Best Modded Vintage Story Server Hosting in 2026

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most modded Vintage Story groups, OXY.Games is the easiest starting point: its Netherlands location, one-click ModDB installation and automatic mod downloads to joining players remove the most common setup work. Its 6 GB Surge tier is advertised for modded worlds with 8–12 players at €9.60 per month after the introductory discount. Choose Kinetic Hosting instead when you expect a large or unusually demanding modpack, Gravel Host when the lowest published entry price matters more than convenience, or BisectHosting when data-center choice is your priority.

Those recommendations are based on provider and comparison-page claims available on October 15, 2026, not independent load testing. Prices, locations, mod counts, discounts and uptime statements can change, so confirm the live plan before paying.

Why a modded world needs a third-party host

Vintage Story’s integrated hosting dashboard is convenient for an unmodded server, but the Vintage Story Wiki states that it does not currently permit adding mods and that its servers are located only in central Europe. A community that wants ModDB content therefore needs a rented third-party server or a self-hosted machine.

A rented host supplies an always-on process, a control panel and remote storage. The important differences are not just headline price. You need enough memory for the world and its mods, a mod-install method your administrators can use, a location close to your players, recoverable backups and support when an update breaks a dependency.

OXY.Games About 8,600 ModDB mods, one-click installation, automatic downloads to joining players, Netherlands data center, advertised 99.99% node uptime; plans from €3.20/month; 6 GB Surge at €9.60/month after the introductory discount Small to medium groups that want the least manual mod work The RAM guidance and uptime are provider claims; introductory and renewal pricing must be checked at checkout
Kinetic Hosting Vintage Story servers marketed for complex, heavily modded worlds; one-click mod installation, automatic backups and 24/7 support; 4 GB $4.99/month, 8 GB $7.99/month, and plans up to 124 GB for $123.99/month Large or technically demanding modpacks Only the listed tiers and maximum price are stated; intermediate tiers, locations and refund terms are not stated in the cited material
Gravel Host Homesteader plan: 3 GB RAM, up to 8 players, $4.50/month; mods uploaded to the Mods folder with FTP or the built-in file manager, then loaded after restart and pushed to clients Budget-conscious groups comfortable with file uploads Manual ZIP management takes more administration than a catalog-based installer
BisectHosting An iTechGuides comparison published in September 2026 places it first among 13 hosts at 9.0/10, citing 3 GB for $8.99/month and 21 locations Players spread across regions who need location choice These figures come from a comparison page, not hands-on testing; verify the provider’s live offer

How much RAM does a modded Vintage Story server need?

There is no universal number. Mod code, world-generation settings, automation, entity counts and how quickly players explore can move a server from comfortable to memory-bound. Two provider heuristics give a useful starting point:

  • OXY.Games publishes an “official formula” of 1 GB base memory plus approximately 300 MB per player.
  • OXY.Games recommends moving to 6 GB for a modded 8–12-player world.
  • Four Seasons Hosting says 6 GB comfortably fits roughly 10–15 players on a modded world and positions 16 GB for large public servers.

These are hosting-provider rules of thumb rather than an independent benchmark. Treat them as a sizing floor, then leave headroom for exploration spikes and future mods.

Use case Starting point from the published guidance How to interpret it
Small modded group About 1 GB base + 300 MB per player A mathematical starting point, not a promise that every modpack will run well
8–12 players with mods 6 GB recommended by OXY.Games A practical tier for a private or friends-only world; monitor usage after adding content
10–15 players with mods 6 GB described as comfortable by Four Seasons Hosting Provider guidance; intensive world generation can require more
Large public community 16 GB aimed at large public servers by Four Seasons Hosting Consider this a planning target, not a guaranteed capacity

For example, the formula gives 3.4 GB for eight players (1 GB + 8 × 0.3 GB). That does not make a 3 GB plan a safe choice: the arithmetic leaves no allowance for measurement differences, a heavy modpack or a burst of world generation. A 6 GB tier gives substantially more room for the same group.

Mod installation and updates

One-click catalogs are the least error-prone approach when your mods are available through the host’s supported index. OXY.Games advertises about 8,600 ModDB mods, one-click installation and automatic downloads to players who join. Kinetic Hosting also advertises one-click installation.

