Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBrave Search is the best free replacement for most people who want an independent index without search profiling. Choose DuckDuckGo for the easiest privacy switch with adjustable AI, Startpage for familiar results delivered through a privacy layer, Mojeek for link-first searching with an independent crawler, Kagi for a paid premium experience, or SearXNG if you want to self-host a configurable metasearch front end.
The right choice depends on four questions: who builds the index, whether searches are profiled, how much AI appears by default, and whether you prefer a free, paid, or self-managed service. The comparison below separates those trade-offs instead of treating every non-Google engine as interchangeable.

What Google AI Overviews are—and what you may be trying to change
Google AI Overviews are an AI summary feature integrated into Google Search. Instead of presenting only a ranked list of links, Google may place a generated answer above the results and provide supporting links. That can save time for a straightforward question, but it also changes the way you inspect evidence: the summary becomes the first thing you read, and the underlying pages may receive less attention.
People who search for an alternative usually want one or more of these changes:

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- More independence: results from an index that is not the same as Google’s.
- Less profiling: fewer identifying signals, less personalization, or no advertising profile built from searches.
- More control over AI: no generated answer, an opt-in summary, or a setting that can be reduced or disabled.
- A different business model: a paid service, a self-hosted project, or a free engine supported in another way.
No single service maximizes all four. A metasearch engine can hide your request from upstream providers while still sending it to them; an independent crawler can avoid Google’s index while having less coverage for some queries; a premium service can remove ads but still include its own AI features. Use the comparison criteria below before changing your default.

1. Brave Search: the strongest free independent-index choice
Why it stands out
Brave says Brave Search uses a fully independent index and does not profile users. That distinction matters if your main objection is dependence on Google’s crawler or on a results page shaped by a personal advertising profile. Brave also supports community-created ranking rules through Goggles. Goggles let an individual or a community create rules and filters that constrain the searchable space or alter result ordering, giving you a practical way to demote categories of sites without building a search engine.
Brave Search can be used in any browser and set as the default in most major browsers. Brave says downloads on or after October 19, 2021, may have Brave Search automatically set as the default in supported markets; check the installer choices if you do not want that change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow its AI features work
Brave integrated AI summaries into its search engine in 2023, according to Ofcom’s 2025 discussion paper. The current product has two distinct experiences:
- AI Answers: concise summaries with references.
- Ask Brave: longer answers, follow-up chat, and a Deep Research mode.
Those features make Brave a useful replacement for someone who wants an alternative index but does not mind optional AI assistance. They also mean Brave is not the right “no generated text anywhere” choice unless you avoid the AI controls. Brave documents an optional Google fallback that mixes Google results when its own index is judged insufficient. If complete independence from Google is your goal, review the settings and leave fallback mixing disabled.
Best fit and trade-offs
Choose Brave when independent indexing, privacy controls, and a free service matter more than reproducing Google’s exact result set. Keep Goggles in mind for specialized searches, such as reducing low-quality commercial pages or emphasizing a community-maintained source list. The trade-off is that turning on AI Answers or Google fallback changes the experience you selected Brave to provide, so treat both as deliberate options rather than invisible defaults.

2. DuckDuckGo: the easiest privacy-oriented switch
Why it is convenient
DuckDuckGo is designed as a familiar search box with privacy as the primary selling point. You do not need to learn a new query language, host a server, or pay a subscription. It is therefore the simplest recommendation for someone who wants to replace Google Search quickly while keeping an ordinary web-search workflow.
The important limitation is index dependence: Brave’s comparison information notes that DuckDuckGo relies on Bing’s search index. DuckDuckGo is privacy-oriented, but it is not an independent crawler and index in the same sense as Brave or Mojeek. If your reason for leaving Google is specifically to see a different independently collected web, choose one of those services instead.
Controlling AI features
DuckDuckGo’s AI controls are adjustable. A company statement reproduced by Tom’s Guide says its AI features are optional and can be turned off or tuned down from search and browser settings. That makes DuckDuckGo a practical middle ground: you can keep a conventional results page, try an AI-assisted answer when useful, and reduce the feature when you want to inspect links yourself.
Best fit and trade-offs
Pick DuckDuckGo when your priority is a low-friction privacy change rather than a new index. It is especially suitable for shared computers, family devices, or users who do not want to explain a new search interface. The trade-off is that privacy and index independence are separate properties; DuckDuckGo improves the former without providing the latter.
3. Startpage: familiar results with a privacy layer
How Startpage changes the experience
Startpage is aimed at people who want an ordinary search workflow while inserting a privacy layer between themselves and the search provider. Privacy Guides highlights Anonymous View, which attempts to standardize activity so that users are harder to identify when visiting result pages. The feature is a privacy aid, not a guarantee of full anonymity: browser fingerprints, accounts, network information, and activity outside the service can still identify a person.

