For most Android users, the best place to start is the Digital Wellbeing usage chart: it shows which apps account for screen time and how often you open your phone. Then choose one control that fits the problem: app timers for a daily app limit, Focus mode for a work or study block, or Bedtime mode and Do Not Disturb for quieter evenings. These features address different habits; Google’s documentation does not rank them by effectiveness or promise that any one will reduce your screen time.
Which Android feature fits your screen-time problem?
Android’s Digital Wellbeing tools are most useful when you match the control to the moment you want to change. A daily app limit is different from a temporary work block, and both are different from quieting notifications at night. Start with the issue you actually notice rather than turning on every control at once.

| Your problem | Feature to try | What it does | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| You are not sure where your time goes | Digital Wellbeing usage chart | Shows screen time by app, times opened or unlocked, and notifications received. | Availability and navigation vary by phone. |
| You want a daily cap for one app | App timer | Closes and dims the selected app after its daily limit runs out. | Timers reset at midnight; some work or school accounts may not support them. |
| You want certain apps paused during a work or study block | Focus mode | Pauses selected apps and their notifications while it is active; it can be started manually or scheduled. | “Take a break” can temporarily unpause apps. |
| You want a recurring bedtime boundary | Bedtime mode | Runs on a schedule or during a selected charging window, with optional display changes. | Available controls and paths differ by device. |
| You want fewer calls, alerts, or other interruptions | Do Not Disturb or Modes | Applies notification filters and schedules. | Some documented Modes instructions apply only to Android 14 and later; settings vary by phone. |
This is a comparison of what the controls do, not a ranking of results. The official Android help pages describe setup and behavior, but do not establish which feature works best for a particular person.
One way to distinguish the options is to ask what boundary you want. App timers limit one app over the course of a day. Focus mode pauses chosen apps during a particular block. Bedtime mode pairs an evening schedule or charging window with optional screen and interruption changes. Do Not Disturb or Modes focuses on who or what can interrupt you. These controls can overlap in purpose, but they are not interchangeable: a notification filter is not itself a daily app allowance, and a timer is not a scheduled work block.

Start with the usage chart, not a guess
Digital Wellbeing can show three useful signals: time spent in apps, how often the device is opened or unlocked, and notifications received. Google notes that this information is available on some phones, so the exact chart and its availability depend on the device. See Google’s Digital Wellbeing guide for the documented controls.
Find Digital Wellbeing in your phone’s Settings. If the menu is hard to locate, use the Settings search field for “Digital Wellbeing”; menu labels and paths can vary by manufacturer and Android version. Google also documents an option called “Show icon in the app list” if you prefer to open the feature from the launcher.
Look for the app that stands out, or notice whether frequent openings and notifications are part of the pattern. The chart is a way to decide where to focus, not evidence that monitoring itself reduces use. A practical approach is to select one relevant control, use it in the situation you want to change, and later check your own chart to decide whether to adjust it. That is a personal way to evaluate the setting, not a tested protocol or a guaranteed outcome.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe signals can point to different kinds of friction. High time in one app may make an App timer worth trying. Many openings may suggest that a scheduled Focus mode could address repeated checking during a chosen block. A high notification count may make notification filters more relevant than restricting an app’s daily use. These are ways to interpret the chart and choose a control; the chart does not diagnose a cause or tell you which setting will work.
Google describes the chart as a way to see how you spend time on your phone, including how often you unlock it and how long you use each app. Its figures are descriptive, so use them as a starting point rather than a score to meet. You can also decide that a high-use app is necessary for work, study, navigation, or communication and choose not to limit it. The aim is to select a boundary that fits your own use, not to minimize every number.
Set a daily limit with App timers
Use an App timer when you want an individual app to have a daily allowance. The app closes and its icon dims when the timer runs out. The timer resets at midnight, and removing it restores access before then, so it is a boundary you can revise rather than a permanent lock.
- Open Settings → Digital Wellbeing → App timers.
- Select the app you want to limit.
- Choose Set timer, set the daily allowance, and confirm.
- When the limit is reached, the app closes and its icon dims. The timer resets at midnight.
To get access again before midnight, remove the timer from the same App timers area. This makes the feature useful as a reminder and friction point, but not an unchangeable restriction. Some work and school accounts might not support app timers.

