For smoother Red Dead Redemption 2 performance on PC, set your resolution and frame-rate target first, use Rockstar’s Quality slider as a baseline, then lower Reflection Quality and Volumetrics Quality before sacrificing texture quality. Keep MSAA off or low, test Vulkan and DirectX 12 on your own system, and use DLSS 2.2 or FSR 2.2 in Quality mode when native resolution cannot hold the target. Run Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test after each meaningful group of changes, then verify the result in a demanding area of the game.

There is no universal best preset. The right balance depends on GPU memory, CPU load, resolution, drivers, patches and, on laptops, power limits. The figures below are evidence-based starting points rather than guarantees for every PC.

The settings that usually deliver the biggest gains

Red Dead Redemption 2 has unusually large performance differences between individual options. Lowering everything at once can make the game look worse while leaving the real bottleneck untouched. A more effective order is:

  1. Choose the resolution and a realistic frame-rate cap.
  2. Start with Rockstar’s in-game Quality slider and run the benchmark.
  3. Reduce Reflection Quality and Volumetrics Quality first.
  4. Check Water Quality, Near Volumetric Resolution and MSAA if performance is still short.
  5. Use DLSS 2.2 or FSR 2.2 Quality before making large texture cuts on a card with at least 4GB of VRAM.
  6. Compare Vulkan and DirectX 12 if frame pacing, crashes or unusually low performance remain.

PC Gamer’s controlled testing identified reflections and volumetrics as the two major frame-rate levers. Global illumination, shadows, ambient occlusion and textures generally produce smaller gains, while visibly lowering texture quality. Rockstar likewise lists MSAA, reflections, water, volumetrics and near-volumetric resolution among the first settings to adjust.

Set a target before changing image quality

Pick the resolution you actually want to play

Resolution determines how many pixels the GPU must render and therefore affects every later decision. Use the monitor’s native resolution when possible, but do not treat 4K as mandatory on a 1440p or 1080p display. If your target is 60 fps, a stable 60 is usually preferable to an uncapped average that repeatedly falls into the 40s.

Choose a cap that your system can sustain

Decide whether the priority is 30, 40, 60 or a higher refresh-rate target. A cap reduces unnecessary GPU work and can improve frame-time consistency. Set it through the game or your display-driver control panel, then judge success by the worst regular dips rather than the highest number seen while looking at the sky.

Make the test conditions repeatable

Close unnecessary overlays and background workloads, connect a laptop to AC power, and select the system’s performance power mode. Use the same API, resolution and scene while comparing settings. Changing several unrelated variables at once makes it impossible to know which option helped.

Use Rockstar’s Quality slider as the starting point

Rockstar’s official workflow is to select the desired resolution and move the in-game Quality slider toward performance or quality. The game evaluates the selected resolution and the performance preference, then creates a baseline. This is a starting point, not a final preset: different settings have different effects on different hardware.

For manual control, enable or unlock the advanced graphics settings in the Graphics menu. Change one logical group at a time and select Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test. Record the average frame rate, the lowest-feeling sections and whether camera movement remains smooth. The built-in benchmark is useful for comparing changes, but it is not a guarantee of performance in every town, weather condition or firefight.