A file-based workflow is more flexible for a private ZIP, a development build or a mod that is not in a catalog. Gravel Host’s documented process is to upload files into the server’s Mods folder through FTP or its built-in file manager, restart the server and let the files be pushed to clients. This adds two administrator tasks: preserving the exact file version and making sure every client receives the same dependency set.

Memory tiers and upgrade cost

Compare the price of the next RAM tier, not only the entry plan. A cheap 3 GB server can become more expensive than a 6 GB plan if you outgrow it and have to migrate repeatedly. Ask whether a resize keeps the same disk, IP address and backups; those details are not established for every host in the published material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Location and latency

Choose the data center nearest to the majority of players. OXY.Games identifies the Netherlands for its Vintage Story offering. The iTechGuides comparison attributes 21 locations to BisectHosting. Kinetic Hosting and Gravel Host locations are not specified in the cited information, so obtain the exact city or region before ordering.

Backups, console access and support

A modded world is especially vulnerable to a bad update. Kinetic Hosting explicitly includes automatic backups and 24/7 support. For every other candidate, verify backup frequency, retention, whether backups are stored separately from the server, and whether you can trigger a manual backup before changing mods. Also confirm that the panel provides a live console and file access; these are useful comparison axes, but availability and limits vary by plan.

Price, renewal and refunds

Separate recurring price from a first-term promotion. OXY.Games advertises plans from €3.20 per month and identifies €9.60 per month for the 6 GB Surge tier after its introductory discount. Kinetic Hosting lists monthly prices in US dollars, while Gravel Host lists $4.50 and BisectHosting’s comparison figure is $8.99. Currency conversion, tax, billing period and renewal price can change the real total. Refund terms are not stated in the available figures; read the host’s current policy before committing.

Host-by-host guidance

OXY.Games: easiest ModDB workflow

OXY.Games is the clearest fit when the administrator wants to avoid manual ZIP handling. The advertised catalog of about 8,600 ModDB mods and one-click deployment can shorten setup, and automatic downloads to joining players reduce client-side instructions. Its Netherlands location is a sensible choice for European groups, while the advertised 99.99% figure refers to node uptime rather than a guarantee that your individual world will never stop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The provider’s own sizing guidance points to 6 GB for an 8–12-player modded world. At €9.60 per month after the introductory discount, that tier should be compared with the renewal price and with the cost of moving up if exploration or automation pushes memory usage higher. Ask how quickly a new ModDB release appears in the catalog and how to install a ZIP that is not indexed.

Kinetic Hosting: headroom for heavy packs

Kinetic Hosting positions its Vintage Story service for complex, heavily modded worlds. One-click installation, automatic backups and 24/7 support address the three operational problems that most often consume an administrator’s time: deploying dependencies, recovering a damaged save and getting help outside business hours.

The published ladder starts at 4 GB for $4.99 per month and 8 GB for $7.99, with plans extending to 124 GB for $123.99. The large upper tier is relevant to public communities, but RAM alone does not determine player capacity. Confirm CPU allocation, storage, location and any limits on backup retention before selecting a very large plan.

Gravel Host: lowest stated entry price

Gravel Host’s Homesteader plan is listed at $4.50 per month for up to eight players and 3 GB of RAM. That combination can suit a lightly modded friends-only world if monitoring shows the memory budget is sufficient.

The trade-off is administration. You upload each mod to the Mods folder through FTP or the built-in file manager, restart, and then ensure clients receive matching files. Keep a local copy of every ZIP and record its version and dependencies. Before an update, make a backup and change one mod at a time so a faulty file is easy to identify.

BisectHosting: broad location choice

An iTechGuides comparison dated September 2026 ranks BisectHosting first of 13 services at 9.0/10, citing 3 GB for $8.99 per month and 21 locations. This makes it interesting for communities distributed across continents, where latency may matter more than a small monthly price difference.

The score is an editorial comparison, not an independent test of your world. Treat the 3 GB figure and location count as leads to verify on the live provider page. Confirm that the selected city is actually available for Vintage Story, whether mod installation is one-click or manual, and what backup and support features are included in that tier.