Choose the app and allowance deliberately: the documented control sets a daily limit for a selected app, rather than a single limit shared across all apps. It does not prevent you from removing the timer, and it does not keep the app closed after the next midnight reset. If the timer feels too strict for a day when you need the app, you can remove it; if you want to keep a boundary, you can leave it in place and let it reset. The main trade-off is a visible interruption at the limit, not a permanent lockout.
Limit a website in Chrome
Google’s instructions also describe setting a timer for a site visited in Chrome. This applies to Chrome’s documented site-timer flow, not a general claim that every browser or every way of opening a site is covered.
- Open the Digital Wellbeing usage chart and select Chrome.
- If needed, choose the option to show the sites you visit.
- Set a timer beside the site you want to limit.
If Chrome or site details do not appear, check whether your device exposes that option; the documented availability can vary. The Google Digital Wellbeing guide covers the Chrome site-timer path.
This option can be useful when a particular site, rather than all of Chrome, is what you want to address. Follow the site-specific path from Chrome in the usage chart and set the timer beside the site shown. Do not assume that the same control covers the same site in another browser or through a different app: Google’s instructions describe Chrome’s site timer.

Pause selected apps with Focus mode
Focus mode is for a defined block of time when selected apps should be paused. While it is active, those apps and their notifications are paused. You can switch it on manually or make a schedule, then take a temporary break if you need to use a paused app.
- Open Settings → Digital Wellbeing and select Focus mode.
- Choose the apps to pause. Select apps that tend to pull you away during the specific block you want to protect.
- Choose to turn Focus mode on now, or set a schedule for when it should run.
- If you need temporary access while it is active, select Take a break and choose the available break option.
Because a break can unpause apps temporarily, Focus mode is not the same as a hard restriction. If you keep taking breaks, that may be useful information: the paused apps may be necessary for the task, or the schedule may not fit your day. Adjust which apps are selected or when the schedule runs rather than assuming the control has failed.
Manual activation suits an occasional block; a schedule is an option when you want Focus mode to run at recurring times. Select only the apps you intend to pause, since this setting pauses both those apps and their notifications while active. If an app is needed during the block, a temporary break is available, but that means the app is not continuously paused during that interval. The practical choice is between a flexible pause that you can override and a routine that starts on a schedule—not a claim that one setup is more effective.

Use Bedtime mode for an evening routine
Bedtime mode can run on a weekly schedule or during a selected charging-time window. Depending on the phone, its options can include Do Not Disturb and display changes such as grayscale, dimmed wallpaper, dark theme, or keeping the screen dark by turning off the always-on display. Not every device offers the same options or navigation.
- Open Settings → Digital Wellbeing and choose Bedtime mode. If the path differs, search Settings or consult the phone maker’s instructions.
- Choose a weekly schedule or the option to turn Bedtime mode on while charging between selected times.
- Review the available options and enable only the display or interruption changes that suit your routine.
- Save the schedule and confirm that the selected days and time window are correct.
Bedtime mode can change the appearance and interruption behavior of the phone; it does not establish that a user will sleep better or use the phone less. Treat its display choices as settings to try, not as a health intervention.
The schedule and charging-window choices serve different routines. A weekly schedule lets you set recurring days and times; the charging option uses a selected time window while the phone is charging. Check which one your device offers and confirm the days and hours before relying on it. Likewise, screen changes are optional choices rather than guaranteed results: a phone may offer grayscale, dimmed wallpaper, dark theme, or turning off the always-on display, but availability differs by device.
Google separately documents bedtime activity information based on phone usage and sensor permissions. On Pixel phones, cough and snore information is not intended for medical use and does not guarantee results. Do not use that information to diagnose a condition or replace medical advice. See Google’s Set a bedtime schedule instructions for the bedtime-specific details.
Reduce interruptions with Do Not Disturb or Modes
Use Do Not Disturb or Android Modes when the main problem is interruptions rather than the amount of time spent in one app. These settings can manage which people or apps may notify you and can be scheduled. Quick Settings provides access to the feature, though the exact controls and names differ across phones.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Some of Google’s current Modes instructions apply only to Android 14 and later. If a setting described in the guide is absent, the phone’s Android version or manufacturer interface may differ. Review the notification filters before relying on a schedule so you know which people or apps are allowed through. Google’s Modes and Do Not Disturb guide describes the relevant options and version qualifications.
This is the most directly relevant choice when a notification is the interruption you want to manage. Review the filters so you know which people or apps are allowed to notify you, rather than assuming that all alerts will be silenced or that a particular contact will be allowed through by default. A schedule can apply the chosen settings at recurring times; Quick Settings is a way to reach the control. The exact choices depend on the phone, so check the available filters on your device.

