Best Retro Handhelds for Super Mario 64 and Fan-Made Demakes

Best overall: Anbernic RG Cube. It combines Android, a genuine analog stick and enough performance for dependable Super Mario 64 emulation without moving into the most expensive class. Choose the Retroid Pocket 5 when you want more headroom for demanding N64 games and homebrew. Choose an R36H-class handheld only if Super Mario 64 is your main target and your budget is below about $50.

Quick recommendations

Handheld Best for N64 outlook Price information
Anbernic RG Cube Most players and mixed N64 libraries Capable choice for difficult N64 emulation; Android software and controls are practical for emulator tuning Current price and stock should be verified; a current figure was not established
Retroid Pocket 5 Higher performance headroom, demanding N64 games and homebrew More expensive option with room for tougher titles; exact game results still depend on emulator settings Current listing and price should be verified
R36H-class handheld Lowest-cost Super Mario 64 setup Can handle Super Mario 64, but Expansion Pak games and demanding titles such as Perfect Dark or GoldenEye can suffer Typically under $50, according to GamesRadar’s guide
Anbernic RG35XX H Low-cost Linux handheld with acceptable N64 support Rated “good” for N64; heavy games need tuning $60 reference price in RetroHandheldHQ’s 2026 comparison; not a guaranteed current retail price

N64 is a much harder emulation target than 8-bit and 16-bit consoles. The console’s rendering pipeline needs more capable graphics plugins, which is why very cheap handhelds often run older systems well but struggle with N64. A real analog stick is equally important: Super Mario 64 was designed around continuous analog movement, not eight-way digital input.

What a handheld needs for Super Mario 64

Use the following as a practical floor rather than a guarantee. GamesRadar’s N64 selection guide lists a display of at least 640×480, Windows, Android or Linux, one thumb stick, a d-pad, four face buttons, L and R bumpers, L and R triggers, a quad-core ARM Cortex-A55 or better processor, at least 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Analog control: One physical thumb stick is essential for Mario’s walking, running and variable-speed movement. A d-pad-only device is a poor fit even when its emulator technically launches the game.
  • Graphics headroom: N64 emulation relies on GPU plugins and renderer compatibility. A faster CPU alone does not guarantee a clean picture or stable frame pacing.
  • Memory and storage: The 3GB RAM and 32GB storage figures leave room for the operating system, emulator, saves and several legally obtained game files. They are baseline criteria, not performance ratings.
  • Screen: 640×480 is the documented resolution for one Super Mario 64 profile, but a higher-resolution panel can make menus and texture-enhanced builds easier to view. It cannot compensate for weak emulation hardware.
  • Controls: Two shoulder layers are useful for N64 games that map functions to both bumpers and triggers. Check the physical layout before buying; button labels and placement vary between handhelds.

Why N64 separates cheap handhelds from better ones

RetroHandheldHQ founder Retro Drifter describes N64 as “the system that separates the $35 handhelds from the $70 ones.” The distinction is practical: older 8-bit and 16-bit consoles generally need modest CPU and GPU resources, while N64 emulation must reproduce a more complicated 3D pipeline through software plugins.

  • 【Portable Pocket Retro Game Console】 This compact retro game console is designed for mobile gaming and features a powerful 4000mAh rechargeable battery for up to 6 hours of continuous gaming. The lightweight design fits easily into a pocket or bag, and the built-in stereo speakers and 3.5mm headphone jack provide flexible audio options for both private and shared gaming experiences.

That extra work creates several failure modes. A game may boot but show missing textures, inaccurate effects, audio timing problems or uneven frame pacing. One title can run acceptably while another fails because each game uses the hardware differently. Expansion Pak software and especially demanding games such as Perfect Dark and GoldenEye put more pressure on low-cost devices than Super Mario 64 does.

On Linux, RetroHandheldHQ recommends the Mupen64Plus-Next core in RetroArch. On Android, M64Plus FZ is the more direct starting point, although RetroArch is also available. The emulator, renderer and per-game profile matter almost as much as the handheld’s advertised chipset.

Anbernic RG Cube: the balanced recommendation

Why it fits Mario 64

GamesRadar presents the RG Cube as a capable handheld for difficult N64 emulation. Its Android software lets you use M64Plus FZ or RetroArch, and its control layout includes the analog input that Mario 64 expects. That combination makes it a sensible all-rounder for someone who wants Mario 64, other N64 games and the option to test Android-compatible homebrew.

