Duplicate it, make the low-frequency reductions and presence boosts shown in the Podcasts curve, and save that version separately. Create the Calls preset last, with the stronger mid and upper-mid emphasis. Write down any personal changes, such as “treble 0 dB for bright recordings,” so you can recreate them after changing phones, players, or Bluetooth sources.
Recheck your presets after a major app or operating-system update. Equalizer controls can be renamed, reordered, or bypassed for certain output types. The Hesh Evo itself does not provide an app-based custom-EQ memory, so the source device remains responsible for retaining your settings.
Bottom line on Hesh Evo EQ
Use the Music curve for a modestly fuller presentation, the Podcasts curve when speech needs to stand forward, and the Calls curve when intelligibility matters more than warmth. Apply them in the source device or player, make changes in 1 dB steps, and manage headroom so the boosts do not clip. Since Hesh Evo is not compatible with the Skullcandy App, source-side EQ is the correct and supported way to customize what you hear.
