Best Settings for Heidi’s Legacy: Mountains Calling on PC and Steam Deck

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Heidi’s Legacy: Mountains Calling is not yet available on the current Steam listing, so there is no final, title-specific performance profile to copy. The safest starting point is 1280×720 at low settings on a near-minimum PC, 1920×1080 at medium settings on a Core i3/GTX 650-class system, and 1280×800 or 1280×720 at low-to-medium settings on Steam Deck. Use a 30-FPS cap and V-sync while you establish stable frame times. These are practical starting settings inferred from the published requirements and developer optimization notes, not measured benchmarks or promises of a particular frame rate.

What is known about the PC and Steam Deck release

The official Steam listing currently marks Heidi’s Legacy: Mountains Calling as not yet available. It lists Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux requirements, but it does not publish a title-specific Steam Deck compatibility badge, a measured frame-rate target, a recommended resolution, or a complete graphics-settings menu. Until the release build is live, any “best settings” guide has to distinguish documented facts from sensible starting points.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters most on Steam Deck. A game can meet its stated Linux requirements and still need changes to its renderer, Proton runtime or settings before it behaves consistently on a handheld. The developer has described work aimed at broad hardware support, but no independent FPS test, final Deck rating or named Proton version has been published. Treat the profiles below as a method for finding a stable setup, not as a guarantee that every machine will produce the same result.

Published system requirements

The store requirements are unusually modest by current PC standards. They indicate the class of hardware the developer is targeting, but they do not replace testing on the final build.

Platform Minimum Recommended What the specification tells you
Windows Windows 10; Intel Core 2 Duo; 4 GB RAM; integrated graphics such as Intel HD 3000; DirectX 11; 300 MB available storage Windows 10; Intel Core i3; 8 GB RAM; dedicated graphics such as NVIDIA GTX 650; DirectX 11; 300 MB available storage The minimum tier is aimed at older dual-core systems and integrated graphics. The recommended tier adds memory and a low-end dedicated GPU for more headroom.
SteamOS/Linux SteamOS or Ubuntu 20.04 (64-bit); Core 2 Duo; 4 GB RAM; integrated graphics such as Intel HD 3000; 300 MB available storage SteamOS or Ubuntu 20.04 (64-bit); Core i3; 8 GB RAM; GTX 650-class dedicated graphics; 300 MB available storage The Linux listing gives the same broad CPU, memory and graphics classes. It does not state a Deck-specific target or Proton requirement.

Those numbers describe eligibility, not image quality. A machine at the minimum may launch the game but still need a lower resolution, reduced effects and a frame cap. A system at the recommended tier should have more room for 1080p and medium quality, yet consistency still depends on the final renderer, scene complexity and driver behavior.

Best starting settings for a low-end Windows PC

Use this profile when your hardware is close to minimum

Start conservatively on a Core 2 Duo-class computer with 4 GB of memory and integrated graphics comparable to Intel HD 3000. The aim is readable output with predictable frame times, not the highest preset.

  • Resolution: 1280×720. Use the display’s native resolution if it is lower; otherwise avoid dropping below 1280×720 until you have tested shadows and effects.
  • Preset: Low.
  • Render scale: Native first, then reduce it modestly only if the game remains inconsistent. A small reduction is preferable to making the interface difficult to read.
  • Textures: Low or the lowest setting that avoids visible streaming stutter. With only 4 GB of system memory, leave room for Windows and background processes.
  • Shadows: Low. Shadow quality is one of the first settings to reduce when frame time spikes.
  • Effects: Low.
  • View distance or vegetation distance: Low or medium, depending on the labels exposed by the final menu. Reduce distance options before sacrificing a comfortable resolution.
  • V-sync: On while tuning. It prevents tearing and gives you a consistent reference for whether pacing improves.
  • Frame-rate limit: 30 FPS if the game exposes a cap. This is a stability target, not a published performance claim.

Close browsers, launchers and overlays before testing. On a 4 GB machine, background memory use can matter as much as a single graphics option. Let the game load a representative outdoor area, move through it for several minutes, and watch for hitching rather than judging only the opening scene.

