Best Server-Side-Only Valheim Mods for a Dedicated Server (and Which Still Need Clients)

Server-side labels are not proof that friends can join without mods. This guide compares Server devcommands, PlantEverything, PlantEasily, MultiUserChest, Quick Stack Store Sort Trash Restock, ExtraSlots and Valheim Plus, with client requirements and deployment advice.

Short answer: Start with Server devcommands if your priority is administration without asking friends to install anything. For farming and storage, PlantEverything, MultiUserChest and Quick Stack Store Sort Trash Restock are promising server-side-capable choices, but their current package instructions must be checked because catalog labels do not prove that every feature works with an unmodded client. PlantEasily is cataloged client-side, ExtraSlots explicitly requires the client for its extra inventory interface, and Valheim Plus is a broad overhaul rather than a low-risk strict server-only mod.

If you need a place to run a Valheim dedicated server alongside these mods, Godlike.Host offers Valheim game-server hosting with its own game panel, SFTP/FTP access and up to three free backups a day with restore. Check each mod’s current dedicated-server instructions before deployment.

What “server-side-only” means in Valheim

A strict server-side-only policy means the dedicated server runs the mod while players join with an otherwise unmodified game client. That is the standard you need when friends should not download, configure or update a mod just to connect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are three practical compatibility categories:

  • Strict server-only: the server provides the feature and an unmodded client can use it.
  • Server-side-capable or optional client: the package may run on the server alone, but some features, menus or convenience controls may require a matching client installation.
  • Client-required: players must install the package, normally because the feature changes the client interface, input handling or visual presentation.

Thunderstore’s “Server-side” and “Client-side” tags are useful filters, not a guarantee. A package tagged with both can still require a client for a particular function, while a server-focused description may omit an important multiplayer caveat. Treat the package’s current documentation and release notes as the final authority before deploying.

Why the distinction matters

  • Joining friction: a strict server-only setup lets a new player connect without matching a mod list.
  • Version management: every required client mod creates another update that must stay compatible with the server.
  • Saved-world risk: farming, inventory, recipe and drop changes can affect persistent data even after a mod is removed.
  • Support burden: when only the server is modified, troubleshooting has fewer moving parts.

Before installing anything, decide whether “friends do not need to install” is an absolute requirement or merely a preference. That single decision changes which entries below are suitable.

Comparison: the current shortlist

Mod Primary role Catalog/client signal Can you treat it as strict server-only? Likely impact Main compatibility concern Update/release evidence
Server devcommands Administration and operator utilities Server-focused package; confirm the current dedicated-server instructions Best starting point, after verifying the package version Administrative actions and moderation workflows Do not expose operator powers to ordinary players Thunderstore catalog snapshot dated October 15, 2026; supported Valheim release not stated in the package summary
PlantEverything Farming and decoration Tagged both Server-side and Client-side Not proven; use as a shared-install candidate unless its current documentation confirms client-free operation Plantable flora, bushes, trees and decorative growth Planting rules may overlap with other farming or content mods Thunderstore catalog snapshot dated October 15, 2026; supported release not stated in the package summary
PlantEasily Farming workflow Tagged Client-side No under a strict policy unless newer documentation changes that requirement Grid, row and bulk-planting conveniences; optional auto-replanting Client input and placement behavior Thunderstore catalog snapshot dated October 15, 2026; supported release not stated in the package summary
MultiUserChest Shared storage Tagged both Server-side and Client-side Not proven; check whether every participating client must install it Allows multiple players to interact with one chest simultaneously Chest UI and storage synchronization with other inventory mods Thunderstore catalog snapshot dated October 15, 2026; supported release not stated in the package summary
Quick Stack Store Sort Trash Restock Storage quality of life Shared-install candidate; verify current multiplayer requirements Unconfirmed Quick stack, restock, store-all, sorting and trash actions Overlapping hotkeys, storage rules and inventory packages Thunderstore catalog and PC Gamer roundup dated September 28, 2026; supported release not stated in the package summary
ExtraSlots Inventory and equipment expansion Documentation requires the player’s client for extra UI and slot behavior No Additional equipment, food, ammo, utility, quick and inventory slots Explicit incompatibility warning for other inventory-management mods Thunderstore catalog snapshot dated October 15, 2026; supported release not stated in the package summary
Valheim Plus Broad configurable overhaul Requirements vary by feature and release Not a safe strict-server-only default Many configurable gameplay and quality-of-life systems Large configuration surface and client matching PC Gamer context dated September 28, 2026; exact supported release not stated in the summary

Best strict-first choice: Server devcommands

Thunderstore describes Server devcommands as “Enables devcommands and utilities for server admins.” That makes it the clearest match for a server whose main need is moderation and operator control rather than new content.

What it is suited to

  • Running administrative workflows from the dedicated server.
  • Helping an operator correct a stuck character, investigate a problem or manage a test world.
  • Keeping administrative powers separate from gameplay additions such as new crops, inventory rows or loot systems.

