Best Puppeteer Alternatives for Infinite-Scroll Screenshots

Full-page capture does not guarantee an infinite feed has loaded. Compare browser automation, screenshot APIs and extensions, then use a bounded scroll-and-capture workflow.

For code-driven screenshots, Playwright is the clearest Puppeteer alternative; for a managed API, ScreenshotNeo is the first option to try. The catch is that a full-page screenshot does not necessarily load an infinite feed. First scroll through the content you want, wait for it to render, and set a stopping point; then capture. A browser extension such as GoFullPage is another route for one-off captures in a browser.

Why full-page capture can miss infinite-scroll content

Full-page capture controls the screenshot’s extent; it does not necessarily trigger every piece of page content that appears only after scrolling. A finite page may lazy-load images or sections as they approach the viewport. An infinite feed, by contrast, has no natural final point: new items can keep appearing as you scroll.

For either case, separate the work into two steps: load the content you want by scrolling and waiting, then capture a bounded area. Decide whether the target is a specific item, a number of scroll rounds, or a maximum page height. Sites may load content inside a nested scroll container, require a click, or use custom rendering, so no single full-page option guarantees every feed will be complete.

ScreenshotNeo: first API alternative to try

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API accepts a URL in one GET request and can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For an infinite-scroll page, use it when you want a managed capture workflow rather than maintaining browser automation yourself. Its available options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, waits for a selector, a delay or network idle, and custom JavaScript; a page that continually appends content still needs a practical stopping point.

ScreenshotNeo also accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Responses identify page verdict and billing status, and only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

One-call capture

Replace the example URL with the page you need. Set a height limit or otherwise define the feed extent appropriate to your capture; a request cannot make a literally endless feed finite.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The API supports full-page capture, CSS-selector element capture, viewport and device settings, scroll-related waits, custom CSS and JavaScript, and output controls. For infinite feeds, the important practical question is how far the page should load before capture, not just which image format to return.

ScreenshotNeo has a free plan with 1,000 shots per month and no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Playwright: automate scrolling, then capture

Playwright documents full-page screenshots with fullPage: true, which captures the full scrollable page as if it were displayed on a very tall screen. That option concerns screenshot extent; for scroll-triggered content, explicitly scroll and wait before capturing. The example below uses a maximum number of scroll rounds as a stopping rule. Adjust the scroll distance and wait for the target site; confirm the last intended item is present before relying on the image.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 } });

  await page.goto('https://example.com/feed', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });

  const maxRounds = 20;
  const pauseMs = 800;
  for (let i = 0; i < maxRounds; i++) {
    await page.evaluate(() => window.scrollTo(0, document.body.scrollHeight));
    await page.waitForTimeout(pauseMs);
  }

  await page.screenshot({ path: 'feed.png', fullPage: true });
  await browser.close();
})();

This is a bounded starting pattern, not a universal infinite-scroll detector. A page that needs a click, has a nested scrolling panel, or signals loading in a particular element may require page-specific logic. Prefer a semantic stop condition—such as the appearance of a target item or an end marker—when the page exposes one; retain a maximum round count or height as a fallback.

Puppeteer: the same distinction applies

If you are staying with Puppeteer, its screenshot options include fullPage and captureBeyondViewport. These control what area is captured; neither option establishes that dynamically appended feed content has loaded. Drive the page to the desired content and wait before calling Page.screenshot(). Puppeteer also documents screenshots of an element, which can be useful when the desired result is a feed panel rather than the entire document.

The same bounded scrolling approach shown for Playwright can be adapted to Puppeteer’s page evaluation and wait APIs. Use a selector or other page-specific condition where possible, and avoid an unbounded loop: a continually loading feed can otherwise keep the job running without reaching a final screenshot.

ScreenshotOne: managed scrolling controls

ScreenshotOne documents full_page=true and says full-page scrolling is enabled by default in that mode to request and render lazy-loaded content. Its options include a scroll step, delay and maximum image height. It also documents section-based capture, which scrolls and captures successive page sections; its guide notes that smaller sections can prompt more lazy-loaded content at the cost of additional time. These are vendor-documented capabilities, not a like-for-like independent performance comparison.