That makes the result page feel closer to classic link-based search than an interface dominated by a generated response.

Using Anonymous View carefully
Anonymous View is most useful when you want an extra layer while opening a result, not when you need complete anonymity for every action online. Treat it as a compartment: it can mediate the visit launched from Startpage, but it does not anonymize other tabs, downloads, browser extensions, or accounts you use at the same time.
Best fit and trade-offs
Choose Startpage if you are comfortable with a familiar results style and want privacy mediation without learning a new system. It is a strong option for people who dislike prominent AI summaries but do not need an independent crawler. The trade-off is that privacy mediation and index ownership are different questions; Startpage’s value is the former and the conventional workflow, not a promise of a wholly separate web index.
4. Mojeek: an independent crawler that puts links first
Why its index matters
Mojeek maintains its own crawler rather than relying on Google or Bing, according to Tom’s Guide. That gives it a genuinely different index profile from services built mainly on another company’s results. Independent crawling also means that coverage and ranking can differ noticeably from the largest engines, which is useful when you want to discover pages that do not appear in the same order everywhere.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →AI defaults
Mojeek’s AI summaries are off by default. You can request a summary when you want one, but the initial interaction is a list of links that you can open and evaluate yourself. This design is valuable for research, fact-checking, and any query where the wording of a generated answer could conceal uncertainty.
Best fit and trade-offs
Select Mojeek when your first question is “Which pages should I inspect?” rather than “What answer can the engine generate for me?” Its independent crawl and link-first default directly address both Google-index dependence and forced summaries. The trade-off is that an independent engine may rank fewer familiar pages for some niche or highly local searches; keep another engine available when coverage is more important than index diversity.
5. Kagi: a paid, quality-focused search experience
What makes Kagi different
Kagi describes itself as a small premium service for people who value result quality, privacy, and speed. Its documentation says Kagi combines anonymized requests to traditional indexes with its own non-commercial Teclis index and its TinyGem news index. That is a blended model: it is neither a single independent crawler nor a simple proxy for one large provider.

Kagi also includes an AI for instant answers. If you want absolutely no generated answer, Kagi is therefore not the cleanest fit; if you want AI available without making an ad-supported free search engine your default, it may be attractive.

