SELinux is a mandatory access-control layer: a loaded policy decides which confined processes may access labeled files, network ports, and other objects. If an application is blocked, diagnose the recorded AVC denial and correct the policy context before considering a custom rule.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
This guide covers the three SELinux states, distribution-specific preparation, a safe enablement workflow, AVC troubleshooting, persistent configuration, and recovery when a service fails.

What SELinux is and why a VPS needs it
Traditional Linux permissions are discretionary: the owner or administrator can usually change access with ownership and mode bits. SELinux adds mandatory access control (MAC) on top. The kernel checks the SELinux policy whenever a process attempts to access a file, directory, socket, port, capability, or other labeled object. A process can have sufficient Unix permissions and still be denied by SELinux.
SELinux policies also confine services to domains. A web server, database, SSH daemon, and other services can be restricted to the resources they are expected to use. If an attacker exploits a network-facing service, confinement can limit what that process can read or modify, provided the policy and labels are correct.

The policy is label-based. Files and directories carry security contexts, and ports have SELinux port types. A service runs in a process domain. Access is permitted only when the loaded policy allows that domain to interact with the target type. This is why moving a service to a new directory or port can cause a denial even when ordinary ownership and firewall settings look correct.
SELinux is not a firewall, a replacement for patching, or a substitute for least-privilege Unix accounts. It is an additional control that must be integrated with your VPS image, service layout, deployment process, backups, and monitoring.
The three SELinux states
| State | What happens | Appropriate use | Security implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enforcing | The loaded policy is applied and denied operations are blocked and logged. | Normal production operation after validation. | Recommended operating mode. Red Hat describes it as the default and recommended mode in its Enterprise Linux documentation. |
| Permissive | The policy is loaded and objects remain labeled, but denied operations are logged rather than blocked. | Short, controlled testing and diagnosis while developing a configuration. | Operations continue, but the host is not receiving SELinux enforcement. |
| Disabled | The policy is not loaded and persistent SELinux labeling is not maintained. | Only when the image or kernel cannot support SELinux, or during a deliberate migration plan. | Removes SELinux protection and can make later relabeling or re-enablement more disruptive. |
Red Hat’s documentation describes permissive mode as useful for policy development and debugging. It is not a production security solution. A more targeted option is a permissive domain: semanage permissive -a <domain> leaves the rest of the host enforcing while allowing one named domain to log rather than block. Red Hat warns that permissive domains can compromise security, so use them only for a defined test and remove them afterward.
Check your VPS before enabling SELinux
Do not assume that every provider image supports SELinux. The image, kernel configuration, filesystem types, boot process, and installed policy packages all matter.
Confirm the distribution and image
Record the distribution release, kernel, VPS image family, and whether you have an out-of-band console. A console or rescue path is important because a mislabeled filesystem or an incorrect boot setting can prevent normal SSH access.
Verify kernel and filesystem support
Red Hat-family and Fedora images commonly offer SELinux-integrated policies, but the provider still controls which kernel and image variants are available. Debian specifically requires an SELinux-capable kernel and filesystems that can store security labels. Ubuntu and Debian images also vary by provider. Verify support for the exact image rather than relying on the distribution name alone.

