Choose a satellite phone if you need live voice calls; choose a satellite messenger if two-way texts, location check-ins, and SOS are the priority. The Iridium 9555 is a voice-capable satellite handset, while Garmin inReach Messenger is built for messaging and SOS. Coverage, service requirements, sky visibility, and local restrictions matter as much as the device itself.
Satellite phone or satellite messenger: which do you need?
These devices solve different problems. Iridium describes its satellite phones as supporting voice, messaging, data, and SOS. Garmin describes inReach devices as providing two-way satellite messaging and SOS; selected inReach Plus devices can also exchange voice messages and photos through the paired Messenger app. That app feature is not the same as making a live voice call on a satellite phone.

Check coverage for every stop, not just the product label
A broad “global coverage” claim is not a substitute for confirming that the service works in the countries and regions on your route. Garmin says handheld inReach devices use Iridium, and its support material describes Iridium coverage as global. Garmin also directs customers to check accessible services by area or destination because services vary by device. Garmin coverage guidance

Plan for sky visibility and service access
Keep a clear view of the sky
Satellite devices need a clear sky view to transmit. Garmin warns that terrain, buildings, trees, and other obstructions can interfere; in a canyon with very limited sky visibility, reception may be extremely poor or impossible. Garmin satellite-use guidance