Cost and expectations
Kagi requires a paid subscription, but a current price is not established in the product information used for this guide. Confirm the present plan and any trial terms on Kagi’s own pricing page before subscribing. The subscription model is the central trade-off: you pay in exchange for a service designed around quality and privacy rather than relying on advertising as the primary user experience.
Best fit and trade-offs
Choose Kagi if you search heavily and are willing to pay for a cleaner, faster, ad-free-oriented workflow with more control. It is less suitable if your goal is specifically an independent crawler or an AI-free page, because its architecture combines several indexes and includes an AI answer feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. SearXNG: self-hosted metasearch for technical users
How metasearch differs from an independent index
SearXNG is an open-source, self-hostable metasearch engine. Instead of maintaining one web crawler, it sends a query to the upstream engines selected by the instance operator, gathers their responses, and presents a combined interface. The SearXNG server acts as a proxy between you and those providers, but the query still reaches the upstream services.
Self-hosting gives you control over deployment, logging policy, enabled engines, interface settings, and who can access the instance. It does not create a new independent web index. Your results remain bounded by the providers you configure, and an instance that enables many providers can still expose queries to all of them.
What you need to run it
- A server or computer that can run the SearXNG application continuously.
- Technical ability to install updates, protect the instance, and configure enabled engines.
- A decision about whether the instance is private for you or public for other users.
- A logging and retention policy that matches your privacy goals.
If you use a public SearXNG instance instead of operating your own, you are trusting its administrator with the request metadata visible to that server. Read the instance’s policy and avoid assuming that the software’s privacy properties automatically apply to every deployment.
Best Value
Best fit and trade-offs
Pick SearXNG when control and customization are more important than convenience. It is the best option here for technically capable readers who want to choose providers and run their own front end. It is not the best first replacement for someone who simply wants to change a browser’s default search engine in two minutes.
How to choose among the six options
| Your priority | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Independent index plus privacy at no subscription cost | Brave Search | Brave says its index is independent and that it does not profile users. |
| Simple privacy switch with adjustable AI | DuckDuckGo | It is familiar, free, and its AI features can be disabled or reduced. |
| Conventional results with privacy mediation | Startpage | Anonymous View adds a privacy layer and the results page does not lead with an AI summary. |
| Independent crawl and links before summaries | Mojeek | Its own crawler supplies a different index and AI summaries are off by default. |
| Premium, quality-focused search | Kagi | It combines several indexes and offers a paid experience with privacy and speed as goals. |
| Self-hosting and provider-level control | SearXNG | You choose the deployment and upstream engines, accepting the technical work involved. |
How to switch without losing your old workflow
- Choose one primary engine. Start with the option that matches your main reason for leaving Google. Do not judge six engines from one unusual query; use a small set of searches you perform every week.
- Set it as the browser default. In your browser’s Settings, open the Search or Address bar and search section, select the chosen engine, and remove any unwanted automatic default. The exact label differs among Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, and mobile browsers.
- Review AI and fallback settings before searching. In Brave, decide whether to use AI Answers, Ask Brave, and Google fallback mixing. In DuckDuckGo, turn AI features down or off if you want links first. In Mojeek, leave summaries unrequested when you want a link-only workflow.
- Test representative queries. Use one local query, one technical question, one breaking-news search, one shopping-free informational query, and one obscure topic. Compare the first page of links, not just the wording of any summary.
- Keep a second engine for edge cases. An alternative can be your daily default without being the only tool you ever use. If a local or specialized query performs poorly, try another independent index or a metasearch service rather than immediately returning to a personalized result page.
- Check privacy boundaries. Anonymous View, a proxy, or a no-profile policy does not hide activity from every website, your network administrator, logged-in accounts, or browser extensions. Treat search privacy as one layer of a larger setup.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing privacy with index independence
DuckDuckGo and Startpage can reduce direct tracking concerns while relying on conventional result sources or mediated results. Brave and Mojeek address index independence more directly. Decide which problem you are solving before interpreting a result difference as a privacy improvement.
Assuming “AI-free” means no AI exists
An engine may offer AI on request, include a separate chat mode, or use AI behind the scenes for ranking while keeping the visible page link-based. The practical question is whether a generated answer is placed in front of you and whether you can disable the feature. Brave, DuckDuckGo, Mojeek, and Kagi make different choices here.
Recommended Free Tools
Leaving fallback mixing enabled unintentionally
Brave documents Google fallback mixing for queries its own index cannot answer well. That option can improve coverage, but it conflicts with a strict goal of avoiding Google results. Check the setting instead of assuming that choosing Brave automatically excludes every Google response.
Treating Anonymous View as complete anonymity
Startpage’s Anonymous View attempts to standardize activity, but Privacy Guides warns that it should not be treated as full anonymity. Do not use it as a substitute for account separation, secure network practices, or careful browser configuration.
Using a public SearXNG instance without reading its policy
SearXNG’s source code and self-hosting model do not guarantee that every public instance has the same logging, rate limits, enabled engines, or administrative practices. If you do not operate the server, evaluate the operator’s policy and understand which upstream providers receive queries.
Expecting every alternative to match Google’s rankings
Different indexes and ranking rules produce different answers. That is the point of switching, but it can feel like a defect when a familiar page moves down or disappears. Evaluate whether the alternative helps you discover and verify information, not whether it reproduces one company’s ordering exactly.
Bottom line
For most readers, start with Brave Search if you want a free independent index and strong privacy controls. Use DuckDuckGo for the easiest adjustable-AI transition, Startpage for a familiar privacy-mediated workflow, Mojeek for an independent link-first crawl, Kagi if you are willing to pay for a premium search experience, and SearXNG if you want to operate and configure your own metasearch front end. The most reliable setup is often a primary engine plus a second option for searches where coverage, locality, or source diversity matters more than convenience.