Plan a rollback
- Keep a tested SSH session and the provider’s serial, web, or rescue console available.
- Back up service configuration and record current file ownership, ports, enabled services, and deployment paths.
- Schedule a maintenance window for the first enforcing reboot.
- Know how to boot or edit the distribution’s SELinux configuration from the console if a labeling error interrupts startup.
Distribution differences you must account for
There is no single installation recipe for every Linux VPS. Policy packages, utility names, default policy choices, audit integration, and persistence files differ. Use your image’s official repositories and documentation.
| VPS family | What to verify | Management and audit considerations | Persistence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Hat-family | Provider image includes an SELinux-capable kernel and a supported policy. | Install the image’s SELinux policy-management and audit packages from its official repositories; inspect the active policy with sestatus. |
Set the persistent mode in /etc/selinux/config or the distribution-equivalent file. |
| Fedora | Confirm the provider’s kernel, filesystem, and policy package combination. | Use the Fedora repository packages and tools supplied for that release; package names can change between releases. | Use the configuration mechanism documented for the installed release. |
| Debian | Confirm an SELinux-capable kernel and label-supporting filesystems before installing policy components. | Install Debian’s policy, management, and audit tooling from its official repositories; do not copy a Red Hat package list. | Use Debian’s documented equivalent of the SELinux configuration file and verify after reboot. |
| Ubuntu | Check whether the specific provider image supports SELinux and whether its kernel and filesystems expose the required hooks. | Tool and policy availability is image- and release-dependent; install only packages provided for that release. | Follow the image’s documented persistence mechanism and test it from the console. |
After installation, check that the policy is actually loaded. A package being present does not prove that the VPS booted with SELinux active.
A safe workflow for enabling SELinux
1. Inspect the current state
Run both state commands and save the output:
sestatus
getenforce
sestatus reports whether SELinux is enabled, the loaded policy type, the current mode, and related status. getenforce returns the concise current mode. Also inspect existing audit records before making changes; old denials can otherwise be mistaken for failures caused by your test.
2. Install policy-management and audit tooling
Use the official repository for the exact image to install its SELinux policy, management utilities, and audit tooling. You need, at minimum, the commands used to inspect state, manage file contexts and ports, inspect booleans, search AVC records, and install a reviewed local module. Package names differ by distribution and release, so do not transplant a package command from another family.

3. Start in permissive mode for controlled validation
If the image is currently disabled, follow the distribution’s documented enablement and relabeling procedure. Once SELinux is loaded, switch the running system to permissive:
sudo setenforce 0
getenforce
The second command should report Permissive. This runtime change lasts only until reboot. Exercise every important path while permissive: SSH login, web requests, application workers, database connections, backup jobs, log rotation, monitoring, and deployment hooks. Record the exact time and actions so you can separate test events from unrelated AVCs.

4. Fix labels, ports, and booleans before writing policy
Most first failures are configuration mismatches rather than missing policy rules.
- File labels: If a service reads or writes a nonstandard path, add a persistent file-context rule with
semanage fcontext -a, then apply it withrestorecon. A direct relabel without a persistent rule will be lost when files are recreated or relabeled later. - Port labels: If a daemon listens on a nonstandard port, inspect the policy’s allowed port types and add the port with
semanage portrather than generating a broad allow rule. - Booleans: List available policy switches with
semanage boolean -l. A boolean may intentionally enable a documented service behavior without changing the policy module.
After each correction, reproduce the specific operation and check whether the denial disappears. Change one category at a time so you know which adjustment solved the problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Collect and interpret AVC denials
SELinux records denied operations as AVC (Access Vector Cache) messages. Depending on the image, inspect /var/log/audit/audit.log or the system journal. Search recent records with ausearch; narrow the time range and service where possible.
sudo ausearch -m AVC -ts recent
Read the source process domain, target type, class, requested permission, target path or port, and whether the event happened during your reproduction. Then use audit2why to obtain an explanation:
sudo audit2why < /var/log/audit/audit.log
An explanation may point to a mislabeled object, an available boolean, an incorrect service transition, or a genuinely absent allow rule. An AVC is evidence of a denied request, not an automatic instruction to grant it.
6. Create a narrow custom policy only when justified
If labels, ports, booleans, and service domains are correct and the application genuinely requires an access not covered by the shipped policy, generate a local module for the specific, reviewed behavior. Inspect every rule, remove unrelated permissions, install the module with semodule, and test the service again.

