ExtentReports suits teams that prefer to log events and screenshots directly from tests and customize report output. Neither is universally best: choose based on your language, runner, diagnostic needs and report workflow. Selenium Grid is execution infrastructure, not a reporting alternative.
How to choose a Selenium reporting tool
Start with the stack and the failure information you need, then check how reports are generated and retained. “Supports Selenium” alone is not enough: the integration between the language, test runner, reporter version and CI system determines whether the setup works.

- Language and runner: Confirm an adapter exists for your exact language and framework, and that it supports the major version you plan to run.
- Failure detail: Decide whether you need steps, stack traces, screenshots, browser logs, network events or other runtime data.
- History: Determine whether you need to compare runs, group reruns, investigate flaky tests or view results across environments.
- Publishing and retention: Choose between generated files, CI artifacts, a hosted report or database-backed storage. Set artifact retention and access controls to match your requirements.
- Parallel execution: Check how results from separate workers are collected and combined, and whether attachments remain available after the merge.
- Edition and licensing: Verify current license terms, reporter availability and paid-service boundaries before standardizing.
Allure Report: structured results and history
Allure Report is an open-source, framework-agnostic result visualization tool. Its workflow separates test execution from report generation: an integration writes result files, and the Allure utility reads those files to create an interactive HTML report. The files can be generated locally, published to a web server or handled through documented CI integrations.

What it is suited to
Allure is a good candidate when a team wants consistent presentation across multiple test frameworks or languages, with details such as steps, attachments, filters, timelines and analytics. Its file-based flow also lets teams retain test execution and report generation as separate build stages. Results from parallel nodes can be combined after the files are brought together.
Allure 2 documents history comparisons, categories, timelines and ways to investigate unstable tests. Allure 3 adds a rebuilt TypeScript architecture and capabilities documented for rerun grouping, multiple environments, live updates, quality gates and built-in storage. These are version-specific distinctions, not a guarantee that every integration or workflow is available on both major versions.
Choose the version with integrations in mind
Allure documentation characterizes version 2 as the mature option with the broadest integration range. The integration guide lists tools and plugins with version qualifications: for example, GitHub Actions is listed for Allure 3 and TeamCity for Allure 2. Check the current integration page for your CI and framework before selecting a major version; do not assume feature or plugin parity.
Useful diagnostics for Java Selenium teams
Allure’s Selenium BiDi integration can attach browser log and network events to results for qualifying Java setups. Its documentation specifies Java 17 or later and validation against Selenium Java 4.44, and lists compatibility with Allure Java integrations including JUnit Jupiter and TestNG. These are documented compatibility details, not a promise that a different Java, Selenium or adapter version will work unchanged. Verify the current requirements before adopting it.
Local reports versus centralized management
Generating a local Allure report does not require a centralized management service. Teams that need manual and automated case tracking and analysis across launches or projects can also consider Allure TestOps, which Allure documentation identifies as a paid product. Treat it as an optional expansion, not a prerequisite for using Allure Report.
ExtentReports: logging-driven, customizable output
ExtentReports is a logger-style reporting library. Its documented report content can include events, screenshots, tags, devices and authors, with customizable templates and multiple destinations. It is a reasonable choice when your team wants to compose report content within its test logging flow and control how that output is presented.
Check the version before copying an example
Extent APIs have changed across versions. The version 5 Java documentation says ExtentHtmlReporter and ExtentLoggerReporter were removed and identifies ExtentSparkReporter as the replacement. Older tutorials can therefore lead to compile errors or direct you to an API that no longer applies to your version.
Rank #4
Extent’s versioned documentation describes differences between community and professional functionality, including reporter-specific availability. Confirm the current language binding, test-runner integration, reporter name, edition and license before adopting a snippet or relying on a particular destination.

What to verify for history and analytics
Extent’s official site describes realtime analytics and report customization. The available official material does not establish a feature-for-feature equivalent to Allure’s documented long-term history and cross-run analysis. If those capabilities matter, test the specific reporting and retention workflow you intend to use instead of inferring it from the phrase “realtime analytics.”

