First, check which GTA game and mode you’re playing
These steps focus on GTA V Story Mode and GTA Online, the modes with the clearest guidance for this question. GTA IV and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas use different wanted systems, so a tactic or interface option from GTA V may not apply to them. Confirm the game title and mode before following game-specific instructions.

In GTA V, the Xbox-hosted game help manual describes a wanted level as one to five stars indicating police interest. Stars do not necessarily vanish the moment you get out of view: escaping police sight starts a search or cooldown phase, and the time required depends on the wanted severity. The wanted-system details are summarized by the community-maintained GTA V wanted-level reference; treat it as a description of game behavior, not official support guidance.
How to lose the wanted level in GTA V Story Mode
- Stop committing crimes. Further offenses can keep police attention on you or bring it back after you start to escape.
- Break line of sight. Get away from police and out of their view; ducking behind a nearby object may not be enough if officers can still spot you.
- Leave the search area and wait. Watch the minimap or search indicators where available, and remain outside the area until the stars clear. Some areas may prevent the heat from clearing until you leave them.
If a normal escape stalls, use the environment as a way to break visibility. Rockstar’s GTA Online Starter Tips suggests Los Santos tunnels as an evasion route. GameSpot’s April 6, 2022 guide also describes hiding fully underwater or in an underground tunnel in GTA V. Underwater hiding depends on available oxygen and your ability to surface outside police vision; tunnels and other hiding places depend on the location and mission context. Neither method is guaranteed to work everywhere.

Why Lester may not remove your wanted level in GTA Online
Lester’s “Remove Wanted Level” option is a paid character service, not a universal reset button. Rockstar confirms the paid option in its starter tips. If the option is available, get some distance from police, stop committing crimes, call Lester, and select “Remove Wanted Level.”
The option can fail to solve the problem if you are near police or commit another crime just before or after using it. GameSpot’s April 6, 2022 guide also says Lester’s service is unavailable during most story missions and heists. GTA Online changes over time, so availability may depend on the activity you are in.

If the stars still won’t clear
- Confirm whether you are in Story Mode or GTA Online; Lester’s service is an Online option, not the standard Story Mode escape procedure.
- Check the mission objective and activity rules. A mission or heist may restrict services or affect what you can do to escape.
- Make sure police have actually lost sight of you and that you have left any area where wanted status cannot clear.
- Consider whether a new crime or nearby police renewed the pursuit after you thought you had escaped.
A persistent wanted level does not by itself establish that your game is bugged. The available guidance does not identify one universal glitch or one fix that applies to every save, activity, platform, and game version.
Why GTA IV and San Andreas may need different advice
Wanted mechanics differ across GTA entries. Community-maintained references document separate systems for GTA IV and San Andreas, as well as GTA V and GTA Online. If you are playing one of those older games, use guidance specific to that title rather than assuming GTA V’s search behavior or Lester option applies.