Which settings are different for supervised accounts?
On Android 15 and later, Google directs children using supervised accounts to Parental controls for Digital Wellbeing app activity and related controls. That is a distinct navigation path from the general Settings instructions above. Do not assume that the standard adult-account path will appear on a supervised child’s device. See Google’s Digital Wellbeing instructions for supervised accounts.
This qualification is about where to find the controls for a supervised account; it should not be blended into the general steps for other users. If you are setting up a child’s Android 15-or-later device, start with Parental controls as Google directs. If the account or Android version differs, the available path may differ too.
What to check when a control is missing or behaves differently
- The Settings path does not match: Search Settings for “Digital Wellbeing,” “Focus mode,” or “Bedtime mode.” Google notes that steps can vary by device; Android release, phone maker, region, and account type can affect what appears.
- An app timer is unavailable: Some work or school accounts might not support timers. The feature’s availability can also vary by device.
- You cannot find the Chrome site timer: Use the Chrome entry in the Digital Wellbeing chart and check whether sites need to be shown. The documented instructions are specific to Chrome, and the option may not appear on every phone.
- Modes options are missing: Confirm the Android version and inspect the phone’s own Do Not Disturb or Modes settings. Some documented steps require Android 14 or later, and phone settings vary.
- You are configuring a child’s supervised device: For Android 15 and later, use the Parental controls path Google documents for supervised accounts.
When your phone’s menus differ, its Settings search and manufacturer support are the best next checks; the Google help pages do not guarantee identical paths across Android devices.
Availability is not uniform across phones, Android releases, regions, or account types. A missing option does not necessarily mean you have overlooked it: the relevant feature may not be offered on that device or account, or its name and location may differ. Google’s general Digital Wellbeing instructions note that steps can vary by device. Use the phone’s Settings search first, then consult manufacturer support if the path still does not match.
A practical way to choose and adjust
- Identify the friction point. Use the usage chart if you do not know which app or notification pattern deserves attention.
- Choose one matching control. Pick an App timer for a daily cap, Focus mode for a work or study block, Bedtime mode for a recurring evening routine, or Do Not Disturb/Modes for notification filtering.
- Set the narrowest useful boundary. Limit only the app, time window, or interruptions relevant to the problem. This keeps unrelated phone functions outside the change.
- Observe your own use and revise. Check the chart later and change the selection or schedule if it does not fit. The documentation explains the controls, not a proven outcome or a universal best setting.
These features are software settings. Google’s documentation does not require buying a separate device or accessory, and it does not establish that any particular setting will reduce screen time for every user.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Android Digital Wellbeing feature should I try first?
If you are unsure where your time goes, start with the usage chart and look at app time, openings or unlocks, and notifications. Then choose one control that matches the issue: an App timer for a daily app cap, Focus mode for a work or study block, Bedtime mode for an evening routine, or Do Not Disturb/Modes for notification interruptions. Google does not rank these features by effectiveness.

Best Value
Can I set a timer for a website instead of an entire app?
Google documents a site-timer option for Chrome: open the Digital Wellbeing chart, select Chrome, show sites if needed, and set a timer beside the site. This documented flow is specific to Chrome, and it may not appear on every device.
Does Focus mode block apps permanently?
No. Focus mode pauses selected apps and their notifications while it is active. You can turn it on manually or schedule it, and you can use “Take a break” to temporarily unpause apps.
What can Bedtime mode change?
Depending on the phone, Bedtime mode can run on a weekly schedule or while charging during selected times. Available options can include Do Not Disturb, grayscale, dimmed wallpaper, dark theme, and turning off the always-on display. Options vary by device.
Are Do Not Disturb and Focus mode the same?
No. Focus mode pauses selected apps and their notifications. Do Not Disturb or Modes manages interruptions, including which people or apps may notify you, and can be scheduled. Their settings vary by phone.
Why can’t I find a Digital Wellbeing setting shown in a guide?
Paths and availability can vary by phone, Android version, region, and account type. Search Settings for the feature name and check manufacturer support if the option is still missing. Some Modes instructions apply to Android 14 and later, and supervised accounts on Android 15 and later use the Parental controls path Google documents.
Does Bedtime mode or the usage chart guarantee less screen time or better sleep?
No. Google’s reviewed help pages explain controls and information available on some phones, but do not establish that a feature will reduce screen time for everyone or improve sleep. Pixel cough and snore information is not intended for medical use and does not guarantee results.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Use the Digital Wellbeing chart to identify a pattern, then choose the control that fits it: App timers for a daily app limit, Focus mode for a scheduled or manual pause, Bedtime mode for an evening routine, and Do Not Disturb or Modes for notification filters. Check your phone’s available settings and adjust based on your own use; the controls are not ranked by proven effectiveness, and availability varies by device and account.
