How to Set Up a Valhelsia 3 Minecraft Server (Forge 1.16.5)

A complete Valhelsia 3 server setup guide covering Java 8, memory, the official Server Pack, EULA and properties configuration, internet access, chunk pre-generation, troubleshooting and safe updates.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run a Valhelsia 3 server, install 64-bit Java 8, download the matching Valhelsia 3 Server Pack, start the supplied Forge scripts, accept the Minecraft EULA, configure server.properties, and forward the server port if friends will connect over the internet. Valhelsia 3 targets Minecraft 1.16.5, so every player must install the same Valhelsia 3 release and its corresponding Forge files.

The latest server-pack release listed for Valhelsia 3 is 3.5.1 – SERVER, dated March 21, 2022. Earlier 1.16.x releases remain available, so choose one release deliberately and keep the server and all clients on it.

What you need before installing

Valhelsia 3 is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.16.5. It is not interchangeable with a vanilla server, a different Valhelsia generation, or another 1.16.x pack release. A client that uses a different pack version, Minecraft version, or Forge generation will normally fail to connect or will produce missing-mod errors.

  • A 64-bit operating system and Java 8: use a Temurin 8 (Java 8) runtime. The official Valhelsia guidance identifies 64-bit Java as mandatory and warns that 32-bit or the wrong Java version is a common startup failure.
  • Memory: allocate at least 4 GB to the server. The guide describes 4–8 GB as the usual range and recommends at least 4 GB for roughly five to seven players in its hosting example. This is configuration guidance, not a performance guarantee.
  • Storage: leave room for a growing world, backups, logs, mods, and generated chunks. No official minimum disk figure is published.
  • A separate machine when possible: running the server on the same computer used to play can leave too little CPU, memory, or disk bandwidth for either task.
  • Network access: a stable wired connection is preferable for a home host. Internet players also require router port forwarding and a firewall rule.

Client memory is separate from server memory

CurseForge lists 4 GB as the pack’s minimum allocated client RAM and 5–6 GB as the normal recommendation. Client needs can rise to 6–8 GB with OptiFine, a high render distance, higher video settings, HD resource packs, or shaders. Those figures apply to the game client; do not subtract them from the server allocation when sizing one computer for both jobs.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?

Both approaches run the same Forge server pack. The difference is who maintains the machine and network.

Consideration Self-hosted machine Managed server
Control and customization Full access to files, Java arguments, backups, and operating-system settings. Usually provides a control panel and file access, but operating-system control is limited.
Setup effort You install Java and the pack, configure the firewall, and maintain the server. The provider usually provisions Java and the instance; you still configure the pack and players.
Network administration You must handle a local IP address, router forwarding, and firewall rules. The provider supplies a public address; home-router configuration is normally unnecessary.
Backups and updates Your responsibility unless you build an automated process. Tools may be supplied, but confirm what is included and how long backups are retained.
Cost pattern No separate hosting bill, but you provide hardware, electricity, storage, and your internet connection. A recurring charge; current pricing and resource limits depend on the provider and plan.
Support You diagnose Java, Forge, mod, and network problems yourself. Support can help with the platform, while modpack-specific issues may remain yours.

The official Valhelsia server guide names BisectHosting as a recommended option for easier hosting and describes at least 4 GB for five to seven players. Treat that as the pack author’s hosting guidance, not an independent performance comparison, and verify any offer or regional terms before purchasing.

Download the correct Valhelsia 3 server pack

  1. Open the Valhelsia 3 project on CurseForge and select the Files tab.
  2. In Additional Files, locate the Server Pack for the release you intend to run. For the newest listed release, that is Valhelsia 3 – 3.5.1 – SERVER.
  3. Download that archive, not merely the client instance installed by a launcher.
  4. Create a dedicated folder such as Valhelsia3-server on the server machine. Give your account write permission to it.
  5. Extract the entire server-pack archive into that folder. Preserve its supplied scripts, libraries, mods, configuration folders, and Forge files.

Copying only a player’s client folder is an unreliable substitute: the server pack contains the launch scripts and server-side files needed to bootstrap Forge.