Allure Report vs ExtentReports
| Need | Allure Report | ExtentReports | Decision check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Language and framework breadth | Documentation describes framework-agnostic use and multiple integrations. | Official materials describe a reporting library and versioned Java/.NET documentation; support depends on the current binding and adapter. | Confirm the exact language, test runner and adapter, not merely Selenium support. |
| Failure diagnostics | Steps, attachments, stack traces and runtime data are documented. Selenium BiDi adds browser logs and network events for qualifying Java setups. | Documented content includes events, logs, screenshots, tags, devices and authors. | Run a representative failure and verify the artifacts are persisted and visible. |
| History and analytics | Allure 2 documents history comparisons, categories and timelines; Allure 3 documents reruns, environments, live reporting and quality gates. | The site describes realtime analytics and customization; the cited official material does not establish equivalent long-term history features. | Distinguish generated local-report capabilities from a separate managed service. |
| Output and data flow | Generates static HTML from result files; can be opened locally, published or used with integrations. | Offers multiple reporter destinations; versioned docs describe HTML/Spark and Klov. | Consider artifact retention, privacy, parallel result merging and whether file or database-backed output fits. |
| CI workflow | Documented integrations include Azure DevOps, Jenkins, Maven and Gradle, with version qualifications; GitHub Actions is listed for Allure 3 and TeamCity for Allure 2. | Library reporters can attach report output to test workflows; exact runner support depends on the stack. | Check current integration maintenance and major-version compatibility. |
| Cost and governance | Allure Report is described as open source; TestOps is a separate paid service. | Documentation distinguishes community and professional functionality; some reporters may be edition-specific. | Verify current licenses, edition boundaries, support and procurement terms directly. |
Where Selenium Grid fits
Selenium Grid routes WebDriver commands to remote browser instances. It is for executing tests across machines, browsers and platforms, including parallel runs; it does not generate or present test reports. Grid and a reporting library can be used together: Grid runs the sessions, while the reporting integration records and formats their outcomes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to add useful evidence to Selenium reports
- Confirm the integration path. Identify the exact language, runner, reporter and versions. Check the official integration documentation rather than relying on an example written for a different major version.
- Record actionable structure. Add test steps and meaningful labels or metadata so a failure can be located and understood. Avoid logging sensitive values such as credentials or session tokens.
- Attach failure artifacts. Configure screenshots and other relevant files to be captured and attached when a test fails. For Allure Java setups that meet the documented requirements, consider browser logs and network events through its Selenium BiDi integration.
- Preserve artifacts through CI. Persist result files, screenshots and logs as build artifacts, or publish the generated report to an access-controlled location. Confirm retention and access settings fit your team’s privacy policy.
- Test parallel merging. Run workers concurrently, collect their result files into the report-generation stage and confirm that tests and attachments appear once and are correctly associated.
- Exercise a real failure. Cause a controlled test failure and inspect the rendered report. Verify the error, screenshot and other expected evidence are present before treating the setup as complete.
Common setup problems and fixes
- Reporter classes do not compile: The code may target another major version. Compare the imports and reporter names with the documentation for the installed version; for ExtentReports v5 Java, use the documented Spark reporter rather than removed v4 reporter classes.
- Report is empty or missing tests: The report generator may be reading the wrong results directory, or the adapter may not have written results. Check the test-run output path and make the CI report step consume that same directory.
- Screenshots are absent: Capturing a screenshot and attaching it to a report are separate steps. Confirm the failure hook runs, that the screenshot file is saved, and that the reporting adapter receives the file or attachment data.
- Parallel runs lose or overwrite results: Workers may be writing into a shared directory with conflicting files, or the report step may run before artifacts are collected. Give workers safe result locations, gather all results, then generate the report from the combined set.
- CI integration does not match the chosen Allure version: Integrations are version-qualified. Check the documented support for the selected major version and use an integration that matches it.
- History is missing between builds: A report can only compare runs when the required history data is preserved and made available to later report generations. Verify the CI artifact or storage flow rather than assuming a newly generated report retains prior runs automatically.
- Browser logs or network events are missing: For the Allure Selenium BiDi path, verify Java 17+, the documented Selenium Java compatibility and the required integration configuration. Do not expect those attachments from an unrelated language or setup.
- Report contains sensitive data: Review logged values and attachments, then restrict report publication and artifact access. Screenshots, headers and browser logs can expose private information.
Or skip the browser setup
For browser screenshots used as test evidence or in a separate capture workflow, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before capture, and only clean shots are billed. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts and failed loads cost nothing; responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and its API returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from a GET request.
One-call cURL example (replace the target URL as needed):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. It includes 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card required.
