Use Selenium’s JavaScript driver.wait() to wait for the page state your next command actually needs—such as an element being located, visible, or marked ready by your application. Use executeAsyncScript() only when asynchronous work must finish inside the browser and signal completion through Selenium’s callback. A page finishing navigation does not necessarily mean its dynamically rendered interface is ready.
Why navigation finishing is not enough
Selenium navigation waits for a page-load target such as a configured readyState. That covers assets defined in the HTML, but JavaScript can continue changing the page afterward. An element needed for the next command may not exist yet, or may exist but still be hidden. Synchronize on the condition that matters to your interaction rather than assuming that navigation completion means the application is ready.
Use driver.wait() for ordinary readiness checks
In Selenium’s JavaScript bindings, driver.wait() repeatedly checks a condition until it returns a truthy value or the timeout expires. It accepts Selenium conditions, functions, and thenables. The condition should represent the minimum state needed for the next operation; element presence, visibility, and application readiness are not interchangeable.
Wait until an element is located
This is appropriate when the next step only requires that a locator find the element:

const button = await driver.wait(
until.elementLocated(By.id('submit')),
10_000
);
await button.click();
elementLocated establishes that the element exists in the DOM. If the page can create it while hidden, presence alone is not a sound basis for interaction; wait for visibility instead.
Wait until a known element is visible
Use a visibility condition when you already have a WebElement and need it to become displayed:

const field = await driver.findElement(By.id('revealed'));
await driver.wait(until.elementIsVisible(field), 2_000);
await field.sendKeys('ready');
This example assumes the element can already be found. If it is created later, first wait for it to be located, then test visibility.
Wait for application-specific state
When the application exposes a useful readiness signal, a custom condition can check it. Return a truthy value only when the next operation can safely proceed:

await driver.wait(async () => {
return await driver.executeScript(
'return document.querySelector("#app")?.dataset.state === "ready"'
);
}, 10_000);
The JavaScript API permits function conditions and promise-like results. Time spent resolving an asynchronous condition counts toward the wait timeout.
When to use executeAsyncScript()
executeAsyncScript() runs code in the selected browser frame or window and waits for the injected completion callback. Use it when an asynchronous browser-side operation itself must finish before Selenium proceeds—not as the default way to wait for an element that can be observed with driver.wait().

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
const result = await driver.executeAsyncScript((done) => {
window.setTimeout(() => done('complete'), 500);
});
Selenium supplies the callback as the final script argument. Invoke it on every success path; otherwise the script can remain pending until the script timeout interrupts it. If using a string script, Selenium’s documentation also shows retrieving the callback through arguments[arguments.length - 1]. Check function serialization and argument behavior against the Selenium binding version installed in your project.
Choose the wait that matches the next action
| Need | Approach | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| A matching element exists | driver.wait(until.elementLocated(locator), timeout) |
The locator can find an element. |
| A known element is displayed | driver.wait(until.elementIsVisible(element), timeout) |
Selenium’s visibility condition is satisfied. |
| An application-specific condition is true | driver.wait(async () => condition, timeout) |
The state your function checks is truthy. |
| An asynchronous browser script has finished | driver.executeAsyncScript(...) |
The injected completion callback was invoked. |
| Only a fixed duration has passed | driver.sleep(ms) |
Time elapsed; no readiness condition was established. |
Fixed sleeps can be too short and fail, or unnecessarily long and slow. A condition-based wait follows the state of the page instead of relying on a guessed delay.

Timeouts and wait configuration
The generated Selenium JavaScript WebDriver API reference lists a 30,000 ms default script timeout. That is an API default, not a guarantee for every installed release; verify the reference for your version and set a deliberate script timeout when relying on it. The script timeout controls when Selenium interrupts an executing script such as one awaiting the callback in executeAsyncScript(). It is distinct from the timeout passed to driver.wait().
A current Selenium JavaScript overview retrieved for this guide documents installation with npm install selenium-webdriver, an async/await quick start, and Node.js 22 or later. Package and runtime requirements can change, so check the Selenium JavaScript documentation for the release you install.
Troubleshoot common wait failures
- Element not found just after navigation: the page may still be adding content after navigation reaches its configured ready state. Wait for the specific locator or an application readiness signal.
- Element is found, but interaction fails: location proves DOM presence, not visibility or readiness for the intended action. Choose a condition that matches the operation.
- An explicit wait takes unexpectedly long: Selenium warns that mixing implicit and explicit waits can produce unpredictable elapsed times. Avoid combining them casually; prefer explicit conditions for the state being tested.
- An asynchronous script hangs: ensure every completion path calls the injected callback, and configure a script timeout appropriate to the operation.
- Tests are slow or flaky with sleeps: a fixed sleep does not observe page readiness. Replace it with a condition-based wait where possible.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to obtain a screenshot rather than exercise a browser interaction, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor would and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed as clean shots, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing outcome. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
Example cURL request (replace the target URL as needed):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