Which options to lower first

Setting Why it costs performance Recommended first move Image-quality trade-off
Reflection Quality Renders detailed reflections on water, wet surfaces and materials. Lower one or two steps before reducing textures. Reflections become less detailed or update at lower quality; the world itself remains sharp.
Volumetrics Quality Controls fog, mist, smoke and light shafts over large distances. Use a medium or high value rather than ultra when chasing frame rate. Atmospheric depth and distant light beams are less precise.
Water Quality Combines water simulation and rendering work. Lower it if rivers, rain or marshes cause the largest dips. Water movement and surface detail are simplified.
Near Volumetric Resolution Sets the resolution of volumetric effects close to the camera. Reduce it after the main volumetric setting. Nearby fog and light shafts look softer.
MSAA Multisample anti-aliasing is extremely expensive at high levels. Keep it off or low unless the GPU has substantial headroom. Some geometry edges may shimmer more; temporal anti-aliasing or an upscaler can help.
Global Illumination Adds indirect-lighting calculations across scenes. Lower it after reflections and volumetrics. Interior and indirect-light transitions lose some subtlety.
Shadow Quality Renders shadow maps at greater resolution and distance. Use high rather than ultra when GPU time is tight. Edges and distant shadows are less defined.
SSAO Adds contact shading around objects and surfaces. Reduce one step if the GPU is still overloaded. Creases and contact areas look flatter.
Texture Quality Uses VRAM and affects streaming more than raw GPU compute. On a GPU with 4GB or more VRAM, keep high or ultra until other options are tested. Lower settings visibly reduce surface detail.

Rockstar also exposes temporal anti-aliasing, lighting, anisotropic filtering, far shadows, tessellation, FXAA, volumetric lighting, triple buffering, particle quality, mirror quality and far-volumetric settings. Treat these as second-stage adjustments after the major levers above, and change them in groups that address the symptom you are seeing.

Three practical starting presets

These are tuning paths, not guaranteed results. Apply the path closest to your hardware, then validate it with the benchmark and normal gameplay.

Target Resolution and frame-rate aim Starting choices What to adjust next
Balanced 1080p 1080p, roughly 30–60 fps on a 4GB-class GPU Quality slider toward performance; high textures; medium reflections and volumetrics; MSAA off; temporal anti-aliasing enabled; Vulkan first. Lower water and near-volumetric resolution if busy outdoor scenes dip; try an upscaler only when native 1080p misses the cap.
Sharper 1440p 1440p, with a stable cap chosen from benchmark results High textures if VRAM allows; reflections and volumetrics one or two steps below maximum; MSAA off or low; DLSS or FSR Quality if available. Reduce global illumination, shadows and SSAO in that order before cutting texture quality.
High-end visual quality Native resolution with the highest sustainable cap Begin near the Quality slider’s quality end; keep textures high or ultra; use MSAA only after confirming GPU headroom; compare Vulkan and DX12. Trim individual heavy settings rather than dropping the entire preset when a demanding scene exposes a bottleneck.

The 1080p path reflects PC Gamer’s 2019 observation that a GTX 1060 or RX 570-class card with 4GB of VRAM could run the game at about 30–60 fps. That is historical benchmark evidence, not a 2026 promise: newer patches, drivers, CPUs, laptop power limits and other system differences can change the result.

Textures, VRAM and resolution scaling

Why texture quality is not the first cut on a 4GB card

Textures primarily consume video memory and can affect streaming. If the card has at least 4GB of VRAM and the game is not showing memory pressure, high or ultra textures preserve the detail in clothing, wood, rock and terrain. PC Gamer specifically found that lowering textures was visibly damaging and recommended leaving them high or ultra on GPUs with 4GB or more VRAM.

When VRAM is insufficient, symptoms can include texture pop-in, hitching while entering new areas and a settings menu that warns about memory use. In that case, reduce texture quality one step and retest. Do not assume a setting that fits in the meter will be smooth if the system is also using shared memory.

What the older low-memory guidance means

PC Gamer reported in 2019 that 3GB cards could not reasonably attempt all ultra settings and that 2GB cards were mostly limited to 1080p low. Those statements describe the hardware and game version tested at that time; they should be read as a warning about memory headroom, not as a current compatibility list.

Use an upscaler when pixel load is the problem

PCGamingWiki lists DLSS 2.2 and FSR 2.2 as high-fidelity upscaling options. Start with the Quality mode: the game renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the selected output resolution. Move to Balanced or Performance only when Quality cannot meet the frame-rate target.

Inspect horse reins, foliage, fences, hair and distant thin geometry while moving the camera. Look for ghost trails, shimmering and unstable fine detail, not just a higher counter reading. An upscaler can reduce GPU load, but it cannot solve a CPU limit or eliminate stutter caused by streaming.

