First identify what is wrong: the capture target, the crop, or the output’s pixel density. Use fullPage: true for the full scrollable document, remove or correct an unintended clip rectangle, and choose scale: 'css' if device-pixel output is making the image dimensions larger than expected. These settings solve different problems, so changing scale will not reveal content outside the captured area.
Choose the screenshot area you actually need
With no fullPage option, page.screenshot() captures the viewport. To capture the full scrollable page, set fullPage: true. Playwright describes this as capturing the page as if it were displayed on a very tall screen. See the Playwright Screenshots guide.

The clip option sets an explicit capture rectangle with x, y, width, and height. A rectangle that is too short or narrow will cut off content even if the page itself is rendered correctly. Remove clip to use the normal target bounds, or adjust it when a fixed crop is intentional.

Confirm whether you are capturing an element or a page
An element screenshot is bounded by that element’s position and size, not the entire document. For a scrollable element, Playwright documents that the capture shows only its currently scrolled content. If you need the full document, take a page screenshot with fullPage: true; if you need a particular element, confirm its dimensions and scroll position first. See the Locator screenshot API.

Reduce unexpectedly large pixel dimensions
Screenshot scale changes raster output dimensions, not the part of the page captured. The API supports scale: 'css', which uses one output pixel per CSS pixel, and device scale, which uses device pixels. On high-DPI devices, device scale may result in an image with substantially more pixels than the CSS dimensions suggest.

Diagnose the problem in this order
- Decide between viewport and full document. Use the default page screenshot for the viewport; set
fullPage: truefor the full scrollable page. - Inspect the screenshot call for
clip. Check its origin and dimensions against the area you intend to capture. Remove it if no fixed crop is needed. - Check the target type. If the call is on an element or locator, verify that its bounds and current scroll position match the desired result. Use a page screenshot for the full document.
- Compare CSS and device scale. If the captured area is right but the file has unexpectedly large pixel dimensions, try
scale: 'css'. - Separate geometry from visual variability. If results differ between runs, inspect the page’s CSS and rendering state as well as the screenshot settings.
