How to create and end a YouTube live poll
YouTube’s poll controls are part of Live Chat. Start or open your stream or Premiere and use the chat window; the exact steps depend on whether you are using a computer or the YouTube app. The instructions below reflect YouTube Help as accessed October 3, 2026; interface labels may change.
On a computer
- Open the chat window for your live stream or Premiere.
- Select Create a poll and enter the question and choices in the poll composer.
- When you want to close voting, select End poll in the banner at the top of chat.
YouTube says the poll results appear in chat after you end the poll. Its computer instructions do not establish a separate results export or a setting to schedule when results appear.

- Sign in to the YouTube app and start a live stream.
- In the chat window, tap Add, then Create a poll.
- When you are ready to show the results, tap End poll in the banner at the top of chat.
YouTube’s Android instructions describe creating the poll from a live stream. If a control is missing from your chat, check the controls available on your own account rather than assuming every account or region has identical access.
Write a poll that makes viewers part of the stream
A poll is more useful when it gives viewers a real, limited choice than when it asks for a reaction that has no effect. YouTube Help suggests letting the audience choose what you will do next, using a gameplay decision as an example. The same approach can suit a stream about another topic: ask viewers which of two subjects to cover next, or which demonstrated option to revisit. These are hosting ideas, not additional YouTube features.

- Make the choices distinct. Keep the wording short enough to scan and avoid options that overlap.
- Ask at the decision point. Tie the question to what viewers have just seen or what you are about to do.
- Only offer choices you can act on. If you cannot follow the outcome, explain the constraint before asking.
- Close the poll when the decision is useful. YouTube’s documented workflow lets the creator end it from the chat banner; the cited instructions do not specify a poll-duration setting.
- Connect the result to what happens next. Read the outcome aloud, say what you will do, and then follow through where practical.
A simple hosting rhythm is to state the choice, leave a brief moment for votes, end the poll, and respond to the outcome. That is practical advice for keeping the stream coherent, not a required YouTube sequence.
Polls, Live Chat and Live Q&A are different
A poll gathers structured choices. Ordinary Live Chat lets viewers send open-ended messages, while Live Q&A is a separate way to collect and select viewer questions for an answer. Use a poll when you need a quick choice, chat for conversation, and Q&A when the stream is taking questions.

Live Chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not in embedded players. YouTube also documents a chat-message limit of up to 11 messages every 30 seconds and a maximum of 200 characters per message. These limits apply to chat messages; they are not stated poll-vote limits. Subscribers-only chat can also limit access to some Live Chat features.
Keep the chat usable as voting happens
For a stream with active discussion, plan moderation alongside the poll. YouTube recommends assigning moderators and documents controls for managing live chat. A poll itself does not require a moderator, but a trusted moderator can help keep the surrounding conversation manageable while you host.

Do not treat the poll as a substitute for moderation or as a guarantee that every viewer can participate. The YouTube Help pages cited here do not establish a universal eligibility matrix, option-count limit, vote-change rule, demographic breakdown, or persistent poll analytics specification. Check the controls shown in your own chat if an expected feature is absent.
What poll results can—and cannot—tell you
A poll shows a choice made by viewers who participated in that poll; it is not, by itself, evidence of a particular engagement lift, improved watch time, audience retention, or growth. The YouTube Help material cited here provides qualitative guidance, not a named statistic measuring those outcomes. Use results to guide the next moment of your own stream, not as a standalone performance metric.