Install 64-bit Java 8

Valhelsia 3 is a Minecraft 1.16.5 pack, so follow the Java 8 branch of the Valhelsia instructions. Install a 64-bit Temurin 8 LTS build on Windows or macOS through Adoptium. On Linux, the documented package commands are:

sudo apt-get install openjdk-8-jre

For Fedora, RHEL, or CentOS, the guide gives:

su -c "yum install java-1.8.0-openjdk"

After installation, check the runtime before starting the pack:

java -version

The output should identify Java 8 and a 64-bit runtime. If several Java versions are installed, make the server script call the Java 8 executable explicitly or adjust the system path so the script does not select a newer runtime.

Set the server’s memory allocation

The supplied start scripts use a minimum allocation by default. Open the script in a text editor and find its Java memory arguments, commonly represented by -Xms (initial memory) and -Xmx (maximum memory). Set the maximum to at least 4 GB, provided the machine has additional memory for the operating system and any game client.

For example, an allocation may be expressed as -Xms4G -Xmx4G. Do not copy that line blindly if the supplied script uses a different format; change the existing values while preserving the rest of the command. Increase memory only when the host has headroom. Giving Java nearly all physical RAM can make the operating system swap and worsen lag.

  • Start at 4 GB for a small group and monitor behavior.
  • Consider 6–8 GB when more players, exploration, or large automated builds keep many chunks loaded.
  • Client RAM and server RAM are separate allocations; a single computer running both needs enough total physical memory for both.

Run the server and accept the EULA

  1. On Windows, double-click ServerStart.bat. On Linux or macOS, execute ServerStart.sh. If required on Unix-like systems, make the script executable with chmod +x ServerStart.sh and run it from the server directory.
  2. The first launch normally stops after creating eula.txt. This is expected.
  3. Open eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, and change eula=false to eula=true only if you agree to it.
  4. Save the file and start the same script again. Forge will generate the remaining server files, including server.properties, world data, logs, and configuration directories.

Do not launch the script from another working directory. Relative paths in Forge and mod files expect the script to run inside the extracted server folder.

Configure server.properties

World type

For the Quark Realistic World Type documented by Valhelsia, set:

level-type=realistic

World-generation settings are applied when a world is created. If you changed this value after the world already exists, stop the server and remove the existing world folder before the next final restart. Deleting the folder permanently removes that world, so copy it to a backup location first.

Allow modded flight

The official guide recommends changing:

allow-flight=true

This setting prevents the vanilla server’s anti-flight check from kicking players whose mods provide legitimate flight or movement mechanics. It does not grant every player a permission to fly; mod and gameplay rules still apply.

Whitelist and operator permissions

If you enable the whitelist, add each trusted player from the server console or in-game with:

Let friends connect over the internet

  1. Give the server machine a stable local address, preferably through a DHCP reservation in the router, so forwarding does not break after a reboot.
  2. In the router’s port-forwarding page, forward the Minecraft server port shown in server.properties (the default is commonly 25565) from the public interface to the server machine’s local address. Use the protocol requested by your router; Minecraft Java traffic normally uses TCP, and some setups also enable UDP.
  3. Allow the Java server through the host firewall. Create an inbound rule for the same port and the Java executable used by the script.
  4. Have a player outside your home network connect using your public IP address and port, or a DNS name that points to it. Players on the same LAN should use the server’s local address.
  5. If it fails, test from a genuinely external connection, such as a phone hotspot. Many routers do not support testing their public address from inside the same LAN.

Router menus differ by manufacturer, so use the router’s own documentation for the exact fields. Port forwarding exposes a service to the internet; keep the pack updated, use a whitelist for a private group, and avoid giving operator privileges casually.

Install the matching client for every player

Players can use supported launchers such as CurseForge, GDLauncher, or ATLauncher. Select the exact Valhelsia 3 release installed on the server, not simply “latest.” The launcher must install Minecraft 1.16.5 and the matching Forge/mod files.

Third-party launchers may require manual downloads. Launchers that permit playing without purchasing Minecraft are unsupported. Each player should use a legally purchased Minecraft account and sign in through the launcher.

