Best Screenshot API for Full-Page Scrolling Captures

A practical guide to full-page screenshot APIs and browser automation, with documented scrolling strategies, Playwright code, troubleshooting, and selection criteria.

For full-page scrolling captures, ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try if you want a managed API with lazy-image loading and clear billing signals: it removes common consent banners, popups and chat widgets, and does not bill failed or non-clean captures. For a self-hosted option, Playwright exposes a full-page screenshot setting. ScreenshotOne and Urlbox document scroll-and-stitch or section-based approaches that can help when a single full-page render has layout problems. No independent benchmark in the available sources establishes one universal winner, so test representative pages from your own site.

How to choose an API for a full-page scrolling capture

A full-page screenshot is more than a taller viewport. Pages may load images or other content only as the browser scrolls, while sticky headers, animations, and very long or infinite-scroll layouts can affect the result. Compare tools against the pages you actually need to capture rather than relying on a provider’s description alone.

  • Completeness: Are content and lazy-loaded images present from top to bottom?
  • Layout: Do fixed or sticky elements appear in the right place, or are they duplicated or obscuring content?
  • Latency: How much time do scrolling, waits, and stitching add?
  • Controls: Can you adjust viewport, scroll behavior, waiting, or maximum height?
  • Operations: Do you want a managed API, or are you prepared to run and maintain browser automation?

These are practical evaluation criteria, not the results of a published comparative test. Capture a sample set that includes long pages, lazy-loaded images, sticky navigation, animation, and infinite scrolling before choosing.

ScreenshotNeo: managed API to try first

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts one GET request for a URL and can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For full-page captures, its feature set includes lazy-image loading. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off.

ScreenshotNeo reports capture outcomes in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Every feature is available on every plan.

Do-it-yourself: full-page capture with Playwright

Playwright’s Page API documents page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) to capture the full scrollable page rather than only the visible viewport. This is a browser-automation building block, not a managed screenshot service. The API reference establishes the setting; it does not establish comparative reliability, price, or operating effort.

npm install playwright
npx playwright install chromium

Save this as capture.mjs, then run node capture.mjs https://example.com. It saves a PNG of the full scrollable page. Replace the example URL with a page you are authorized to access.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';

const url = process.argv[2];
if (!url) throw new Error('Usage: node capture.mjs https://example.com');

const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
  await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 60000 });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

networkidle can be unsuitable for pages that keep network connections open. If navigation times out, choose a less strict readiness condition such as domcontentloaded, then wait for a page-specific selector or a suitable delay before capturing. A full-page screenshot setting alone does not guarantee that every scroll-triggered element has loaded; inspect the output and adapt waits or scrolling to the target page.

Hosted alternatives and their full-page strategies

ScreenshotOne: native full-height or section capture

ScreenshotOne’s full-page guide documents full_page=true as the basic request. Its default approach asks the browser to render the page at full height, which the provider says may rarely produce rendering issues. The alternative by_sections approach captures sections and combines them, and is intended for more complex pages and some animation-related cases. The provider cautions that reliability improvements can reduce performance.

ScreenshotOne’s options documentation says full_page=true automatically enables full_page_scroll=true unless overridden, to request lazy-loaded images and resources. You can configure scroll delay and scroll distance. The vendor suggests trying distances between 100 and 500 pixels on pages where smaller increments may trigger lazy loading; this is troubleshooting guidance, not a universal requirement. The by_sections algorithm scrolls automatically regardless of the full_page_scroll option. full_page_max_height can cap output height, including as a way to address infinite-scroll pages.

The provider’s getting-started guide covers setting up a request. Its full-page guide also offers a troubleshooting configuration that combines section capture, 500-pixel scroll steps, a 1,500-millisecond scroll delay, reduced motion, a five-second delay, and optional blocking of ads, trackers, cookie banners, chats, and heuristic banners. Treat these as adjustable example settings, not defaults or guaranteed fixes.

Urlbox: stitch or native mode

Urlbox’s screenshot documentation describes two full-page modes. Its default stitch mode scrolls the page, triggers animations and lazy-loaded elements, freezes fixed and sticky elements, detects full-height backgrounds, and combines sections. The native mode uses browser-native full-page screenshot functionality; Urlbox describes it as faster but potentially less reliable on some sites.

Urlbox says it scrolls to the bottom before capture by default to load lazy content and determine final scrollable height. Its skip_scroll option disables that step and may save time depending on page height. Disabling pre-scroll can also mean scroll-triggered content has not loaded, so verify the resulting image.

Choosing between native and stitched approaches

  • Try native full-page capture when speed matters and your test pages render correctly.
  • Try stitching or section capture when a single full-height render has layout problems or misses content.
  • Expect scrolling and combining sections to take longer than a simple capture in some cases.
  • Test sticky elements, backgrounds, animations, and lazy content separately; a strategy that works on one page may not work on another.

Tuning captures when content is missing or layout is wrong

  1. Confirm the page is ready. Wait for a meaningful selector or a page-specific signal instead of assuming navigation completion means all content has loaded.
  2. Trigger lazy loading. Enable the provider’s full-page scrolling behavior. If it exposes scroll distance and delay, adjust them; ScreenshotOne suggests testing 100–500 pixel distances for pages that need smaller steps.
  3. Adjust waits and viewport. Use dimensions that match the intended capture. Add a delay where content appears after navigation or scrolling.
  4. Try another capture algorithm. If native full-height rendering has artifacts, compare it with stitching or section-based capture. Inspect sticky headers and full-height backgrounds.
  5. Set a height limit for unbounded pages. Infinite-scroll content may continue to grow; a maximum height can make output manageable, but it means the capture is intentionally incomplete beyond that limit.
  6. Review animation behavior. Reduced motion may help, but it is best-effort: custom JavaScript animation, canvas, and animated images can still vary between captures.

Reliability, performance, and cost considerations

More scrolling, waiting, and section stitching can improve the chance of capturing content that appears only after interaction, but may increase capture time. Native full-page rendering may be quicker where it works. Measure latency and image completeness on representative pages; the available documentation does not provide a controlled head-to-head benchmark.

For a hosted API, compare the current plan limits and prices on its own pricing page before choosing. For self-hosted Playwright, account for the work of installing and operating a browser environment; the cited Page API does not state an operating cost or reliability comparison. ScreenshotNeo’s response headers make its billed status and page verdict inspectable, and its stated pricing is listed above.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to try
Images or sections are missing They load only when scrolled into view, or capture began too early. Enable pre-capture scrolling; wait for a selector or add a delay. Where supported, reduce the scroll increment and allow time between steps.
Sticky header appears in the wrong place or repeats The capture strategy handles fixed positioning differently from the live page. Compare native and stitched/section capture and inspect the entire output.
Capture takes too long Pre-scroll, long delays, section stitching, or a very tall page adds work. Reduce waits only after checking completeness, use a height limit for unbounded content, or test a native mode if available.
Infinite page never seems complete Scrolling triggers more content indefinitely. Set a maximum capture height or define a stopping condition appropriate to the task.
Animation differs between shots Reduced-motion handling cannot control every animation, canvas, or animated image. Test the exact page and timing; treat consistent animation frames as best-effort rather than guaranteed.
Playwright navigation times out The page may maintain network activity, so networkidle is never reached. Use domcontentloaded or another suitable readiness condition, then wait for a page-specific selector or delay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does full-page capture always include content loaded on scroll?

No. Enable or use a scroll-before-capture strategy and verify the output; page behavior and timing vary.

Is stitched capture always more accurate than native capture?

No. Providers document different trade-offs, and the available evidence does not establish a universal winner. Test both against your pages.