ScreenshotOne’s changelog, published December 3, 2024, describes a change to its scrolling routine intended to improve rendering on lazy-loaded and infinite-scroll pages. The same entry says some individual URLs may still need troubleshooting. Treat the controls as ways to tune a capture, not as a guarantee that every site’s interaction or loading behavior is handled automatically.

GoFullPage: a browser-extension option

GoFullPage’s official FAQ describes the extension as capturing an entire webpage being viewed in the browser. It may request Downloads permission for download features and iframe permission to scroll iframe or frameset content. The FAQ does not establish how it handles feeds that append content without end, so check the result on the particular page rather than assuming every new item will be included.

Choose by workflow and page behavior

Option Best fit Infinite-scroll considerations
ScreenshotNeo Managed API or MCP-based capture Offers full-page capture, waits and custom JavaScript; define the desired extent of a feed.
Playwright Developers who want programmable browser automation Full-page capture is documented; implement scrolling and a stopping rule for dynamic content.
Puppeteer Projects already using its browser automation fullPage and captureBeyondViewport affect capture extent, not feed loading.
ScreenshotOne Managed API with documented scroll tuning Documents scroll step, delay, section-based capture and a maximum height.
GoFullPage Capturing a page in a browser without writing automation Its reviewed FAQ does not establish behavior on feeds that load indefinitely.

There is no like-for-like independent benchmark here to rank these options by speed, image quality or universal compatibility. Choose based on whether you need code or an extension, whether you can actively scroll before capture, whether loading depends on viewport entry or interaction, and whether you need one tall image or section-based output.

A reliable workflow for an infinite-scroll capture

  1. Define the endpoint. Choose a target item, maximum number of scroll rounds, maximum height or another clear bound. For a finite lazy-loaded page, identify the final section you intend to include.
  2. Scroll deliberately. Move by a distance suited to the page rather than jumping immediately to the bottom. If content loads only when it enters the viewport, incremental scrolling gives it that opportunity.
  3. Wait and verify. Pause after each movement long enough for the page’s next content to render. Check that the intended final item or section is present before capture.
  4. Capture the bounded result. Use full-page mode for the loaded document, an element capture for a particular panel, or a service’s section-based method if that better fits the page.
  5. Inspect the output. Look for missing sections, repeated content, clipped edges or a blank result. Adjust the scroll routine, wait condition, step size or bound based on the symptom.

Troubleshooting missed or incomplete content

  • New items are missing: the screenshot may have been taken before the feed loaded them. Scroll in increments, wait after each one and verify the desired content before capture.
  • The capture stops too early: increase the chosen scroll bound or height limit only as far as needed. If the page has an end marker or target item, use that as the stop condition.
  • The page never finishes loading: an infinite feed may not have a natural completion signal. Use a hard limit such as rounds or height so capture remains bounded.
  • Scrolling the document does nothing: the feed may live in a nested scroll container or require an interaction. Identify the actual scrolling element and drive it, or perform the page’s required action before waiting for content.
  • Lazy images are blank: confirm the image elements have entered the viewport and allow time for rendering. For ScreenshotOne, its documented scroll step and delay can be tuned; its section-based approach may help expose more lazy content, though it can take longer.
  • The capture is unexpectedly huge or slow: reduce the extent by setting a clear stopping point or maximum height. Capturing more sections and allowing more load time can increase completion time.
  • An extension omits frames: GoFullPage’s FAQ notes iframe or frameset scrolling may require iframe permission. Check the extension’s permissions and inspect the particular page’s output.

Cost and reliability considerations

For browser automation, the main operational burden is maintaining the browser workflow and its page-specific scroll and wait logic. For a managed API, compare the available controls with the site’s loading behavior and set a finite capture extent. Endless feeds can consume time and produce impractically tall images, so a target item, maximum height or round limit is useful whichever method you choose.
