Best Settings to Reduce Battery Drain and Data Use in Gacha Games

For the best battery and data balance, start with the game’s Balanced or Low preset, cap rendering at 30 FPS, lower shadows and special effects, dim the display, and play over Wi‑Fi. On a high-refresh-rate phone, set the display to 60 Hz or match it to the game’s frame-rate target. Turn on Android Battery Saver/Data Saver or iOS Low Power Mode when you need longer sessions, and disable the game’s cellular data when you are away from Wi‑Fi.

These changes reduce the work done by the GPU, the number of frames the screen draws, background activity, and cellular-radio use. They cannot guarantee a fixed percentage of extra battery life because temperature, brightness, signal strength, device hardware, and the game engine all change the result, but they provide a reliable starting point for games such as Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and other graphics-heavy gacha titles.

Setting Battery-first choice Why it helps
Graphics preset Balanced, Medium, or Low Reduces the total GPU workload without requiring you to identify every advanced option.
Frame rate 30 FPS Fewer frames mean less rendering and display work. Android says FPS throttling can deliver up to a 50% GPU power reduction and 20% system power reduction in documented cases.
Shadows and special effects Low or Off These are among the controls HoYoverse specifically recommends lowering when Genshin Impact performance is poor.
Reflections and volumetric effects Low or Off They add expensive per-frame calculations, especially in busy scenes.
Display refresh rate 60 Hz, or the same rate as the game target Prevents the phone from refreshing more often than the game can use.
Brightness Auto-Brightness or the lowest comfortable level The display is often one of the largest continuous battery loads.
Network Wi‑Fi for play, updates, and downloads Apple states that Wi‑Fi uses less power than a cellular network, and it avoids consuming a mobile-data allowance.
System power mode Battery Saver, Data Saver, or Low Power Mode Limits background activity, refresh rate, downloads, or visual effects depending on the operating system.

Play for one session with this profile, then raise only one setting at a time. If the phone becomes hot, return to 30 FPS and lower effects before changing texture quality.

Why these settings reduce drain

Graphics settings determine GPU work

Every frame requires the phone to render geometry, lighting, shadows, reflections, post-processing, and interface elements. Lowering the preset reduces several of those workloads together. Shadows, special effects, reflections, and volumetric effects are usually the most useful first targets because they can be expensive while having less impact on readability than reducing every texture.

HoYoverse’s Help Center tells Genshin Impact players experiencing performance problems to “Lower the in-game graphics settings,” specifically naming Graphics Quality, Shadow Quality, and Special Effects. The same guidance recommends closing unnecessary background applications. The menu labels differ between games, but the principle applies broadly to 3D gacha titles.

Frame rate multiplies the cost of every frame

A 60-FPS target asks the renderer to produce twice as many frames as a 30-FPS target. It can look smoother, but it also keeps the CPU, GPU, memory system, and display bus active more often. Android Developers documents FPS throttling as capable of producing up to a 50% reduction in GPU power and a 20% reduction in overall system power. Those are upper-bound examples, not a promise for a particular phone or game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Refresh rate should match the target

A 120-Hz screen can refresh twice as often as a 60-Hz screen. If the game is capped at 30 FPS, much of that refresh capacity cannot show new game frames. Matching the display to the target avoids spending power on unused refreshes. Android’s documentation describes higher refresh rates as increasing power consumption and recommends matching the refresh rate to the game’s target frame rate when possible.

Heat makes efficiency worse

Graphics-heavy games generate sustained heat. Android Developers explains that a hot device can reduce CPU and GPU speed to cool itself, a process commonly called thermal throttling. You may therefore get both shorter battery life and worse performance: the phone draws substantial power while hot, then downclocks and produces stutter. Lower settings early, rather than waiting for severe throttling.

Adjust the game’s graphics menu in the right order

1. Choose a preset

Set Graphics Quality to Balanced, Medium, or Low. Balanced is a sensible starting point when you still want clear characters and readable environments. Move to Low if the device heats up, the frame rate fluctuates, or a long session matters more than visual detail.

2. Cap frame rate

Select 30 FPS for battery-first play. Use 45 or 60 FPS only when the phone remains comfortable and smoother camera movement is important to you. A stable 30 FPS is generally a better battery trade-off than an unstable 60 FPS that repeatedly drops frames and keeps the hardware working at its limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Lower shadows, effects, reflections, and volumetrics

Set Shadow Quality and Special Effects to Low. If the game exposes Reflection Quality, Volumetric Fog, Global Illumination, or similar options, lower or disable them. These settings affect visual atmosphere more than menu clarity, so they are usually preferable to reducing interface scale.

4. Reduce render resolution and anti-aliasing gradually

Render resolution controls how many pixels the GPU draws before the image is shown on the screen. Lower it one step at a time and check text, distant objects, and combat effects. Reduce anti-aliasing next if it is available. Menu names differ by game, and the available data of official guidance does not assign a universal percentage saving to either control.

