There is no permanently best Rust seed. The right choice is a seed paired with a world size that matches your active population, wipe schedule and desired travel pace. For most communities, start with several seed-and-size combinations, preview them in RustMaps, and choose the layout with the most useful monument access, road network, biome balance and travel distances. Around 3,000 is a sensible starting size for roughly 50 players, 3,500 for about 100, and 4,000–4,500 for more than 150; these are operating estimates rather than official limits.
This guide explains how procedural seeds work, how to select and preview candidates before a wipe, when to use a custom map, and how to avoid the configuration mistakes that create an unwanted world reset.

A Rust seed is not good or bad in isolation. It becomes suitable only when its generated terrain is matched to the server’s population and rules. A layout that creates exciting encounters for 50 active players can feel empty with 15, while the same map may be cramped and frustrating with 200.
Evaluate a candidate as a seed-plus-world-size pair. The seed controls the deterministic arrangement generated by Rust; world size controls the area in which that arrangement exists. Looking at the seed number alone tells you almost nothing about the resulting island.

For a normal procedural server, compare candidates on these practical questions:
- Are useful monuments distributed across the map, or are most high-value locations concentrated in one region?
- Can players reach a safe zone and important monuments without making every trip a long cross-map journey?
- Do roads, rivers and coastlines create several viable travel routes?
- Are forests, deserts, snow and other biomes available in proportions that fit your server’s progression style?
- Does the distance from likely spawn areas to early resources support the pace of your wipe?
- Will the amount of empty terrain be appropriate for the number of players expected to be online?
No published source establishes a universal numerical ranking of seeds. A map with a spectacular coastline may be a poor choice if your players need compact monument access, and a dense monument layout may be unsuitable for a slower roleplay wipe. Treat the map preview and your server’s objectives as the decision criteria.
How procedural Rust maps are generated
Rust procedural generation is deterministic from two settings: server.seed and server.worldsize. When both values are identical, the server recreates the same generated layout. Change either value and Rust generates a different world.
The documented ranges cited by 2026 hosting guidance are:
| Setting | Range | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
server.seed |
0–2,147,483,647 | The deterministic terrain and feature arrangement within the selected size |
server.worldsize |
1,000–6,000 | The overall playable map dimensions and the amount of terrain generated |
The same pair should be treated as a map identity. Record it in your wipe notes and in any deployment checklist. If you later restore those exact values, you can recreate the same procedural layout, but ordinary bases, inventories and other world state do not automatically return after a wipe.
Choose world size before choosing a seed
World size is primarily a population and pacing decision, not a quality score. A larger map offers more room and can reduce competition for building sites, but it also spreads players farther apart, increases travel time and can require more server resources. A small map produces more encounters and shorter journeys, but may become congested as the population rises.

| Approximate active population | Practical starting size | Why it fits | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small community or fewer than about 50 players | 2,000–3,000 | Compresses travel and makes encounters, trading and monument access more frequent | Choose the lower end only if your rules and building density can tolerate tighter space |
| About 50 players | 3,000 | Hosting guidance places this around the capacity of a modest active server | An operational estimate, not an official player limit |
| About 100 players | 3,500 | Provides a middle-ground area without making every trip cross-map | Actual feel depends on wipe frequency, team sizes and online peaks |
| More than 150 players | 4,000–4,500 | Adds building and resource space for a busier population | Check hardware and monitor whether the additional distance reduces encounters |
| Very large or roleplay-focused server | 5,000–6,000 | Leaves room for larger communities, districts and long-distance travel | A huge map with a low population can feel deserted and consume more resources |
RespawnHost’s 2026 guidance associates 3,000 with up to roughly 50 players, 3,500 with about 100, 4,000–4,500 with 150 or more, and 5,000–6,000 with very large or roleplay servers. XGamingServer describes 3,500 as a balanced baseline. These figures are practical hosting estimates, not guarantees from Facepunch and not a substitute for monitoring your own server.
When a smaller map is the better choice
Use the 2,000–3,000 range when your community is small, when players prefer frequent contact, or when a wipe is intended to move quickly from starter bases to contested monuments. Shorter routes make solo and small-team play more viable because players spend less time travelling through empty terrain.
The trade-off is limited expansion room. Large clans may claim strategic locations quickly, and a crowded map can make resource routes predictable. If your rules permit large groups or high building density, preview several maps at the same size rather than assuming that any 2,000 map will play identically.
Why 3,500 is a useful middle baseline
A 3,500 world gives a roughly 100-player server more breathing room than a compact map while preserving a reasonable chance of encounters. It is a useful first test for a general-purpose weekly or monthly wipe, not a mandatory setting. If your peak online count is much lower than your community size, start smaller; if players routinely report long empty journeys, reduce the size at the next wipe.