The recommendation is about balance rather than a promise that every N64 title will be perfect. Start with the documented game profile, then change only the setting that addresses a visible problem. Android also makes it easier to install alternate emulator versions, move legally obtained files and try a different renderer when a particular game needs it.

Who should buy it

  • Players who want one handheld for Mario 64 and a broad retro collection.
  • People who prefer Android’s emulator choice over a fixed Linux image.
  • Buyers willing to tune individual games instead of expecting one universal preset.

GamesRadar links an RG Cube listing, but price and stock change. Check the current listing, included storage and return policy before ordering rather than treating an old advertised price as a standing recommendation.

Actual runtime varies by game, screen brightness, volume, Wi-Fi, RGB lighting, and vibration use. For safe charging, use the included cable with a 5V/2A power source and do not use a power source that supplies more than 5V.

Retroid Pocket 5: the higher-headroom option

The Retroid Pocket 5 is the step-up choice when your priority is performance margin. GamesRadar lists it as a more expensive handheld option, and the additional headroom is useful for demanding N64 software, higher-resolution rendering and experimentation with homebrew builds. It is the better fit if “Can it run Mario 64?” is only the beginning of your library.

Higher headroom does not remove compatibility variables. Emulator version, graphics backend, game region and resolution still affect the result. Treat the Pocket 5 as a stronger platform for testing, not as a universal guarantee for every ROM hack or demake.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the current listing, price, firmware and included accessories. The available evidence does not establish a current retail figure for the Pocket 5. A separate RetroHandheldHQ comparison lists the Retroid Pocket 6 at $244 and the Retroid Pocket Classic at $99 in September 2026; those are dated reference prices for different models, not prices for the Pocket 5.

R36H-class handhelds: the budget Mario 64 route

GamesRadar says cheaper RH36-class hardware can handle Super Mario 64. That makes this class attractive when the goal is one game at the lowest possible cost. The same guide warns that Expansion Pak software and harder games such as Perfect Dark and GoldenEye may suffer, so do not buy an R36H expecting the whole N64 catalog to behave like Mario 64.

Budget Linux handhelds also provide less flexibility than Android devices. You may have fewer emulator builds and renderer choices, and some tuning can require editing configuration files or replacing a system image. Confirm that the exact unit has a working analog stick and that its firmware includes a usable N64 emulator before assuming two similarly named listings are equivalent.

When the budget choice makes sense

  • Your primary target is the original Super Mario 64 release.
  • You accept occasional per-game tuning and do not need the complete N64 library.
  • You are comfortable with a smaller screen and less operating-system flexibility.

Anbernic RG35XX H: an inexpensive Linux alternative

RetroHandheldHQ rates the RG35XX H as “good” for N64 and gives it a $60 reference price in a 2026 comparison. Heavy games need tuning, so its position is between the very cheapest Mario 64 devices and the more capable Android recommendations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a reasonable choice when you want a simple Linux interface and are prepared to adjust the Mupen64Plus-Next profile. The $60 figure is a comparison reference, not a guaranteed current price; verify the seller, firmware version, storage card and return terms. If you want to run multiple demanding N64 games or test several demakes, the RG Cube or Pocket 5 provides more practical headroom.

Super Mario 64 emulator setup

Use legally obtained game files and follow the distribution terms for every homebrew project. The exact menu names can change with emulator releases, but this sequence matches the documented profile and the recommended software.

Android: M64Plus FZ

  1. Install M64Plus FZ from a legitimate source and grant it access to the folder containing your legally obtained game file.
  2. Open the game list and select the NTSC version of Super Mario 64. The Retroid Handhelds Wiki documents this combination with Mupen64Plus FZ, the Rice no-fs graphics profile and a 640×480 resolution.
  3. Map the analog stick to the N64 control stick, the d-pad to the directional buttons, four face buttons to A, B and the C buttons, and the shoulder controls to L, R and Z.
  4. Launch the game and test movement, camera control, menus and audio before changing graphics settings.
  5. If the picture is unstable, change the renderer or profile first. Raise resolution only after the game is stable; higher internal resolution increases GPU work.
  6. The documented profile includes a de-synced-audio note. If sound drifts from the action, try the profile’s alternate audio or synchronization option before changing several settings at once.