5. Disable motion blur and depth of field if available

Motion blur and depth of field are post-processing effects. Turning them off can reduce some GPU work and often improves readability during fast movement. Their individual savings are not quantified by the cited official sources, so treat this as a practical optimization rather than a guaranteed measurement.

6. Keep textures at Medium when Low harms readability

Texture quality primarily affects memory use and visual detail. Lowering textures may help a phone with limited memory, but it is not normally the first setting to change for continuous battery or network savings. If Low textures make text, signs, or character details difficult to read, keep them at Medium and reduce effects instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose 30, 45, or 60 FPS deliberately

Target Best use Trade-off
30 FPS Long sessions, travel, older phones, or a battery emergency Least smooth camera movement, but usually the lowest rendering and heat load.
45 FPS Some newer games and phones that support an intermediate cap More responsive than 30 FPS while using less power than 60 FPS; availability varies.
60 FPS Action-heavy play when the phone stays cool and battery life is less important Smoother motion with substantially more rendering and display work.

After selecting the cap, set the phone’s display refresh rate to 60 Hz or to the closest rate that can present the target cleanly. On a 120-Hz phone, leaving the panel at 120 Hz while playing at 30 FPS can waste power. Some devices switch refresh rates automatically; verify the behavior in Display settings rather than assuming it does.

Android settings for battery and data control

Enable system power saving

  1. Open Settings > Battery.
  2. Turn on Battery Saver, or enable Adaptive Battery if you want Android to manage background activity automatically.
  3. Check the per-app battery panel after a session. It can show whether the game, the display, or another application used the most power.

Battery Saver may limit background work, synchronization, performance, or visual behavior. If notifications arrive late, that is an expected trade-off rather than a game fault.

Limit background mobile data

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver.
  2. Turn on Data Saver before using a cellular connection.
  3. Use the Unrestricted data list only for services that must function in the background. Leave the game restricted unless you specifically need background access.

Data Saver primarily controls background mobile-data use; it does not prevent an active game from using data while you are playing. For a strict cap, open the game’s mobile-data permission in the app or network settings and disable cellular access entirely.

Set the display and game mode

  1. Open Settings > Display and choose 60 Hz or the refresh rate that matches your frame-rate target.
  2. Lower brightness or enable adaptive brightness.
  3. If the phone offers a Game Mode, choose its battery-saving or balanced preference instead of maximum-performance mode.

Android documents Game Mode as a performance-versus-battery trade-off. Labels vary by manufacturer, so look for a mode that explicitly favors battery or balanced performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review usage after playing

Open the battery and network-usage pages after a measured session. Compare the game with the display, hotspot, browser, cloud backup, and messaging apps. A poor cellular signal can keep the radio active and may explain high drain even when the game’s graphics are already low.

iPhone and iPad settings

Use Low Power Mode

  1. Open Settings > Battery.
  2. Turn on Low Power Mode.

Apple documents that Low Power Mode reduces brightness, limits ProMotion displays to up to 60 Hz, disables Background App Refresh and automatic downloads, and reduces visual effects. These changes can extend a session, but background updates and some animations may be delayed.

Stop the game from using cellular data

  1. Open Settings > Cellular or Settings > Mobile Service.
  2. Find the game in the app list and switch its cellular-data access off.
  3. Use the same screen to review the app’s usage statistics. Reset statistics at the start of a billing or measurement period if you want a clean comparison.

With cellular access disabled, the game can update and play only through Wi‑Fi. This is the most reliable way to prevent accidental mobile-data use while traveling or near a cap.

Control brightness and Wi‑Fi behavior

Use Auto-Brightness or lower brightness manually. Apple states that a Wi‑Fi connection uses less power than a cellular network, so prefer Wi‑Fi for play and downloads. If you must avoid cellular overage, disable Wi‑Fi Assist; that feature can switch to cellular data when Wi‑Fi performance is poor.

Prevent large downloads from consuming mobile data

Download initial files and patches on Wi‑Fi

Many gacha games download only a small launcher at first and then retrieve substantial assets. Square Enix states that an internet connection is required on Android to launch and download initial data for its games. Treat every first launch, version update, and resource verification as a Wi‑Fi task.

  1. Connect to a trusted Wi‑Fi network.
  2. Open the game’s official store or launcher update path.
  3. Keep the device connected to power if the download is large, but do not cover a hot phone or leave it in direct sun.
  4. Wait for the in-game resource download to finish before switching back to cellular.

Use official update paths

HoYoverse recommends using the official launcher or the platform’s update tool for Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and Zenless Zone Zero. Official paths reduce the risk of incomplete files and make it clear which assets are being downloaded. Avoid repeatedly uninstalling and reinstalling to solve an update problem; that can force the entire data package to download again.

