What kind of concealment is safest?
Use automatic redaction for common contact details
Snipping Tool’s Text actions can recognize text in an image and offer Quick Redact for detected email addresses and phone numbers. Microsoft states in its Snipping Tool support documentation that “All text recognition processes are performed locally on your device.” Automatic detection is convenient, but it does not cover every possible secret or guarantee that all relevant text was recognized.
Use blur or pixelation for less sensitive details
ShareX explicitly provides both blur and pixelation for manually selected areas. These can obscure details in casual screenshots, but they are not the best choice when information must be unrecoverable or impossible to recognize. A light effect may leave enough shape or context to identify what was hidden.

Crop out or opaque-mask high-sensitivity information
If a screenshot contains a password, access token, private account detail, or other highly sensitive content, exclude it from the image or cover it with a solid opaque fill. ShareX’s image-editor documentation advises: “For highly sensitive information, cropping it out of the screenshot is usually safer than only covering it visually.” This is a safer editorial recommendation than relying on blur alone.
How to redact and check a screenshot before sharing
- Capture only what is needed. Select a focused region rather than capturing a full screen with unrelated windows, account names, or notifications.
- Choose the concealment method to match the risk. Use Snipping Tool’s Quick Redact when it detects an email or phone number. In ShareX, select an area for blur or pixelation for lower-risk details; crop it away or use an opaque fill for highly sensitive content.
- Export a flattened copy and reopen it. Inspect the saved image, rather than assuming an edit has been applied permanently in an editable project.
- Zoom in and inspect the whole frame. Check the edges of each redaction, surrounding text, and secondary disclosures such as URLs, file paths, account names, or tokens. ShareX advises inspecting redacted edits before upload or sharing in its image-editor guidance.
- Share the reviewed output deliberately. Send the checked image, not an editable source or a cloud link with unintended access. If using ShareX upload features, confirm the selected destination and sharing settings first.