How to tune a minimum-spec machine

  1. Apply the low profile and restart the game so every change is loaded cleanly.
  2. Check whether the interface and terrain are legible at 1280×720. If they are, keep the resolution fixed while you tune performance.
  3. If frame pacing is uneven, lower shadows first, then effects, then view-distance options.
  4. If the game still struggles, reduce render scale one step. Do not change several settings at once; you need to know which option helped.
  5. Once movement is consistent, test raising only textures. If loading stutter appears, return textures to low.
  6. Keep the 30-FPS cap until you have completed a long session without repeated dips. Removing the cap can make the frame rate fluctuate without improving perceived smoothness.

Best starting settings for a recommended Windows PC

Use this profile for a Core i3 and GTX 650-class system

The recommended listing calls for a Core i3, 8 GB RAM and a dedicated GPU such as a GTX 650. Begin at the display’s 1920×1080 mode if your monitor supports it.

  • Resolution: 1920×1080.
  • Preset: Medium.
  • Textures: Medium. Increase only after confirming that scene transitions do not introduce new stalls.
  • Shadows: Low to medium. Keep them below the main preset if outdoor scenes produce spikes.
  • Effects: Medium initially; lower them before reducing resolution if particles or lighting effects cause trouble.
  • View distance: Medium where available. A lower distance setting is usually less disruptive to readability than a large resolution drop.
  • V-sync: On for the first pass.
  • Frame-rate limit: Use 30 FPS if the game offers a cap and your priority is consistency. Only test a higher cap after the release build proves stable on your system.

Raise one option at a time. A sensible order is textures, then effects, then shadows, while leaving resolution at 1080p. If a change causes stutter, revert that single option rather than lowering every setting. This keeps the image clear and identifies the setting that is actually expensive on your hardware.

Best starting settings on Steam Deck

Recommended first profile

Use the Deck’s native 1280×800 resolution for a 16:10 display, or 1280×720 if you prefer a 16:9 output. Start with low-to-medium quality, V-sync enabled and a 30-FPS cap if the game provides one.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
  • Resolution: 1280×800 or 1280×720. Keep the native mode until you know that scaling is required.
  • Preset: Low, then medium for individual options that do not affect frame pacing.
  • Shadows: Low.
  • Effects: Low to medium.
  • Textures: Medium if loading remains smooth; otherwise low.
  • V-sync: On while establishing a baseline.
  • Frame-rate limit: 30 FPS if available. The official material does not promise that the game will hold 30 FPS on Deck; this cap simply gives you a conservative target for testing.

Keep SteamOS and the Proton/runtime components current, then test the released build before raising the cap or increasing effects. Do not select a Proton version because it worked for a different game; the correct choice can change with the final executable and its compatibility layer.

Deck tuning procedure

  1. Install the release build and allow SteamOS to finish any shader or compatibility setup before judging performance.
  2. Set 1280×800 or 1280×720, low-to-medium quality, V-sync on and a 30-FPS cap.
  3. Play through a demanding outdoor section rather than stopping at the title screen. Mountains, vegetation, weather and animated characters are more useful tests than a static menu.
  4. If pacing is uneven, reduce shadows first, then effects. Keep the resolution unchanged so text and interface elements remain readable.
  5. If stutter occurs during traversal, lower textures or view distance one step and repeat the same route.
  6. Only after a stable session should you test a higher frame cap or medium settings. Change one variable per run and record whether the improvement is visible.

Battery life, fan noise and temperature are personal priorities, so the same 30-FPS profile can be preferable even when a higher cap appears possible. The published sources do not provide a Deck wattage, battery or temperature test, and no such figures should be inferred from the requirements.

Why low and medium presets are reasonable

The developer has made two changes that support a conservative but broad compatibility strategy. During a private playtest, the team found crashes on certain machines and changed the Godot rendering mode from Forward+ to Compatibility. Forward+ expects more modern graphics hardware; Compatibility is intended to run on a wider range of systems. The developer said the change made the demo run smoothly on more machines.