Red Hat explicitly advises that you should not use audit2allow to generate a local module as your first response to a denial. Blindly converting every logged event can grant more access than the application needs, preserve a labeling mistake, or encode an attacker’s behavior. Treat generated output as a draft for review, not as a fix to pipe directly into production.
7. Return to enforcing and verify
When the complete workflow succeeds in permissive mode, switch the running host to enforcing:
sudo setenforce 1
getenforce
Test the same SSH, web, database, backup, monitoring, and deployment paths again. A successful permissive test is not sufficient; enforcing mode is where denials become operational failures.
8. Persist the setting across reboot
Runtime setenforce changes do not survive a reboot. Set SELINUX=enforcing in /etc/selinux/config, or use the equivalent configuration mechanism for your distribution, then reboot during the maintenance window. Verify after startup:
getenforce
sestatus
Confirm that the mode is Enforcing, the intended policy is loaded, and the service checks pass. Include this verification in provisioning and configuration-management code so a replacement VPS does not silently return to permissive or disabled mode.
How to troubleshoot a blocked web or application service
Symptom: the service cannot read a moved document root
Check the context on the new path and compare it with a path known to work under the distribution policy. If the path is wrong, create a persistent file-context mapping with semanage fcontext and apply it using restorecon. Re-test the request. Do not respond by granting the service unrestricted access to the entire filesystem.
Best Value
Symptom: the daemon listens on a custom port but clients receive failures
First separate SELinux from the network path: verify that the daemon is listening and that the VPS firewall and provider security rules permit the port. Then inspect the port’s SELinux label and add the nonstandard port with semanage port using the type expected by the service policy. Reproduce one connection and inspect the resulting AVC records.
Symptom: an optional feature is denied
List policy booleans with semanage boolean -l. If a documented boolean corresponds to the feature, enable it deliberately and persist it using the policy-management command for that boolean. Record why it is enabled; booleans can expand a service’s permitted behavior.
Symptom: the service runs under the wrong domain
Inspect the AVC’s source domain and the service startup configuration. A custom init unit, wrapper, container boundary, or manually launched binary can prevent the expected domain transition. Correct the service definition or transition first. A local allow rule should not be used to mask a process running in an unintended domain.
Symptom: no AVC appears
Confirm that the audit service or journal integration is running, that you reproduced the failure after clearing your time window, and that you are searching the correct log. Also check ordinary Unix permissions, application logs, firewall rules, missing files, and resource limits. SELinux cannot explain every service failure.
Permissive mode versus a permissive domain
Whole-system permissive mode is easy to enable and useful during an initial migration, but it leaves every domain unblocked. A permissive domain is narrower: semanage permissive -a <domain> keeps other domains enforcing while the named domain logs denials. The narrower scope does not make it harmless. A compromised process in that domain can perform operations that enforcing policy would have stopped.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use either mode only for a defined diagnostic period. Track the test owner, start and end time, affected service, and denials under review. Remove a permissive domain with the corresponding semanage permissive deletion operation once the service is corrected, then confirm the host is fully enforcing.
Operational checklist for a production VPS
- Verify the provider image, kernel, and filesystems support SELinux.
- Install the policy, management, and audit components from the image’s official repositories.
- Record
sestatusandgetenforcebefore changing anything. - Use a console or rescue path and keep configuration backups.
- Stage changes in permissive mode only long enough to exercise real workloads.
- Correct file contexts with persistent
semanage fcontextrules andrestorecon. - Label nonstandard ports with
semanage portand inspect relevant booleans. - Use
ausearchandaudit2whyto understand each AVC. - Review any local module before installing it with
semodule. - Return to enforcing, persist
SELINUX=enforcingthrough the distribution’s supported configuration, reboot, and verify. - Re-test backups, monitoring, deployments, scheduled jobs, and recovery procedures after every policy change.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaving the VPS permissive: Permissive mode feels successful because requests continue, but it is not enforcing protection.
- Disabling SELinux to make an error disappear: This removes the control instead of identifying the incorrect label, port, boolean, or transition.
- Using
audit2allowimmediately: A generated rule may be broad or may hide a configuration error. - Relabeling only once: Without a persistent file-context rule, a future restore, package update, or newly created file can return to the wrong context.
- Changing several controls at once: You lose the ability to identify which label, boolean, or port setting solved the denial.
- Ignoring distribution differences: Commands and persistence behavior that work on one image may not exist or may have different package names on another.
Bottom line
For a supported VPS image, the defensible target is SELinux enforcing mode with policy-aware service configuration. Validate the image first, collect evidence in a controlled permissive phase, repair labels, ports, and booleans, and create only narrowly reviewed local policy when the shipped policy cannot express a legitimate requirement. Persist the setting and verify it after reboot; a one-time setenforce 1 is not a durable configuration.