Android: RetroArch

  1. Install RetroArch and obtain the Mupen64Plus-Next core through its core-management screen.
  2. Load the legally obtained NTSC game file and assign the analog stick, d-pad, face buttons, bumpers and trigger to the N64 controls.
  3. Begin at 640×480 or the core’s conservative default. Test a complete level, not just the title screen.
  4. Change one variable at a time: graphics backend, resolution, then frame-skip only if necessary. Record the setting that fixes the problem so you can restore it after an update.

Linux: Mupen64Plus-Next in RetroArch

  1. Update the handheld’s firmware using the manufacturer’s documented method and back up save files first.
  2. Install or enable RetroArch’s Mupen64Plus-Next core if it is not already included.
  3. Place your legally obtained game file in the configured ROM directory and scan that directory.
  4. Map the physical analog stick and all shoulder controls manually if the default profile is incorrect.
  5. Start at the conservative game profile, then adjust renderer and resolution only when you can identify a specific visual or performance issue.

Choosing a handheld for fan-made demakes

“Demake” describes several different technical formats, so there is no universal demake compatibility guarantee. A project may be a native Android, Linux or Windows port; a ROM hack that needs an N64 emulator; or a homebrew build with its own executable and graphics requirements.

Check the release format

  • Native Android build: Requires an installable package, a compatible Android version and enough GPU capability.
  • Native Linux build: Requires the correct CPU architecture, libraries, permissions and controller mapping.
  • Windows build: Usually needs a Windows handheld or a compatibility layer; a Linux or Android retro handheld may not run it.
  • ROM hack: Requires the stated base ROM, the correct region and an emulator profile that supports the hack’s features.
  • Homebrew executable: May require a specific emulator, firmware, BIOS file or input layout listed by the developer.

Use a project-by-project checklist

  1. Read the project’s release page and identify the supported operating systems.
  2. Check whether the download is a ROM patch, an emulator-ready image, an Android package or a desktop executable.
  3. Compare the stated CPU, GPU, RAM and storage requirements with the handheld’s actual hardware.
  4. Confirm controller mapping, especially analog-stick, trigger and C-button assignments.
  5. Test from a fresh save and keep the original game file separate from patched or experimental files.
  6. Follow the project’s license and distribution rules; do not redistribute copyrighted base ROMs.

The available compatibility information does not provide a named demake-by-device table. Therefore, the Pocket 5 is the safest performance bet for demanding projects, while the RG Cube is the better value balance, but every demake still requires verification against its own release requirements.

Common problems and fixes

The game boots but runs slowly

Lower internal resolution, switch to the profile recommended for the game and disable enhancements before enabling frame-skip. Frame-skip can hide a performance deficit but makes movement less smooth, so use it only after renderer and resolution changes.

Textures or effects are missing

Try a different graphics plugin or renderer. N64 effects are not implemented identically across plugins, and a setting that fixes one title can break another. Keep a per-game profile rather than replacing the global default.

Audio is delayed or out of sync

Start with the documented Super Mario 64 profile, which notes de-synced audio. Test the emulator’s audio synchronization choices before changing video settings; audio drift can be a profile issue rather than insufficient hardware.

Controls feel wrong

Rebind the analog stick rather than substituting the d-pad. Confirm that the C buttons are assigned to four distinct face or shoulder inputs and that Z is reachable without releasing the analog stick.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A demake will not install

Identify its release type first. A Linux binary will not automatically run on Android, and a ROM patch needs the correct base ROM and region. Check architecture, operating-system support, permissions and required libraries before blaming the handheld’s performance.

Buying checklist

  • Choose Android for the widest emulator and homebrew flexibility; choose Linux when you prefer a simpler fixed interface.
  • Require a real analog stick for Super Mario 64.
  • Use 640×480, quad-core Cortex-A55-or-better processing, 3GB RAM and 32GB storage as a practical baseline.
  • Prioritize GPU and emulator headroom if you plan to play Expansion Pak titles or demanding demakes.
  • Confirm shoulder bumpers and triggers, not just the number of face buttons.
  • Verify current price, stock, firmware and return terms; the listed prices are dated references and can change.
  • Check each demake’s operating-system, controller and GPU requirements before purchase.

Final recommendation

For most readers, buy the Anbernic RG Cube and use Android with M64Plus FZ or RetroArch. It offers the most useful balance of analog controls, N64 capability and software flexibility. Spend more on the Retroid Pocket 5 if demanding N64 games or experimental homebrew are central to your plans. Choose an R36H-class device only when the target is primarily Super Mario 64 and the budget is the deciding factor; its limitations become obvious across the wider N64 library.
