For a mini PC you already own, OBS Studio is the best-supported starting point for a continuous YouTube stream. YouTube lists OBS among its verified encoders and describes it as free, open-source software. That is not a performance guarantee: OBS warns that meeting its basic system requirements does not mean a computer can sustain a particular stream. If your content is prerecorded and you do not want a PC running at home, a cloud service may be a better fit.

For a prerecorded loop, a full production suite is not automatically an advantage. Choose OBS if you need local control or live production inputs; choose a cloud workflow if avoiding a continuously running home computer matters more. The available official descriptions do not provide a head-to-head performance or uptime comparison of these options.

Check the mini PC before committing to OBS
OBS supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. On Linux/Unix, its stated requirements include an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland. OBS explicitly cautions that meeting system requirements does not ensure that a machine can stream or record the selected workload. Set up a continuous stream with OBS
- Confirm YouTube live eligibility. The channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room, create or select the stream, and copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. Connecting the encoder creates a watch page; for a scheduled broadcast, YouTube may also require you to start it from Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Choose a supported protocol and video format. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. For a straightforward OBS setup, use the codec and protocol you have verified work with your installed OBS build and YouTube’s current guidance. Reference: YouTube encoder settings.
- Use constant bitrate and set keyframes deliberately. YouTube recommends CBR (constant bitrate), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. These are encoder settings, not a promise that a weak upload connection or overloaded mini PC will hold the stream.
- Start conservatively with resolution and bitrate. YouTube’s H.264 guidance lists 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps; its listed minimums are respectively 5 Mbps and 3 Mbps. Match the setting to upload capacity, frame rate, codec, and the mini PC’s ability to encode. Do a speed test, then test with audio and motion similar to the real broadcast rather than relying on a static preview.
- Monitor stream health during the test. Review YouTube’s stream-health status and messages while the encoder is running. If dropped frames or encoder overload appears, lower the workload—such as resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity—and test again.
- Plan the broadcast duration around archiving. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on a single complete replay for a broadcast longer than 12 hours; if a complete archive matters, schedule shorter sessions and verify the resulting recording in YouTube Studio. What “24/7” requires beyond encoder software
OBS can send a stream while the mini PC, power, network, and software keep operating, but the cited documentation does not certify a particular mini PC for unattended use or promise recovery after a power, network, or software failure. YouTube’s simultaneous-stream limits are 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key, with both limits applying at once; see YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
If you choose the local route, treat restart scripts, watchdogs, remote monitoring, and backup power as separate operational measures—not features guaranteed by OBS or YouTube. Test recovery on your actual equipment, including what happens after the network drops and returns. Do not assume a long-running stream will reconnect correctly without verifying it.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Having permission to broadcast a video is essential, but permission alone does not guarantee monetization or prevent other YouTube policy issues. Before looping content, confirm that you have the rights to the video, music, images, and any other material it contains, and review YouTube’s current rules for live streams and monetization. Repeatedly broadcasting prerecorded content does not by itself establish that a channel qualifies for monetization. Keep records of licenses and permissions and check the channel’s notices in YouTube Studio.
