Crimes that attract police attention can start a wanted level, while resisting or staying in the pursuit can escalate it. To escape, get out of the officers’ view, avoid being spotted again, and stay hidden until the stars disappear. Story mode and GTA Online have different rules and options, so treat them separately.
What raises your wanted level in GTA V?
Wanted stars represent how strongly law enforcement is responding. Actions that attract police attention can trigger a wanted level; continued resistance or pursuit can raise it. The exact response depends on the situation, and the available references do not establish a reliable crime-by-crime chart or exact thresholds.

In GTA Online, the rules and available options can differ from story mode, and an activity or game update may affect what is possible. Do not assume that a tactic or service works the same way in both modes.

How to lose the cops
- Stop driving into view of pursuing police. Continuing to pass officers can give them another chance to spot you.
- Break line of sight. Use streets, buildings, or terrain to get out of the officers’ view; these are situational possibilities, not guaranteed hiding mechanics.
- Stay hidden while the search continues. Avoid moving back into sight, and wait for the wanted stars to disappear.
There is no established universal countdown or guaranteed hiding place. The practical goal is to avoid reacquisition until the wanted state clears.

Does the advice differ in story mode and GTA Online?
Story mode
Breaking line of sight and remaining hidden are the broad escape principles. Exact pursuit timings and guaranteed routes are not established, so adapt to what the police can see rather than relying on a fixed timer or location.
GTA Online
Online has mode-specific behavior and options, and their availability can depend on the current activity or game update. Some secondary references describe ways to remove a wanted level immediately, but current availability, requirements, and restrictions are not established here. If considering such an option, check the in-game phone or menu and confirm that it applies to your current activity.

Can races have wanted levels?
Yes. Rockstar Games’ GTA Online — Race Creator guide describes an activity-specific setting: “Enabling Wanted Level allows the police to chase Race participants during the course.” This is a creator setting for races, not a general guarantee that every Online activity handles wanted levels the same way.
