For a useful automated baseline, test across Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit—not just several browsers built on Chromium. Add branded Chrome or Edge when you need to match a supported browser, verify a release against its stable public build, account for enterprise policies, or test media codecs. Then choose operating systems, versions, and devices according to your users and support commitments.
Start with browser engines, not browser names
A browser engine does much of the work that determines how a page renders and behaves. A practical starting matrix covers three engine families: Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Testing Chrome and Edge alone does not give you coverage of Firefox or WebKit behavior, because both are Chromium-derived browsers.
Playwright can run a project against Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit through a common test API. Its project configurations also support branded Chrome and Edge, as well as emulated device profiles. See Playwright projects.
A baseline matrix
| Target | What it adds | When to include it |
|---|---|---|
| Chromium | Coverage of the Chromium engine family using Playwright’s bundled browser. | As one of the core engine targets in an automated baseline. |
| Firefox | A distinct engine family from Chromium. | As part of the core cross-engine baseline. |
| WebKit | A distinct engine family from Chromium and Firefox. | As part of the core cross-engine baseline; add platform-specific checks when your supported audience requires them. |
| Stable Google Chrome | A check against the branded browser’s publicly available stable build. | When matching Chrome releases or testing Chrome-specific requirements matters. |
| Stable Microsoft Edge | A check against the branded browser’s publicly available stable build. | When matching Edge releases, enterprise policies, or Edge-specific requirements matters. |
This is a starting point, not a universal checklist. Whether each project belongs in your continuous integration pipeline depends on the browsers and platforms your product claims to support.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When to test bundled Chromium, Chrome, or Edge
Playwright’s bundled Chromium and branded Chrome or Edge answer different testing questions. Playwright documents that its Chromium build can be ahead of stable branded releases, making it useful for catching changes that may reach users later. For regression testing against a browser your users can install now, test the stable branded build instead. See Playwright’s browser documentation.
- Use bundled Chromium for a current engine-level check within Playwright’s supported browser workflow.
- Add stable Chrome or Edge when a release must work in that exact branded browser or your support policy names it.
- Test official browser binaries for codec-sensitive features where media support in the branded browser is part of the requirement. Playwright notes that some media codecs are available only in official browser binaries.
- Account for enterprise Edge policies if your users run managed Edge installations and those policies can affect your app.
Microsoft Learn describes Playwright this way: “The Playwright library provides cross-browser automation through a single API.” That is a description of its automation interface, not a claim that browser behavior or platform coverage is identical. Read Microsoft’s Playwright guidance for Edge.
Choose versions, operating systems, and devices from requirements
Engine coverage is only one axis. A test on a different operating system, browser version, or form factor can expose issues that an engine-only matrix will not. Do not multiply every browser by every OS and version without a reason: start with the combinations your product supports, your users need, or your release process must verify.

Operating systems and versions
Include an OS/browser combination when it represents a supported user environment, a known product requirement, or a release-risk area. Playwright’s projects let you define separate configurations, while hosted services can provide combinations that are inconvenient to maintain locally. Do not infer broad OS coverage from a test that ran on only one platform.
Mobile and tablet
Playwright projects can use emulated mobile and tablet device settings. Emulation is a useful way to exercise responsive layouts and device-oriented browser settings in automation, but the cited documentation does not establish that it replaces testing on physical devices. If your support promise or critical user journeys depend on real hardware, arrange device testing for those cases.
Keep the matrix manageable
- List the browsers and platforms your product explicitly supports.
- Choose Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit as the engine baseline for automated cross-browser checks.
- Add stable Chrome or Edge only for a concrete branded-browser, enterprise, release, or codec requirement.
- Choose OS, browser version, and form factor combinations that correspond to your support commitments or user needs.
- Run the broader combinations on a hosted grid if maintaining the required environments locally is impractical.
Run Playwright projects across the baseline
Playwright’s test projects let you run the same test suite with different browser configurations. For an initial baseline, install Playwright Test and its browsers, then define one project per engine. The following is a minimal configuration example using the standard Playwright Test package:

Install the test package and browser binaries with the commands below. Run the suite across all configured projects, or select one project to diagnose a failure.
npm install --save-dev @playwright/test
npx playwright install
npx playwright test
npx playwright test --project=webkit
Project configuration details and supported browser options are documented in Playwright’s projects guide and browser guide. The exact project names and device descriptors are part of your configuration; adjust them to the browser targets your test suite needs.
Use a hosted browser grid when local coverage is insufficient
A hosted grid can be useful when you need browser, version, or OS combinations that are difficult to install and maintain in your own CI environment. BrowserStack documents supported Playwright versions, browsers, and OS combinations for its Automate service. Check its current capability listings to confirm the combination you need before building a pipeline around it: Playwright browser and OS support and supported browser and version capabilities.

A hosted grid expands environment availability; it does not decide which environments matter for your users. The cited documentation establishes available combinations, not a price comparison or a universal best provider.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common cross-browser testing mistakes
- Testing only Chrome and Edge: both are Chromium-based, so add Firefox and WebKit if you need a cross-engine baseline.
- Confusing bundled Chromium with stable Chrome: use the branded stable browser when the goal is to match the public Chrome or Edge release.
- Expanding the matrix without a support reason: prioritize combinations tied to your product commitments instead of running every possible OS and version.
- Treating emulation as physical-device coverage: use device profiles for automated emulation, and validate on hardware when your requirements call for it.
- Assuming a browser name guarantees a codec result: use official Chrome or Edge binaries when media-codec availability is the behavior under test.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you need is a clean screenshot of a web page rather than a browser automation test, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It is not a substitute for a cross-browser test matrix: it captures pages as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, while Playwright runs tests against browser projects.
Example using cURL (replace the URL with the page you want to capture):
