Choose the capture scope to match what you need to show, then save the original image and record the page URL and capture circumstances alongside it.
Choose the evidence before choosing the tool
A screenshot records how a page appeared in a particular browser state; it does not, by itself, establish that the page is accessible, official, or unchanged at another time. Decide what the record needs to demonstrate before capturing.

- Visible viewport: Use this when the point concerns something visible on screen, such as a notice, label, or layout issue.
- Selected area or page element: Use this when a particular portion is relevant and the surrounding page is not. Keep enough context to make the selection understandable.
- Full page: Use this when the page’s overall layout or sequence of content matters. For a long or dynamic page, separate captures of important states may be clearer than one image that could imply it records interactions or hidden content.
Firefox Screenshots: a practical browser-native starting point
Mozilla documents Firefox Screenshots for selected areas or page elements, the visible portion, and the entire page. Its help page also describes copying or downloading the image and lists Ctrl+Shift+S for Windows/Linux and Command+Shift+S for macOS. Menu labels and shortcuts can change, so check the installed browser’s available commands. Mozilla’s Firefox Screenshots instructions were last updated September 2, 2026.

Note its full URL, including query parameters needed to reproduce the page.
- Open Firefox Screenshots using the browser command or documented shortcut. Choose the viewport, region or element, or full-page capture that fits the claim.
- Copy or download the result. Preserve the original image file; do not silently crop or annotate an image being used as evidence.
- In accompanying notes, record the capture date, browser and version, operating system, viewport dimensions, and relevant interaction state.
Firefox is a straightforward documented option, not a verified winner across browsers or all documentation needs. The available sources do not establish a cross-browser ranking or comparative accuracy.

When a screenshot is not the whole record
A PDF can provide a companion document when a printable record is useful. Firefox can print a page to PDF, but print presentation can differ from the on-screen page. Preserve a screenshot as well when the rendered appearance is material. See Mozilla’s Firefox printing instructions.
Saved webpage
A local webpage copy can be useful alongside the image, but it has different structural limits and may not preserve the original link structure completely. Treat it as a complementary record rather than a substitute for a screenshot when visual appearance matters. See Mozilla’s instructions for saving web pages.

Documenting an Indian government website or evaluating GIGW
The Guidelines for Indian Government Websites and apps (GIGW) are intended for government websites and apps at central, state, and local levels. Their objectives include usability, user-centricity, accessibility, and security. The GIGW portal showed “Last Updated: Oct 01, 2026”; that is the portal update date, not a publication date for every guideline section. GIGW portal
GIGW says, “The URL or the Web Address of any Government website is a strong indicator of its authenticity and status as being official.” Record the page’s full URL and capture date with the image. The URL is an indicator, not proof supplied by the screenshot that a site is official.

For accessibility, GIGW adopts criteria from WCAG 2.1 and describes evaluator use of manual checks and browser accessibility tools. A screenshot can show visual presentation, but it cannot establish accessibility conformance. Pair it with the relevant manual and browser-tool checks described in the GIGW guidance.

Troubleshooting the record
- The full-page image misses content or shows an incomplete state: Dynamic pages may change as you scroll or interact. Capture relevant states separately and note the interaction state rather than implying the image includes content that was not visible.
- The PDF looks different from the browser: Printing can change presentation. Keep the screenshot for visual appearance and use the PDF as a separate document.
- A saved copy does not behave like the live page: A saved webpage may not retain original link structure. Preserve the live URL in your notes and retain the screenshot.
- A reviewer cannot tell what was captured: Add the exact URL, date, browser/version, operating system, viewport dimensions, and relevant state in accompanying notes.
- The question is whether the page meets accessibility requirements: Do not treat a screenshot as a conformance test; use manual and suitable browser accessibility checks alongside visual documentation.
