There is no universal best AMD FSR 4 preset for handheld gaming PCs—and many handhelds do not have confirmed official support for the feature. AMD now calls its machine-learning upscaling technology FSR Upscaling; some games may still label it FSR 4. If your specific handheld and game expose the feature, choose a preset in the game’s graphics menu according to your frame-rate target and image-quality preference. What “FSR 4” means on a handheld
AMD’s current name for its machine-learning-based FSR 4 technology is FSR Upscaling. A game menu may retain the older “FSR 4” label. AMD also uses “FSR Redstone” for a broader feature suite, so the names are not necessarily interchangeable in a game’s settings. When checking a game or device, note the exact name and version that appear rather than assuming every option containing “FSR” refers to the same feature.

Support is selective and hardware-dependent. AMD’s current compatibility information lists certain Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics products. GPUOpen’s documented SDK path says FSR Upscaling 4 requires a discrete RX 9000 or RX 7000 GPU; on other hardware, that path automatically selects FSR 3.1.5. Those statements do not establish general official FSR Upscaling support for handheld APUs. A handheld running a game that supports FSR, or displaying an FSR-related menu entry, is not by itself proof that it is using the ML-based FSR Upscaling feature.

Game integration matters as well as hardware. Some supported games expose native FSR Upscaling in their menus. AMD says some games with FSR 3.1-or-later integration can instead be upgraded through AMD Software. Neither route means that every game, handheld, or driver combination will show the same option. The feature a player can select depends on the particular game integration and the supported graphics hardware and software path.

Check whether your handheld and game support it
Before changing settings, identify the handheld model, its GPU or APU, its operating system, and the game you want to run. A setting documented for a desktop graphics card—or for one handheld model—does not establish compatibility on another device. The game, device, driver and menu label all matter; the product category “handheld gaming PC” is not a complete compatibility specification.
- Check the game menu. Open the game’s graphics, video, or upscaling settings and look for an FSR entry. Note the exact label and version shown, if any. If the game offers an FSR quality preset, that is the in-game route AMD describes for supported systems.
- Check the device’s supported software path. Use the handheld manufacturer’s driver and software instructions for your model. AMD’s driver release notes state that AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition does not include support for handheld gaming devices, so desktop Adrenalin instructions should not be treated as a supported handheld setup.
- Verify the exact combination. Confirm that the feature is available for your device, driver, and game—not merely that the game supports FSR on some other hardware. A compatibility statement for selected Radeon graphics products should not be generalized to all integrated or handheld graphics.
- Keep the names straight. If a menu says FSR, check whether it identifies a version or feature type. AMD’s current term for the ML-based feature is FSR Upscaling, while older game menus may use FSR 4. RSR, covered below, is a separate feature.
- Recheck after a game or device update. Game integrations and OEM-supported software paths can differ. If an option appears or disappears after an update, verify what the current game menu and manufacturer guidance say rather than relying on a desktop guide written for another configuration.
If the game does not offer FSR Upscaling and your device’s official software does not provide a supported way to enable it, there is no confirmed FSR 4 preset to select. Avoid treating unofficial DLL swaps, leaked models, or community modifications as official AMD support; AMD’s compatibility information and GPUOpen’s documented SDK path do not establish them as supported handheld settings.
Choose a preset only when the game exposes the feature
When FSR is available, select it in the game’s own graphics or video menu and compare the presets offered there. AMD’s documented general method is to choose an in-game FSR quality preset. The available options and their exact names depend on the game. The available documentation does not establish that Quality, Balanced, or Performance is best on every handheld, or even that every game presents the same choices.

Then use the options the game actually provides. If you prefer image quality over a higher frame rate, that preference is relevant; if you are trying to meet a particular frame-rate target, that goal is relevant too. Neither preference creates a universally correct setting.

A practical way to compare the available choices
- Choose a consistent situation. Pick a repeatable scene in the game and keep the same display resolution and other graphics settings while comparing presets. This helps you compare the choices in your own setup instead of mixing changes together.
- Change one option at a time. Try the available FSR choices individually. Look at motion and fine detail as well as a still image, and note whether the game meets your own frame-rate target. Keep in mind that what looks best or feels smoothest is personal and can vary from one game to another.
- Make the choice for that game. Choose the option that best fits your priorities in that title. If the visual trade-off is not worthwhile, use another game-supported upscaling or resolution setting, or turn FSR off.
- Revisit the decision when circumstances change. If you change the display resolution, game, or other graphics settings, the earlier comparison may no longer answer the same question. Check the available choices again under the configuration you intend to use.
This is a way to make a device-specific choice, not a claim that one preset has been tested or wins across handhelds. There is no device-by-device FSR 4 preset comparison or handheld-specific performance statistic to support a universal ranking. AMD’s desktop performance figures should not be transferred to handheld APUs as though they were measurements of those devices.
Do not confuse FSR Upscaling with RSR
Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) is a separate, driver-level fallback described by ASUS for games that do not have FSR. It is not FSR 4, and its instructions should not be presented as an FSR 4 preset recommendation. Seeing an RSR option does not show that the game supports FSR Upscaling, and using RSR does not change the game’s FSR version.
For the 1080p example in ASUS’s ROG Ally guide, the instructions are to run the game fullscreen at either 1280×720 or 1600×900, then enable RSR so the driver scales the image to 1080p. This is Ally-specific guidance; it does not establish the same settings or availability for other handhelds, nor does it turn RSR into FSR Upscaling. If you own a different handheld, check its manufacturer’s instructions rather than copying the Ally steps.

What AMD has said about future handheld support
In a report quoting AMD SVP and GM of Computing and Graphics Jack Huynh, Windows Central reported a translated statement that AMD planned to expand machine-learning FSR 4 to APUs, gaming laptops, and handheld devices by the end of 2026. Huynh was quoted as saying: “We will expand the machine learning and AI-based FSR 4 technology, which was preemptively introduced in existing external graphics cards, to the entire product lineup by the end of this year, including APUs, gaming laptops, and handheld devices. We plan to respond in two directions: existing APUs and launching new product lines.”
The same report attributed another translated statement to Huynh: “We have newly developed a dedicated model of FSR 4 that is lightweight and tailored for APU environments. We are focusing on delivering excellent game graphics and low latency.” These are reported plans and statements, not confirmation that the feature is generally available on handhelds as of October 13, 2026. A stated intention and a device-specific release are different things: the quotation does not name a compatible handheld, game, driver, or preset. Check AMD’s compatibility information and the handheld maker’s release notes for the specific device before relying on broader support.
What you can—and cannot—conclude before choosing settings
The facts that matter most are whether the feature is officially available on your exact hardware, how the game integrates it, and what choices its menu provides. AMD’s current compatibility information lists selected RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics products; GPUOpen’s SDK documentation describes a discrete-GPU requirement for FSR Upscaling 4 in that path and automatic selection of FSR 3.1.5 on other hardware. These descriptions are not a general handheld APU compatibility guarantee.

There is also no supported basis here for promising a specific frame-rate gain, naming a best preset for a particular handheld, or recommending a purchase to obtain FSR Upscaling. The available facts do not include comparable handheld tests, model-by-model results, prices, or a universal setting recipe. Treat any recommendation as conditional on the actual handheld and game rather than as a setting that every owner can reproduce.

If your device gains support, the practical next step remains straightforward: use the manufacturer-supported software path, confirm the feature in the game, and compare the available in-game presets against your own priorities. If the feature is not present, do not confuse a different scaling option or an unofficial workaround with confirmed FSR Upscaling support.