When 4,000 and larger make sense
Move toward 4,000–4,500 when more than 150 players are active and building locations are regularly exhausted. Consider 5,000–6,000 only when the server is genuinely large or when spacious districts and long-distance travel are central to the experience. On a lightly populated server, those same dimensions can separate players so far that the map feels inactive even when the server is technically online.
How to compare candidate seeds in RustMaps
Guessing from a seed number is inefficient. RustMaps can generate and display the procedural map produced by a selected seed and world size, including monuments, roads, biomes and other map features. Its filters let you narrow candidates before you commit to a wipe.

- Set the population target. Decide the expected active and peak player counts, then select a starting world-size range. Use the table above as an initial operating estimate.
- Open the map generator. In RustMaps, enter a candidate seed and the exact world size you are considering. A seed preview without the matching size is not a valid comparison because changing the size changes the generated world.
- Generate several candidates. Record each seed and size together. Comparing only screenshots or seed numbers makes it easy to lose the pair that produced a layout you liked.
- Apply filters that reflect your rules. Look for the monument types, safe zones, roads, rivers, coastlines and biome coverage your server needs. Filters are useful for finding candidates; they do not replace inspecting the complete map.
- Inspect the travel pattern. Check whether early resource areas connect naturally to roads or coastlines, whether high-value monuments are reachable from multiple directions, and whether the map creates the amount of travel time your wipe format expects.
- Check geographic balance. Look for a playable distribution rather than a single “perfect” cluster. A map with useful options in several regions gives players reasons to build and travel beyond the first convenient monument.
- Save the final pair. Copy the chosen seed and world size exactly into your server change log and deployment notes. Include the intended wipe date so staff do not accidentally combine a new size with an old seed.
What to inspect on the preview
Monument coverage and spacing
Count and locate the monuments that matter to your progression rules. A high-value monument next to a safe zone can create a powerful early-game route; several high-value locations isolated in one corner can produce a single dominant region. Look for multiple viable routes so that one team cannot control every important objective simply by settling near the map’s central cluster.
Safe zones and access to high-value locations
Safe zones influence trading, recovery and the way new players enter the economy. Examine their distance from likely building areas and from contested monuments. Extremely convenient access can accelerate progression; extremely remote access can make the feature irrelevant for casual players. The right distance depends on whether your server emphasizes conflict, cooperation or roleplay.

Roads, rivers and coastlines
Continuous roads and navigable-looking coastlines create alternatives to a single direct route. Rivers and shorelines can also shape where players build and how they move between biomes. Check for abrupt dead ends or long stretches with no useful destination, particularly on larger maps where an inefficient route can add substantial travel time.
Biome balance and resource routes
Biomes affect early gathering, building choices and the visual identity of a wipe. Confirm that the map offers practical routes from spawn areas to the resources your progression system expects. A visually varied map is not automatically balanced if one biome contains most convenient building sites or if essential resources require repeated cross-map trips.
Travel time and encounter density
Travel is part of the server’s pacing. A compact map can make encounters common and shorten recovery after a raid; a larger map can support privacy, long-distance trade and regional identities. Use the preview to estimate whether players will meet naturally or spend most of a session travelling alone. There is no single correct distance, only a distance that fits your stated wipe goals.
Applying the selected seed and size safely
After choosing a pair, set both values in the server configuration used by your host or startup process:

- Start the server and verify that the generated map corresponds to the selected pair.
- Have an administrator inspect spawn areas, monument access and key routes before advertising the wipe as final.
Changing either setting creates a new generated world and therefore constitutes a map wipe. Player bases, inventories and map state from the previous generated world do not carry over as if nothing changed. Communicate the reset clearly, preserve backups according to your retention policy, and do not promise continuity when the seed or size has been altered.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Seed changes, size changes and wipe planning
A seed change is not a cosmetic refresh. It creates a different terrain arrangement. A world-size change also regenerates the map, even if you keep the same seed number. Plan both as wipe decisions.
For a predictable announcement, publish the target world size, seed policy and wipe time together. If you want a fresh layout every cycle, generate and preview a new pair before the announcement. If you want players to learn a map over multiple cycles, retain the pair and change only the world-state elements your server rules allow; do not change the size accidentally while attempting to preserve the terrain.
When to use a custom map instead
Procedural generation is the simplest option when you want a naturally varied island and are comfortable choosing among generated layouts. It cannot reliably guarantee a deliberately authored landmark arrangement, exact monument placement or a purpose-built event arena.
Facepunch supports loading a custom map through the levelurl startup parameter. Its official description explains that, instead of using level, seed and size parameters to load a static map or generate a procedural one, a server can provide a link to a custom map file with levelurl.
Choose a custom map when you need
- An event arena with intentionally placed objectives
- Roleplay districts, roads or landmarks designed around a story
- Specific monument positions that procedural generation cannot guarantee
- A repeatable layout for tournaments, tutorials or scripted scenarios
Stay procedural when you value
- Fast setup with no custom asset pipeline
- Natural variation between wipes
- Standard generated terrain and features
- A map that can be previewed by changing only seed and size
A custom map adds an asset to manage and a dependency on the file being available at startup. Test the file on a staging instance, confirm that the levelurl points to the intended map, and document the map version before a public wipe. Do not switch to a custom map merely because one procedural preview is disappointing; first compare several seed-and-size pairs.
Best Value
Recommendations by server size
Up to about 50 active players
Begin around world size 3,000, or test 2,000–2,500 if your community prioritizes frequent encounters and short recovery trips. During preview, emphasize monument variety within a compact area, several nearby building regions and routes that do not force every player through one chokepoint.
About 100 active players
Use 3,500 as the first candidate size. Compare layouts for regional balance and multiple high-value routes so that the map can support several groups without making the edge regions irrelevant. If your actual peak population is closer to 50, a 3,000 map may produce a livelier experience; if large clans dominate, a slightly larger size can reduce immediate congestion.
About 200 active players
A 4,000–4,500 starting range is more appropriate for a genuinely busy server. Inspect travel distances carefully: adding terrain does not automatically add meaningful play space if most useful monuments remain concentrated. If the server is roleplay-oriented and maintains high activity, test up to 5,000–6,000, but verify that the community can populate the expanded area.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing a seed without recording the size
Symptom: The map in the server does not match the preview. Cause: The same seed was entered with a different world size. Fix: Treat the two values as one pair and copy both from the saved preview record.
Using a huge map for a small community
Symptom: Players report long empty journeys and few encounters. Cause: The map area exceeds the population’s ability to occupy it. Fix: Move toward 2,000–3,000 at the next planned wipe and preview layouts with shorter routes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Using a tiny map for a large population
Symptom: Building locations disappear quickly and key monuments become permanently contested. Cause: Too many players are competing for too little terrain. Fix: Test 3,500, 4,000 or 4,500 depending on active numbers, then compare whether the additional space improves access without making the map feel empty.
Changing values during an active wipe
Symptom: Players return to a regenerated world unexpectedly. Cause: A seed or size edit was applied outside the announced wipe process. Fix: lock configuration changes to a scheduled maintenance window, announce the reset, and restore the documented pair if an accidental edit occurred.
Assuming a preview remains accurate forever
Symptom: A previously attractive layout behaves differently after a major game update. Cause: Facepunch continues to add monuments and procedural features, which can affect generated maps. Fix: Recheck the candidate in RustMaps after major updates before reusing it for a new wipe.
A repeatable pre-wipe checklist
- Estimate active, peak and expected post-wipe populations.
- Select a world-size range that matches those numbers and your desired encounter rate.
- Generate multiple seed-and-size pairs in RustMaps.
- Check monuments, safe zones, roads, rivers, coastlines, biomes and early resource routes.
- Inspect whether travel distances fit the wipe length and server rules.
- Record the exact seed and size together, with the intended wipe date.
- Back up the current configuration and announce that changing either value creates a new world.
- Apply both values at the scheduled restart.
- Verify the generated map in-game before opening the server to the public.
- Repeat the preview after major Rust updates.
Bottom line for 2026
Start with population, not with a supposedly lucky number. A 3,000 world is a practical test for about 50 players, 3,500 is a balanced first trial near 100, and 4,000–4,500 is a better starting range above 150; 5,000–6,000 is reserved for genuinely large or roleplay-focused communities. Preview several complete seed-and-size pairs in RustMaps, select the one whose geography supports your rules, and apply both values together at the planned wipe. Use levelurl and a custom map only when you need authored control that procedural generation cannot reliably provide.