Safe deployment sequence

  1. Record the exact Valheim build and the dedicated-server software version currently in use.
  2. Read the package’s current dedicated-server installation notes; do not assume that a client installation procedure is sufficient for a headless server.
  3. Back up the world files and player data before enabling the plugin.
  4. Install the required server-side mod framework and the package exactly as documented for the server edition.
  5. Start a test instance and verify that an ordinary player account cannot invoke administrator-only actions.
  6. Only then deploy it to the live world, keeping the previous files available for rollback.

The catalog count for Server devcommands was 1.3 million downloads in the October 15, 2026 snapshot. That is a volatile download figure, not a guarantee of compatibility with your Valheim release or with another plugin.

Farming mods: useful, but not automatically client-free

PlantEverything

PlantEverything is described by Thunderstore as allowing the cultivator to plant “berry bushes, thistle, dandelions, mushrooms, previously unavailable tree types, and other decorative flora.” It is attractive for a community server that wants ornamental landscaping or more control over food production.

The catalog tags it both Server-side and Client-side. That means you should not promise friends a no-install experience based on the tag alone. Use the following policy:

  • If the current package documentation explicitly confirms unmodded-client support, test that mode on a copy of the world.
  • If the documentation is ambiguous, classify PlantEverything as a shared-install mod and tell every player to use the same package version.
  • Keep a backup before allowing players to place newly enabled plants, because those objects become part of the saved world.

PlantEverything had 2.8 million Thunderstore downloads in the October 15, 2026 catalog snapshot. The number indicates adoption, not a server-only guarantee.

PlantEasily

PlantEasily focuses on the work of placing crops rather than expanding the list of plantable objects. Thunderstore lists evenly spaced crops, row and column planting, grid snapping, invalid-placement prevention, bulk harvest and optional automatic replanting.

Its catalog classification is Client-side. Placement previews, grid controls and bulk actions are exactly the kind of behavior that can depend on a player’s input and interface, so it should not be included in a strict server-only mod pack. If you choose it, plan for every participating player to install and maintain the same client package, and verify that its controls do not conflict with another farming or building mod.

Storage quality of life: test the client boundary carefully

MultiUserChest

MultiUserChest is described as allowing several players to interact with the same chest at the same time. That addresses a common cooperative-server bottleneck: players gathering around one storage container and taking turns opening it.

The package is tagged both Server-side and Client-side. Before putting it on a live world, test two ordinary players opening, moving and withdrawing items simultaneously. Confirm what each player sees when the chest contents change, then disconnect one client and reconnect it. If the package documentation requires the client, do not advertise it as a server-only convenience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check for overlap with any other mod that changes chest windows, inventory sorting or storage permissions. Two packages can appear harmless separately yet compete for the same interface or synchronization events.

Quick Stack Store Sort Trash Restock

This package groups several storage actions in one system. Its catalog description calls it “Quick Stacking, Sorting, Trashing and more in one cohesive package.” A PC Gamer roundup dated September 28, 2026 summarizes quick stack, restock, store-all and related actions.

Because these actions touch both the player inventory and nearby containers, treat the package as a shared-install candidate until its current multiplayer instructions say otherwise. Test the full action set, not just one button:

  • Move matching items from the player into nearby chests.
  • Restock a crafting or building supply.
  • Store all eligible items without moving tools or quest-critical objects.
  • Sort a chest that contains items added by another mod.
  • Trash an item and confirm that the action cannot be triggered accidentally.

Do not install this alongside another inventory manager without checking hotkeys and event handling. If both packages offer sorting or quick-transfer commands, disable one feature set rather than accepting unpredictable behavior.

Why ExtraSlots is not server-only

ExtraSlots is a substantial inventory expansion, but it fails a strict no-client-install policy. Its documentation states that a player needs ExtraSlots installed to use the additional inventory interface and slot behavior.

The package claims support for:

  • Up to six quick slots.
  • Three food slots.
  • Three ammo slots.
  • Two miscellaneous slots.
  • Five utility-item slots.
  • Five additional inventory rows.

Those capacities are package claims, not independent testing. More importantly, the client requirement applies to the feature itself: installing ExtraSlots only on the server does not give an unmodded player the extra interface or reliable slot behavior.

Its documentation also warns about incompatibility with other inventory-management mods. If you adopt it for a modded community, remove or disable overlapping inventory packages first, introduce it on a test world, and require every player to use the same release before opening the live server.

ExtraSlots recorded 1.5 million Thunderstore downloads in the October 15, 2026 snapshot. That popularity does not change its client requirement.

Valheim Plus: broad overhaul, not a strict default

PC Gamer’s September 28, 2026 coverage describes Valheim Plus as a broad, toggleable overhaul and discusses Grantapher’s community-sourced version after the original mod stopped publishing updates. The breadth is its strength: one package can expose many configurable changes instead of making you assemble separate quality-of-life mods.

