Short answer: XSD is the breadth-oriented choice among the four funds cited here, with 44 holdings as of March 31, 2026. SOXX offers a 30-stock, established semiconductor basket, SMH is a more concentrated 25-stock portfolio that includes Micron Technology, and PSI uses a quarterly factor-driven selection process with a higher 0.55% expense ratio. None is a memory-only ETF, and none eliminates memory-cycle risk.
To reduce dependence on memory producers, compare more than the headline holding count. Check each fund’s current position sizes, company overlap, country exposure, index rules and the portfolio role the ETF will play. Memory-company weights change, so any Micron, SK hynix or Samsung Electronics percentage must come from a dated holdings file, not an old comparison table.

What these semiconductor ETFs actually diversify
A semiconductor ETF is a basket of businesses across the chip value chain. Depending on the index, it can include memory manufacturers, logic-chip designers, foundries, equipment suppliers, testing companies and other semiconductor-related firms. Buying one therefore spreads single-company risk, but it does not spread sector risk in the same way a broad-market fund would.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Memory chips are highly cyclical. Prices, inventory levels and capital spending can swing sharply as data-center, smartphone, personal-computer and industrial demand changes. A fund can reduce the damage from one memory company’s earnings disappointment while still falling when the entire semiconductor cycle weakens. VanEck describes this limitation directly: “A narrow industry focus concentrates risk in a few large names.”

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
The four funds below use different approaches to that problem. Their holding counts are useful starting points, but equal numbers of holdings do not guarantee equal diversification: one index may put most of its assets in a few large companies, while another may spread weight more evenly.
At-a-glance comparison

The figures are not all measured on the same date. XSD and SOXX holding counts come from March 31, 2026 factsheets; SMH’s fee and holdings reference comes from a page showing October 13, 2026 holdings data; PSI’s fee and methodology were current on October 19, 2026. Use the latest issuer files when making a purchase decision.
How each ETF is built
XSD: the breadth-oriented comparison point
XSD tracks the S&P Semiconductor Select Industry Index. State Street’s March 31, 2026 factsheet lists 44 holdings, the highest cited count in this comparison, and a 0.35% gross expense ratio. That broader roster makes XSD a natural starting point for investors whose first objective is reducing dependence on a small group of semiconductor companies.

If a handful of positions account for most assets, the additional names have a limited effect on portfolio volatility. Before buying, review XSD’s current weight distribution, identify any memory manufacturers, and compare the top positions with the rest of your portfolio. The index’s industry definition also matters: companies that supply chips or production equipment can react differently from memory producers, but they remain exposed to semiconductor capital-spending cycles.

SOXX: an established core semiconductor basket
SOXX tracks a U.S.-listed semiconductor equity index. iShares’ March 31, 2026 factsheet lists 30 holdings, while the current iShares page lists a 0.33% expense ratio. The official description says the fund invests across the semiconductor value chain, including companies benefiting from artificial-intelligence and digital-infrastructure capital investment.
For a core semiconductor allocation, SOXX combines a substantial roster with the lowest stated fee among these four funds. That does not make it automatically safer: the fund remains sector-concentrated, and a large position in one or two chip businesses can dominate results. Read the current prospectus and holdings file rather than assuming that its 30-stock count means a fixed level of memory exposure.
SMH: a focused large-company option
SMH tracks the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index. VanEck lists 0.35% total annual fund operating expenses and shows Micron Technology among the holdings on the page displaying October 13, 2026 holdings data.
With 25 holdings, SMH is more focused than XSD or SOXX by the cited counts. That focus can amplify returns when its largest companies lead the cycle, but it can also increase drawdowns when a dominant position or a common industry theme disappoints. The presence of Micron establishes that SMH has documented exposure to a memory producer; it does not establish Micron’s current percentage or prove that SMH has the highest memory exposure. Download the latest holdings file before drawing that conclusion.

PSI: a factor-driven alternative
PSI tracks the Dynamic Semiconductor Intellidex Index. Invesco says the index evaluates companies using “price momentum, earnings momentum, quality, management action, and value.” The fund is rebalanced and reconstituted quarterly and has a 0.55% total expense ratio.
PSI therefore differs from a simple broad industry basket. Its factor screen can change which companies and subsectors receive emphasis at each quarterly reconstitution. That may produce a different memory allocation from XSD, SOXX or SMH even when all four are rising together. It also means that a portfolio review from one quarter should not be treated as a permanent description of PSI.
Why holding count alone cannot measure memory risk
Use five separate tests when comparing these funds:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Position size: A fund with 44 holdings can still be dominated by its top five positions. Check each company’s percentage of net assets.
- Memory-company share: Add the current weights of Micron Technology, SK hynix, Samsung Electronics and any other company whose principal business is memory. Do not infer these percentages from a stale article.
- Company overlap: If you already own individual chip stocks or another semiconductor ETF, combine the exposures. Buying two funds with the same largest positions may add little diversification.
- Geography: U.S. listing does not mean every underlying business is U.S.-based. Review issuer domicile and revenue exposure, because semiconductor supply chains and policy risks cross borders.
- Index turnover: PSI’s quarterly reconstitution can change exposures faster than a ruleset with less frequent changes. Turnover can affect trading costs and taxable distributions in a taxable account.
How to check current memory exposure before investing
Follow this process on the issuer’s own fund page. Record the “as of” date beside every number.