A later development update describes a rewrite of goat rendering and animation and says it “significantly improves performance on lower-end hardware.” The same update includes the statement: “The game now runs a lot smoother, and on more machines than before.” Those are developer-reported improvements, not an independent benchmark, so they justify trying low or medium settings but do not establish a universal FPS result.

What FPS should you expect?

There is no published title-specific FPS figure for Windows or Steam Deck. The official listing supplies hardware requirements but no frame-rate target, and the developer updates do not include a measured benchmark. It would be misleading to promise 30 FPS locked, 60 FPS, or any other number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use frame-time consistency as your practical test. A capped 30 FPS that remains steady through outdoor traversal will usually feel better than an uncapped result that swings widely. If your machine holds the cap without repeated hitching, you can experiment with higher quality or a higher cap; if it cannot, lower shadows, effects, textures or distance options in that order before making a large resolution sacrifice.

Steam Deck compatibility: what is and is not confirmed

The current information does not include a final Steam Deck Verified, Playable or Unsupported badge for this title. It also does not identify a required Proton release or provide a measured Deck test. The absence of a badge is not proof that the game will fail on Deck; it means compatibility has not been formally documented on the listing available now.

Check the store page again when the game launches. A release-build badge, updated requirements or developer notes can supersede the pre-release guidance here. Until then, keep the default SteamOS runtime current, use the conservative 30-FPS profile and be prepared to adjust settings after the first public build.

Common problems and fixes

The game crashes on launch

  • Confirm that Windows 10 or a supported 64-bit SteamOS/Linux environment is installed. The Linux listing specifically names SteamOS or Ubuntu 20.04 (64-bit).
  • Update your graphics driver and SteamOS before changing in-game quality settings.
  • Disable overlays and background capture tools for the first test.
  • On Deck, leave the runtime at its current default while testing the released build. Switch Proton only when a developer update or a reproducible launch failure gives you a reason.
  • If the failure persists, record the operating system, GPU, driver or runtime, and the exact point of failure before reporting it. A generic “low FPS” report cannot identify a launch problem.

Frame pacing is uneven even at low settings

  1. Enable V-sync and set a 30-FPS cap.
  2. Lower shadows, then effects, then view distance.
  3. On systems with 4 GB RAM, close browsers and other memory-heavy applications.
  4. Test the same route or scene after each change. A one-time hitch during loading is different from repeated stalls while moving.
  5. If the image is still unstable, reduce render scale modestly while keeping the interface at a readable resolution.

The image looks blurry

Restore native resolution or raise render scale before increasing expensive effects. On a minimum-spec PC, a clean 1280×720 image with low shadows is generally a better compromise than a heavily reduced scale with medium effects. On Deck, use 1280×800 or 1280×720 first and change only one scaling control at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Textures cause loading stutter

Return textures to low and repeat the same route. Texture quality can increase memory pressure even when average frame rate appears acceptable. The minimum Windows and Linux specifications list only 4 GB RAM, so that tier has little room for background applications or unusually large texture allocations.

A repeatable settings checklist

  • Verify the operating system and hardware against the published minimum or recommended tier.
  • Install the game on a drive with at least 300 MB available, as listed by the store requirements.
  • Start at 1280×720 low on a near-minimum PC, 1920×1080 medium on a recommended PC, or 1280×800/720 low-to-medium on Deck.
  • Enable V-sync and use a 30-FPS cap while establishing a baseline.
  • Test a demanding outdoor route for several minutes.
  • Reduce shadows, effects and distance options before making a major resolution cut.
  • Change one setting per test and keep notes so you can undo a regression.
  • Recheck the Steam listing after launch for a compatibility badge, final requirements and any updated graphics guidance.

Bottom line for current hardware

For now, the most defensible approach is conservative: preserve a readable resolution, keep shadows and effects low, enable V-sync and target 30 FPS while you test. The very low published requirements and the developer’s renderer and animation optimizations suggest that older PCs and handheld hardware are part of the intended audience, but the game’s unreleased status means final performance remains unverified. Treat every higher-cap or higher-quality setting as an experiment on the release build rather than a published guarantee.