If a player receives a missing-mod, mismatched-version, or registry error, compare the complete release identifier and not just the words “Valhelsia 3.” A server on 3.5.1 cannot be assumed compatible with an earlier 3.x client.

Reduce first-exploration lag with chunk pre-generation

Large modpacks can generate terrain slowly when several players explore new areas simultaneously. The Valhelsia guide recommends pre-generating chunks before inviting everyone to explore. Run these commands from the server console or as an administrator, and wait for each operation to finish:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
/forge generate 0 0 0 100000 minecraft:overworld

Use the equivalent Forge generation commands for the Nether and End dimensions as documented for your server release. The example radius is an administrative choice, not a required setting. A larger area takes more time and disk space, so choose a boundary that matches where your group is likely to play. Back up the world before a large generation job and avoid stopping the process abruptly.

Diagnose lag and startup failures

The script closes immediately

  • Run the script from a terminal so the error remains visible.
  • Confirm that java -version reports 64-bit Java 8.
  • Check that the script is in the extracted server directory and that all supplied files were unpacked.
  • Verify that the memory setting does not exceed available physical RAM.

Players cannot connect

  • Confirm the server is fully started and listening before testing.
  • Check that the client release, Minecraft version, and Forge generation exactly match.
  • For internet players, verify the local address, router forwarding rule, public address, and host firewall.
  • Test from outside the home network and check the server log for the incoming connection attempt.

The server lags during exploration

First confirm that the pack is current and that the Java maximum memory is appropriate. Use Minecraft’s debug profiler or the Spark mod to identify whether ticks, CPU, memory, or disk activity is the bottleneck. Pre-generate a reasonable area after taking a backup. Adding memory will not fix a CPU- or disk-bound server automatically.

Players are kicked for flying

On a stopped server, check that allow-flight=true is saved in server.properties. Restart after editing and confirm that the relevant movement mod is installed on both server and client.

Update Valhelsia 3 without losing the world

Do not overwrite a running installation casually. Use this sequence for a release change:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read the new release changelog and confirm that your clients can move to the same release.
  2. Announce downtime and stop the server cleanly with:
/stop
  1. Make a complete backup of the server directory, especially the world folders, server.properties, whitelist, and operator data. Keep the backup outside the live directory.
  2. Download the replacement Valhelsia 3 server pack for the target release.
  3. Following the official procedure, remove the old config, defaultconfigs, libraries, openloader, mods, kubejs, and scripts folders when they are present, and remove the old Forge jar.
  4. Copy the new server-pack contents into the server directory.
  5. Restore deliberate customizations—such as your world folders, server.properties, whitelist, and carefully reviewed scripts—from the backup. Do not blindly restore old mod or configuration files when the changelog indicates they changed.
  6. Start the server and watch the console and logs for missing dependencies, removed settings, or world-conversion messages before allowing players back in.

Folder names vary by release. Delete only the items covered by the documented update procedure inside this server directory; never use a broad cleanup command against the parent disk.

Final launch checklist

  • Server and every client use the same Valhelsia 3 release, Minecraft 1.16.5, and Forge generation.
  • Java is a 64-bit Temurin 8 or equivalent Java 8 runtime.
  • The dedicated Server Pack—not a copied client instance—was extracted.
  • The server has at least 4 GB allocated and enough unallocated memory for the operating system.
  • The EULA was accepted in eula.txt.
  • allow-flight=true is set for the modded server, and level-type=realistic is set only when that world type is intended.
  • World-generation changes were made before creating the world, or the old world was backed up and removed deliberately.
  • The host firewall and router forwarding rule permit the configured port.
  • Whitelist and operator permissions contain only the players who need them.
  • A tested backup exists before updates or large chunk-generation jobs.

The Bottom Line

A reliable Valhelsia 3 server comes from matching versions, 64-bit Java 8, a dedicated Server Pack, at least 4 GB of server memory, and disciplined network and backup configuration. Complete those in that order, then tune generation and performance only after the basic Forge server starts cleanly.