- Open the latest holdings download. Use the current file for SOXX, SMH, PSI or XSD, not a search-result snippet or an undated third-party table.
- List direct memory producers. Search for Micron Technology, SK hynix, Samsung Electronics and other companies whose primary exposure is memory chips. Confirm the legal company name used in the file.
- Add their weights. Sum the net-asset percentages and write down the date. A one-day change in prices can alter the percentages even when the fund has not traded.
- Inspect the top ten positions. Note whether one memory company or one non-memory chip company dominates the fund. A low memory subtotal does not protect against concentration in another semiconductor segment.
- Compare overlap with your existing portfolio. Match ticker symbols and company names across funds and individual holdings. Count the combined percentage, not just the number of funds owned.
- Review country and business exposure. Separate designers, manufacturers, equipment makers and memory producers. This shows whether you are diversifying business models or simply accumulating one industry theme.
- Save the file and date. Recheck after a major index rebalance, an acquisition, or a large semiconductor price move. The conclusion is only valid for the snapshot you recorded.
If an issuer does not publish a harmonized current holding count or a clear memory-sector classification, state that limitation rather than manufacturing a comparison. PSI’s cited product page provides its methodology and fee, but the searched extract did not provide a comparable current holding count.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which fund fits which objective?
| Investor objective | Logical starting point | Reason | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximize the cited number of holdings | XSD | 44 holdings in the March 31, 2026 State Street factsheet | Top-position weights and current memory-company subtotal |
| Use a broad, established semiconductor core | SOXX | 30 holdings and a 0.33% expense ratio in cited iShares materials | Current overlap with other chip funds and individual stocks |
| Accept a tighter large-company basket | SMH | 25-stock MVIS index and documented Micron holding | Micron’s current weight and concentration in the largest positions |
| Prefer rules based on investment factors | PSI | Momentum, earnings momentum, quality, management action and value, with quarterly reconstitution | Latest rebalance, turnover and current memory exposure |
These are construction descriptions, not individualized recommendations. The right choice depends on how much semiconductor cyclicality you can tolerate and whether the ETF is a small satellite position or a major part of your equity allocation.
Fees: small percentages, recurring drag
Expense ratios are deducted from fund assets and reduce returns before taxes and trading costs. Using a simple $10,000 illustration, a 0.33% annual ratio equals about $33 for one year, 0.35% equals about $35, and 0.55% equals about $55, assuming the balance remains $10,000. Actual dollar costs change with the account value and the fund’s expenses.
Recommended Free Tools
| ETF | Stated annual expense | Approximate first-year cost on $10,000 |
|---|---|---|
| SOXX | 0.33% | $33 |
| SMH | 0.35% total annual fund operating expenses | $35 |
| XSD | 0.35% gross expense ratio | $35 |
| PSI | 0.55% total expense ratio | $55 |
The comparison is not a forecast of performance. Index methodology, concentration, turnover, tracking difference, spreads and taxes can matter more than a few basis points of fees. “Gross” and “total annual fund operating expenses” should be read exactly as the issuer presents them; check each current prospectus for waivers or changes.

Risks that remain after choosing a diversified basket
Semiconductor-cycle risk
All four products are sector funds. A broad roster of chip businesses can still decline together when inventories rise, demand falls or manufacturers cut capital spending. Diversifying within semiconductors is not the same as diversifying across sectors.
Large-company concentration
Market-capitalization or index rules can give a few large companies substantial influence. Review the top ten weights and the index’s capping rules. The SEC summary prospectus for SOXX advises investors to review the fund prospectus for more information about the fund and its risks; the same discipline is appropriate for every ETF.
Geopolitical and supply-chain exposure
Chip production depends on specialized facilities, equipment and cross-border supply chains. Export controls, tariffs, sanctions, earthquake disruption and changes in government incentives can affect several holdings at once. A U.S.-listed ETF does not remove those underlying risks.
Valuation and factor reversals
PSI’s momentum and earnings screens can favor companies after strong price moves. If momentum reverses, the factor exposure can hurt at the same time that the sector declines. Quarterly reconstitution does not guarantee timely protection; it is simply the fund’s stated rule for refreshing the portfolio.
Tax and account differences
Tax treatment depends on your country, account type, holding period and the fund’s distributions. The cited materials do not establish jurisdiction-specific tax outcomes. Ask a qualified tax professional before relying on an ETF for a tax strategy.
A practical selection checklist
- Define the purpose: broad semiconductor exposure, a satellite allocation or a hedge against an existing memory-stock position.
- Choose a maximum acceptable single-company weight and sector allocation before opening the holdings file.
- Compare the latest memory-company subtotal, not a historical table.
- Check overlap with every other ETF and individual stock you own.
- Compare fees using the current prospectus and note whether the figure is gross or total operating expenses.
- Read the index methodology for rebalancing frequency, eligibility and weighting rules.
- Confirm trading liquidity, bid-ask spreads and the availability of the fund in your jurisdiction through your broker.
- Set a review date. Reassess after each scheduled rebalance or when your overall portfolio changes materially.
Bottom line
XSD is the clearest breadth-oriented comparison because its cited 44 holdings exceed SOXX’s 30 and SMH’s 25. SOXX is a lower-fee, established 30-stock core option. SMH offers a more focused large-company basket with documented Micron exposure, while PSI is the factor-based alternative with quarterly reconstitution and the highest stated fee. To spread memory-chip risk responsibly, do not choose on holding count alone: download each fund’s current holdings, calculate the memory-company and overlapping-stock weights, and size the ETF according to your tolerance for the semiconductor sector’s shared cycles.