Vulkan or DirectX 12?

There is no universal winner. PC Gamer standardized its testing on Vulkan but noted that DirectX 12 can perform better in some cases. API behavior depends on the GPU driver, CPU, operating-system state, shader compilation and the rest of the settings.

When to try Vulkan When to try DirectX 12
Use it as the first comparison point because it was PC Gamer’s standardized test API. Try it when Vulkan has poor frame pacing, crashes or unexpectedly low performance.
Keep it if average performance and frame times are consistently better in your repeatable scene. Keep it only if the same scene and settings show a repeatable improvement, not a one-off result.

To compare fairly, change only the API, restart the game if required, run the benchmark, then play through the same demanding area. Record both average performance and the feel of camera movement. A slightly higher average with frequent stalls is not an improvement for a capped experience.

A step-by-step tuning workflow

  1. Set display mode and resolution. Select the monitor resolution you intend to use and make sure the game is not rendering above it through an accidental supersampling option.
  2. Choose the frame-rate cap. Pick a number the hardware can sustain in towns, forests and combat, not just in an empty field.
  3. Apply the Quality slider. Move it toward performance if the initial result is below target; move it toward quality only after you have headroom.
  4. Run the built-in benchmark. Use Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test and note average smoothness, not only the headline average.
  5. Turn MSAA off or down. Re-run the benchmark. Keep temporal anti-aliasing or an appropriate upscaler active and inspect moving edges.
  6. Lower reflections. Reduce Reflection Quality one step at a time until the target is closer without making surfaces distracting.
  7. Lower volumetrics. Adjust Volumetrics Quality, then Near Volumetric Resolution if fog and light shafts still cause heavy dips.
  8. Check water. If rivers, rain or marshes are the problem scene, lower Water Quality rather than changing unrelated options.
  9. Trim secondary lighting. Test Global Illumination, Shadow Quality and SSAO in that order. Keep the highest setting that does not break frame times.
  10. Protect texture detail. On a card with at least 4GB VRAM, restore high or ultra textures before considering further texture cuts.
  11. Test DLSS 2.2 or FSR 2.2 Quality. Compare image stability and frame pacing in motion. Use a lower mode only when necessary.
  12. Compare APIs. Test Vulkan and DX12 with the same scene, cap, resolution and quality values.
  13. Verify outside the benchmark. Ride through a busy settlement, a forest or a weather-heavy area. Keep a setting only if it helps in the situations that actually bother you.

Diagnose whether the limit is the GPU or CPU

Signs of a GPU limit

  • GPU utilization remains high while lowering reflections, volumetrics or resolution raises frame rate.
  • DLSS or FSR Quality produces a clear improvement.
  • Resolution changes have a large effect, while moving from high to ultra textures has little effect on average fps.

For a GPU limit, reduce the heavy rendering options, use an upscaler and keep the frame cap realistic.

Signs of a CPU or streaming limit

  • GPU utilization falls below full load while frame rate remains low in towns or during dense scenes.
  • Lowering resolution barely changes performance.
  • Stutters occur when entering new areas even after image-quality settings are reduced.

For a CPU or streaming limit, a lower resolution will not solve the main problem. Keep image quality where it looks acceptable, use a sustainable cap and compare APIs for frame-time behavior. Close background CPU-heavy applications and avoid judging the system from a single benchmark pass.

Anti-aliasing choices and common visual problems

MSAA

MSAA can improve edge quality but is one of the most expensive options in this game. Keep it off or low unless benchmark results show substantial spare GPU time. Its cost is especially difficult to justify when the same budget could support a higher internal resolution or a better upscaler mode.

Temporal anti-aliasing

Temporal anti-aliasing smooths edges across frames but can look soft or show ghosting around moving objects. Check horse reins, foliage and fence lines while panning. If the image is too soft, first confirm that the game is not using an unnecessarily low internal resolution; do not immediately raise every expensive setting.