It is also why it does not belong in a strict server-only starter list. Different features and releases can have different client requirements, and a large configuration surface makes it harder to identify which setting caused a world, recipe, inventory or connection problem.

When it makes sense

  • Your group is willing to maintain a synchronized client pack.
  • You want a coordinated overhaul rather than one narrowly defined server utility.
  • You can test every enabled option on a copy of the world and document the configuration for all players.

When to avoid it

  • You promise that friends can join without installing anything.
  • You need a minimal change set that is easy to roll back.
  • Your server already uses several inventory, crafting or progression mods and you cannot isolate conflicts.

How to choose mods that friends do not need to install

  1. Write the policy first. Mark the server as “strict server-only” or “shared client pack.” Do not mix the two descriptions.
  2. Classify the feature. Administration is the safest starting point. Interface, input, inventory and visual changes are more likely to require a client.
  3. Read the current package page. Look for explicit multiplayer wording, not just a Server-side tag.
  4. Check saved-data impact. New plants, recipes, drops, containers and inventory structures can persist in the world or player data.
  5. Install one package at a time. A single change gives you a meaningful rollback point and makes connection failures easier to diagnose.
  6. Test with an unmodded client. Use a non-operator account and test the actual feature. A successful connection alone does not prove that every function works.
  7. Test with two players. This is essential for shared chests, sorting, quick transfer and any synchronized inventory action.
  8. Record versions and configuration. Keep the package version, Valheim build and configuration file together with your backup notes.
  9. Publish a short player notice. If a client is required, state the exact package and version before anyone joins the live world.

Compatibility and rollback checklist

Before installation

  • Copy the world and player-save files to a separate backup location.
  • Note the current server build and the current mod-loader version.
  • List existing mods that touch farming, containers, inventory, crafting, recipes or progression.
  • Decide which account is allowed to use administrative commands.

During testing

  • Use a disposable test world for new plants, storage behavior and inventory layouts.
  • Connect once with an unmodded client and once with the proposed client package, if applicable.
  • Test reconnecting after a server restart; some client/server mismatches appear only after a fresh session.
  • Watch for missing items, duplicated items, inaccessible containers, failed placements or changed recipes.

If something fails

  • Players cannot connect: remove the newest package from the test server, restore the previous configuration and verify the package’s client requirement.
  • The feature appears for the host but not others: test with an ordinary account; an operator-only function may be working as designed.
  • Inventory or chest actions misbehave: disable overlapping inventory and storage packages, then reintroduce them one at a time.
  • Plants or world objects are missing: stop making further changes, restore the backup and confirm whether the package supports the current world and Valheim release.
  • An update breaks the server: keep the previous package files and configuration, roll back to the last known-good combination and wait for compatible release notes before retrying.

What the catalog numbers do—and do not—tell you

Thunderstore download totals are useful context but are volatile and change over time. The October 15, 2026 catalog snapshot listed:

Package Downloads in the snapshot How to interpret the figure
BepInExPack Valheim 7.3 million Evidence of broad catalog usage; not proof that a particular plugin is server-only
PlantEverything 2.8 million Shows adoption of the farming/decoration package; client requirements still need checking
EpicLoot 2.3 million Catalog popularity only; it is not part of the strict server-only shortlist here
EquipmentAndQuickSlots 1.6 million Catalog popularity only; it is not part of the strict server-only shortlist here
ExtraSlots 1.5 million Popular inventory expansion, but its documentation requires the client for extra UI and slot behavior
Server devcommands 1.3 million Strong interest in server administration; still verify the current dedicated-server instructions

None of these figures supplies a supported-Valheim-release guarantee. Treat them as a snapshot taken on October 15, 2026, not as a compatibility test or recommendation by itself.

Recommendations by server type

Friends who will not install mods

Use Server devcommands first, and add other packages only after their current documentation explicitly confirms client-free multiplayer. Keep PlantEasily, ExtraSlots and broad Valheim Plus configurations out of this profile.

A community server willing to maintain a client pack

PlantEverything, PlantEasily, MultiUserChest, Quick Stack Store Sort Trash Restock and ExtraSlots can be evaluated as a coordinated pack, one at a time. Publish the exact versions, test two-player interactions and keep a rollback copy.

A heavily customized overhaul server

Valheim Plus may be appropriate when the group accepts synchronized clients and a larger troubleshooting burden. Treat every enabled option as a separate change during testing, even though the settings arrive in one package.

Bottom line

For a genuinely no-client-install dedicated server, Server devcommands is the clearest first choice. Farming and storage packages can be valuable, but PlantEverything and MultiUserChest are tagged for both sides, PlantEasily is cataloged client-side, and Quick Stack Store Sort Trash Restock still needs a package-level multiplayer check. ExtraSlots is explicitly client-dependent, while Valheim Plus is a broad overhaul that belongs in a synchronized mod pack rather than a strict server-only setup.