Watch optional assets

Voice packs, high-resolution texture bundles, language files, and event resources may be optional but large. Read the download prompt and skip packs you will not use. No authoritative source establishes one universal megabytes-per-hour figure for all gacha games, because traffic varies by title, patch, account, region, and event. Use the phone’s per-app counter instead of relying on a generic estimate.

Three practical profiles

Profile Frame rate Graphics Refresh rate Brightness Network Expected heat Visual quality
Battery-first 30 FPS Low; shadows/effects off or low; reduced resolution 60 Hz or matched to 30 FPS where supported Lowest comfortable level Wi‑Fi; cellular disabled for the game Lowest of the three, though demanding scenes can still heat the phone Functional, with fewer effects and detail
Balanced 30 or 45 FPS Balanced/Medium; shadows and effects low 60 Hz or matched to target Auto-Brightness Wi‑Fi preferred; Data Saver on cellular Moderate Clear image with restrained effects
Quality-first 60 FPS High; advanced effects enabled 90 or 120 Hz when the game supports it Bright enough for comfortable viewing Wi‑Fi recommended for downloads Highest; monitor temperature continuously Smoothest motion and richest effects

Exact battery and data savings must be measured on your device. The profile table describes the direction of the trade-off, not a guaranteed runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manage heat before it causes throttling

  • Lower frame rate first, then shadows and special effects, when the phone becomes hot.
  • Move out of direct sunlight and remove thick cases temporarily if it is safe to do so.
  • Avoid charging under a pillow, blanket, or other insulation while playing.
  • Pause when the phone remains uncomfortably hot instead of trying to compensate with a higher-performance mode.
  • Keep the display dim and close unnecessary background applications.

Heat is affected by ambient temperature, signal strength, brightness, charging, and the game scene. There is no safe universal temperature or guaranteed battery-life gain to quote for every model. Comfort and stable performance are better indicators than a promised percentage.

Measure your own battery and data savings

Use a repeatable comparison rather than guessing from one unusually busy session.

  1. Charge the phone to the same starting level for each test.
  2. Record brightness, display refresh rate, network type, and room conditions.
  3. Play the same quest or location for 20 to 30 minutes with the current profile.
  4. Record battery percentage, device temperature by touch, and the game’s mobile-data total in system settings.
  5. Change one variable, such as 60 FPS to 30 FPS, and repeat the same route.
  6. Compare several sessions, not a single run. A patch download, poor signal, or background backup can distort one result.

For data, reset iOS cellular statistics before a test period or note the Android per-app counter at the start and end. Separate patch downloads from ordinary play; otherwise a single update can make routine gameplay appear data-intensive.

Troubleshooting common problems

The game still overheats at 30 FPS

Lower the preset to Low, reduce render resolution, disable reflections and volumetrics, dim the display, and stop charging while playing. Check for poor cellular reception and background downloads. If the phone remains uncomfortable, pause and let it cool; continued play can trigger downclocking and stutter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Performance is choppy after lowering settings

Check that Battery Saver or a manufacturer’s battery mode is not imposing an aggressive performance limit. Keep textures at Medium if menus and objects became hard to read, but leave shadows and effects low. Confirm that the display refresh rate is not switching unpredictably between modes.

Mobile data rises even with Data Saver enabled

Data Saver restricts background use, not data generated while the game is open. Disable cellular access for the game entirely, download patches on Wi‑Fi, and check for optional voice or high-resolution packs. On iPhone, turn off Wi‑Fi Assist if a weak Wi‑Fi signal may be causing cellular fallback.

Notifications or updates arrive late

Battery Saver, Low Power Mode, and Data Saver can delay background activity and automatic downloads. Temporarily turn the relevant mode off when you need background synchronization, then restore it for gaming. This trade-off is expected system behavior.

A patch starts over

Use the official store or launcher update path, stay on a stable Wi‑Fi network, and avoid force-closing the game during verification. Reinstalling can require the full initial download, so reserve that step for a confirmed corrupted installation and perform it only on Wi‑Fi.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A simple routine for travel and data caps

  1. Before leaving Wi‑Fi, finish all pending game and voice-pack downloads.
  2. Disable cellular data for the game in iOS or Android’s per-app controls.
  3. Set 30 FPS, Balanced or Low graphics, 60 Hz display mode, and comfortable low brightness.
  4. Enable Battery Saver or Low Power Mode; enable Data Saver on Android.
  5. Carry a charged USB-C power bank for mobile gaming only if you can keep the phone ventilated while charging.
  6. If the phone becomes hot, lower effects again and take a break rather than switching to a higher-performance mode.

This routine addresses the two largest avoidable surprises: a large patch over cellular data and a hot screen running at a refresh rate the game does not need.