DLSS 2.2 and FSR 2.2

Use Quality mode as the image-quality baseline. Lower modes increase performance by rendering fewer pixels, but distant-detail stability and fine geometry are more likely to suffer. Compare a still view and a moving view, because artifacts that are invisible in a screenshot can be obvious during riding.

Frame pacing, triple buffering and caps

Average fps does not describe smoothness by itself. Two settings can show the same average while one has regular long frames. After each major change, watch camera pans, horse movement and transitions into settlements. If the game feels uneven, compare APIs and check whether the frame cap is realistic for the slowest regular scene.

Triple buffering, available among the advanced options, can change how frames are queued when synchronization is enabled. Test it with your chosen display-sync method rather than assuming it is always beneficial. Keep the option that produces consistent frame delivery without adding distracting latency.

What not to change first

  • Do not drop every setting to low before identifying the bottleneck.
  • Do not lower textures on a 4GB-or-more card when reflections and volumetrics are still at maximum.
  • Do not declare Vulkan or DX12 the winner from one run or one location.
  • Do not use a benchmark average as proof that every gameplay scene will hold the same cap.
  • Do not chase a high refresh-rate number if frequent dips make the game feel less stable than a lower cap.

A compact troubleshooting guide

Symptom Likely first test Adjustment
Low fps everywhere Check resolution, MSAA and GPU utilization. Lower MSAA, reflections and volumetrics; use DLSS or FSR Quality.
Drops in fog, rain or smoke Repeat the benchmark and a weather-heavy scene. Lower Volumetrics Quality and Near Volumetric Resolution, then Water Quality.
Drops near water Compare a river or marsh with a dry area. Reduce Water Quality before cutting textures.
Blurry image Inspect internal resolution and upscaler mode. Return to Quality mode, raise the internal scale if possible, and avoid unnecessary MSAA trade-offs.
Shimmering or ghost trails Pan across foliage, fences and reins. Compare temporal anti-aliasing and DLSS/FSR modes; select the cleanest moving image that still meets the cap.
Stutter entering new areas Watch GPU utilization and VRAM behavior. Test the other API, reduce textures if VRAM is full, close background tasks and use a lower cap if the limit is CPU or streaming related.
Crashes or unstable rendering Compare Vulkan and DX12 with identical settings. Keep the stable API, then retest the graphics options in smaller groups.

What frame rate can your hardware realistically deliver?

The clearest named baseline in the available testing is PC Gamer’s 2019 result: a GTX 1060 or RX 570-class graphics card with 4GB VRAM could run 1080p at around 30–60 fps. That range is broad because the game’s load changes by scene and because the test is historical. It is not a guarantee for a modern system, a laptop version of the same GPU or a different resolution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cards with 3GB could not reasonably attempt all ultra settings in that testing, while 2GB cards were mostly limited to 1080p low. Use those figures to set expectations about memory headroom, not to predict an exact current frame rate. A current GPU may be faster, but a weaker CPU, restricted laptop power profile, newer driver behavior or a higher display resolution can erase that advantage.

If you need a practical purchasing or upgrade criterion, the evidence-backed threshold is a graphics card with at least 4GB of VRAM for Red Dead Redemption 2. More VRAM does not automatically produce higher fps, but it gives textures and streaming more room before compromises become necessary.

The final validation checklist

  • Resolution and frame-rate cap are set before quality comparisons.
  • Rockstar’s Quality slider has been benchmarked as the baseline.
  • Reflection Quality and Volumetrics Quality were tested before texture quality was reduced.
  • MSAA is off or low unless there is verified headroom.
  • Textures remain high or ultra when a 4GB-or-more GPU has sufficient VRAM.
  • DLSS 2.2 or FSR 2.2 Quality has been checked for moving artifacts, not just still-image sharpness.
  • Vulkan and DX12 were compared under identical conditions if the first API was unstable or slow.
  • The chosen cap holds in a demanding settlement, forest and weather-heavy area.
  • The final decision considers frame-time consistency and image stability, not average fps alone.
