For a common H.264 stream, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps or 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are encoder-to-YouTube settings; YouTube transcodes the feed into formats for viewers on different devices and connections.
Choose resolution, frame rate and codec together
Bitrate is not a standalone quality setting. Match the encoder’s actual codec, output resolution and frame rate to YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate. A higher resolution or frame rate needs more upload capacity, and the best practical mode is the one your connection can maintain steadily—not necessarily the largest number your encoder offers.

The figures below are YouTube’s configuration recommendations, not independent measurements or a guarantee of the result on a particular connection. Each pair is minimum / recommended bitrate in Mbps; AV1/H.265 appears first and H.264 second. Use the column for the codec you are actually sending.
| Ingest mode | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 10 | 35 | 14 | 50 |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 8 | 30 | 11 | 42 |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 6 | 24 | 8 | 34 |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 5 | 15 | 7 | 21 |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 4 | 12 | 6 | 17 |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 4 | 10 | 5 | 14 |
| 720p, 60 fps | 2 | 6 | 3 | 8 |
| 720p, 30 fps | 2 | 6 | 3 | 8 |
| 480p, 30 fps | 0.3 | 3 | 0.4 | 4 |
| 360p, 30 fps | 0.3 | 3 | 0.4 | 4 |
For example, if you use H.264 at 1080p, select 14 Mbps at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps. If your encoder sends AV1 or H.265 instead, YouTube’s recommended figures for those modes are 10 and 12 Mbps. Do not apply an H.264 number to an AV1 or H.265 stream.

YouTube does not specify a universal upload-headroom multiplier. Check your available upload capacity and test the planned mode; if it is unstable, move down to a lower listed mode that you can sustain reliably.
Set the encoder’s video, audio and protocol options
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported streaming protocols and recommends RTMPS. Its listed video codecs are H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. The following settings reflect YouTube’s guidance; whether each option is exposed depends on your encoder.

- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: set a 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Picture format: square pixels and progressive scan.
- Advanced video: two B-frames, one reference frame and CABAC.
- SDR color: Rec. 709 and 8-bit SDR.
- HDR: YouTube lists H.265 and 10-bit depth; AV1 is not supported for HDR.
- Audio codec: AAC or MP3. For RTMP/RTMPS, 5.1 audio is supported only with AAC.
- Audio format: YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1, with 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1.
These audio figures are audio bitrates, separate from the video bitrate in the table. Make sure your encoder’s total outbound traffic and the selected video mode remain stable during a representative test.
Select a mode and test it in YouTube Live Control Room
- Choose a starting mode. Match the resolution and frame rate to the content and your connection. Use a higher frame rate when the material benefits from smoother motion; do not choose a demanding mode solely because it is available.
- Look up the matching bitrate. Use the row for the resolution and frame rate, then the column for the ingest codec. Treat the recommended value as YouTube’s target, not as proof your network can sustain it.
- Configure your encoder. Set the matching codec, CBR, 2-second keyframes, protocol and audio options above. Confirm that the output resolution and frame rate are the intended ones.
- Set YouTube’s stream options. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default in Live Control Room. Manual selection is available by creating a custom stream key and enabling manual settings. For the setup sequence, see YouTube’s guide to managing live stream settings.
- Run a representative test before the event. Include audio and video movement similar to the planned stream. Check stream health and messages in Live Control Room while the test runs; a static test image may not reveal how the real content behaves.
- Adjust based on stability. If the stream is unstable, lower the resolution or frame rate and use that mode’s bitrate recommendation. Test again rather than assuming a particular setting will work on every connection.
What viewers receive—and the 4K latency limitation
Your encoder setting describes the feed sent to YouTube; it does not guarantee that every viewer receives that exact resolution. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into multiple output formats for viewers’ devices and network conditions.

If you stream at 2160p (4K), YouTube’s low-latency improvement option is unavailable: all 4K streams use normal latency. Consider that trade-off when choosing 4K for a live event where responsiveness matters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot bitrate and stream instability
- The stream drops frames or becomes unstable: the selected mode may exceed what the connection can sustain reliably. Test a lower resolution or frame rate, apply its corresponding codec-specific bitrate, and monitor stream health again.
- The bitrate recommendation seems wrong: check the encoder’s actual codec, resolution and frame rate. A 1080p60 H.264 feed uses a different recommendation from 1080p60 AV1/H.265.
- Keyframe interval warnings appear: set the interval to 2 seconds and ensure it does not exceed 4 seconds.
- You cannot manually select the stream mode: YouTube’s manual option requires a custom stream key with manual settings enabled; otherwise, automatic detection is the recommended default.
- Picture or sound does not match the planned output: verify progressive scan, square pixels, the intended SDR or HDR format, audio codec, sample rate and channel configuration in the encoder, then test again before going live.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream rather than broadcast a live camera or event, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. The uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode it. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