Set up a modded server without losing your world

  1. Count players and classify the modpack. Record the usual and peak concurrent players. Separate cosmetic or quality-of-life mods from systems that add world generation, machines, mobs or automation; the latter are more likely to increase memory and CPU load.
  2. Select a location. Put the server near most players. If the group is international, test latency from the largest regions or choose a host that publishes multiple cities.
  3. Choose RAM with upgrade room. Use the 1 GB + approximately 300 MB per-player heuristic only as a starting point. For an 8–12-player modded group, compare 6 GB tiers first rather than assuming a 3 GB budget plan will be enough.
  4. Deploy an unmodded instance. Start the server once, accept any terms shown by the panel, and confirm that a player can connect. This separates hosting or network problems from mod problems.
  5. Back up the clean world. Download or snapshot the world before installing content. Verify that you can see the backup and know how to restore it.
  6. Install the mod set. Use the host’s one-click catalog when it contains the required versions. Otherwise upload the exact ZIP files to Mods with FTP, SFTP or the panel’s file manager, according to the host’s instructions.
  7. Match client files. Every player needs the same mod names, versions and dependencies. Automatic client downloads simplify this step only when the host supports the specific mod and version.
  8. Restart and read the console. A restart loads new files. Watch for missing dependencies, duplicate files, version mismatches and Java or .NET errors (depending on the host’s implementation). Do not invite the whole community until a test client joins successfully.
  9. Generate a test area. Travel a short distance, place machines or blocks added by the pack and trigger any major world-generation features. This reveals memory spikes before the main settlement is at risk.
  10. Document the working set. Keep a plain-text manifest of filenames, versions, dependencies and installation order. It makes rollback and migration possible if a catalog entry changes.

Troubleshoot the problems that appear most often

Players are rejected for missing or mismatched mods

Compare the server’s Mods folder with one affected player’s files. Remove duplicate versions, install every listed dependency and make sure the game version required by the mod matches the server. If automatic downloads are enabled, confirm that the host actually supports that mod rather than assuming every ModDB file is synchronized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server stops during exploration

Check the console and memory graph around the time of the stop. World-generation and entity-heavy mods can create short spikes that a simple player-count formula misses. Restore the last known-good backup, disable the newest or most demanding mod, then retest with one change at a time. Upgrade RAM only after confirming that the host is not reporting a separate CPU, disk or crash-loop problem.

An update breaks an established save

Do not overwrite the only copy. Stop the server, preserve the current world directory, restore the pre-update backup to a separate test instance if the panel allows it, and check the mod author’s stated migration requirements. Keep the old mod ZIPs until the new version has been exercised in the test world.

Latency is high even though the server is online

Measure from several players, not only the administrator’s connection. A distant data center, a congested route or a CPU-bound server can feel similar in game. Move to a closer published location when available, and inspect server timing or console warnings before blaming the network.

Which host should you choose?

  • Choose OXY.Games for an 8–12-player European group that values one-click ModDB deployment and automatic client downloads. Start by checking the renewal price and whether every required mod is in its catalog.
  • Choose Kinetic Hosting when the pack is known to be heavy, the community may grow, or automatic backups and round-the-clock support justify paying for more headroom.
  • Choose Gravel Host when $4.50 per month and an eight-player ceiling fit your group and an administrator is comfortable maintaining ZIP files through FTP or a file manager.
  • Investigate BisectHosting when its 21-location figure matches where your players live. Verify the comparison’s 3 GB/$8.99 details and the actual mod workflow before ordering.

Do not select solely by the lowest number in a pricing table. Match the RAM to the modpack, the location to the player base and the installation method to the administrator’s tolerance for manual file work.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Is mod installation supported on the exact Vintage Story plan, not only on another game or a higher tier?
  • Can you install a ModDB file that is not in the host’s catalog?
  • Does the stated RAM refer to the server process alone, and can you resize without rebuilding the world?
  • Where is the actual data center, and can players from your main regions reach it with acceptable latency?
  • How often are backups made, how long are they retained, and can you download or restore one yourself?
  • Is there a live console, FTP/SFTP or file-manager access, and a documented restart procedure?
  • What support hours, response channels and refund terms apply to the plan?
  • What will the price be after any introductory discount, including tax and currency conversion?
  • Can you export the world and mod files if you later move to another host?

Recheck all figures and policies on October 15, 2026, or on the day you subscribe. Hosting catalogs, ModDB counts, locations, uptime claims and promotions are changeable commercial details.
