None of these changes guarantees nonstop uptime: test the complete setup and plan for power, heat, sleep settings, and recovery. If you are looping prerecorded video rather than streaming a live camera or gameplay, a cloud service may avoid keeping a PC running at all.
First decide whether Streamlabs Desktop fits the job
Streamlabs Desktop is a desktop production path: the computer must render the scene and encode the video while the stream is live. That is different from looping prerecorded video in the cloud, and from a live production with a camera or gameplay source. A lower-end PC may manage a simple scene at reduced settings, but its minimum requirements are not a promise of reliable 24/7 operation.

Check your PC and workload
Before changing settings, note your Windows or macOS version, RAM, CPU, graphics hardware, intended content, and applications that will run alongside Streamlabs. A static image and audio place different demands on a machine than moving gameplay, multiple video sources, animated overlays, or plugins. Streamlabs says requirements vary with content and concurrent applications.
Streamlabs’ official guidance is not fully consistent. Its system requirements page, dated April 25, 2025 with page metadata indicating an April 8, 2026 update, lists Windows 10 or macOS 12 and 8 GB RAM as minimums. Its July 2026 getting-started guide lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 and integrated graphics as minimum graphics detail. Treat these as rough compatibility guidance, not a nonstop-stream specification, and check the current installer and documentation for your operating system.

The requirements page lists a recommended configuration of 16 GB or more RAM, a 512 GB SSD or larger, an Intel Core i5 11th/12th generation or higher or AMD Ryzen 5000 series or higher, and NVIDIA RTX 20/30 or AMD RX 5000/6000 series graphics. Do not buy hardware solely because you are below that recommendation: first identify whether your actual bottleneck is CPU, GPU, memory, or connection stability.
Lower the video workload before changing everything else
Set a manageable output resolution and frame rate
- In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings > Video.
- Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution at your monitor’s native resolution, as Streamlabs recommends.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to the resolution you intend to stream. Streamlabs identifies 720p as a good balance in its getting-started guide; it also notes that 1080p requires more performance than 720p.
- If the PC or connection struggles, try 30 fps rather than 60 fps, then test with the same content and scene you plan to use live.
Lower output resolution and frame rate reduce what the system must produce and send. The trade-off is less detail or motion smoothness, so choose the highest setting that stays stable in a representative test rather than chasing the maximum.

Choose an encoder based on which processor has room
Streamlabs distinguishes x264, which encodes on the CPU, from NVENC, which uses a dedicated NVIDIA GPU encoder. If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, Streamlabs recommends NVENC New as a starting point. That is not a universal fix: if the GPU is already saturated by a game or other work, moving encoding to it may not help. Compare CPU and GPU load during a test, and keep the encoder that produces stable output on your specific machine.
Simplify scenes and other running work
Remove sources you do not need, reduce animated overlays, and disable advanced plugins that are not part of the show. Close other applications that are not required while streaming. The benefit depends on the PC and workload; these are sensible ways to reduce competing work, not guaranteed performance gains.

Match YouTube bitrate to the selected output
YouTube’s current H.264 encoder table recommends the following bitrates. The figures below are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular PC or connection can sustain them.

In Streamlabs, set the video bitrate to suit your chosen resolution and frame rate, then use YouTube’s live encoder settings table for current H.264 recommendations and other codec details. YouTube recommends CBR (constant bitrate) and a 2-second keyframe interval. Avoid raising bitrate simply because your connection’s advertised speed looks high: bitrate has to fit your real available upload capacity.

Check upload stability, not just the speed-test headline
Measure upload speed and test at the time and from the place you will stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth as room above the stream bitrate; a shared connection can also limit what the individual stream gets, even when the overall plan is described as high-speed. - Use wired Ethernet when available, especially if Wi-Fi is inconsistent. Streamlabs recommends Ethernet; a cable can make the local link more reliable, but it does not increase the bandwidth supplied by your ISP.
- Choose settings that leave the recommended upload headroom rather than using all measured capacity.
- If YouTube’s stream-health status reports network issues, first try lowering bitrate or improving connection stability. The exact diagnosis depends on the displayed status and logs.
Test the whole stream before relying on it
Run a representative private or unlisted test
Test the same resolution, frame rate, audio, movement, overlays, and typical simultaneous workload you expect during the real stream. Watch Streamlabs’ resource use and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. If frames are skipped, reduce output or other system load; if YouTube reports network issues, lower bitrate or address connection stability. Treat these as diagnostic directions, not definitive interpretations of every error.

Check audio, preview, and any local recording
YouTube advises setting up in advance, starting the encoder early, checking the preview, confirming the stream is accessible, and continuously monitoring audio and video. If you record a local archive, check that it is growing and that the file is intact. The YouTube streaming tips recommend preparing at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes early. Those are preparation recommendations, not proof that a PC will remain online indefinitely.
Make a continuous-operation plan
For a long run, use a representative long test and check that operating-system sleep or power-saving settings will not stop the stream. Keep the PC ventilated, decide how you will notice a failure, and know how you will restart the encoder and verify the stream again. These are operational precautions; the cited guidance does not establish an uptime guarantee for a particular computer.
When the content is prerecorded, consider a cloud loop
If your plan is to loop uploaded, prerecorded video rather than produce a live camera or gameplay stream, keeping a low-end PC awake may be unnecessary. YouTube’s verified encoder list describes Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded video streams without a dedicated PC. That is a different workflow from Streamlabs Desktop and does not address live production. YouTube also lists OBS Studio as free open-source recording and streaming software, but the cited source does not establish that switching desktop encoders will use fewer resources on your particular PC.

Common problems and what to try
- Streamlabs becomes overloaded or skips frames: lower Output (Scaled) Resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, close unnecessary applications, and compare CPU and GPU load before changing encoders.
- YouTube reports network trouble: lower bitrate to match stable upload capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom, and test Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unreliable.
- NVENC does not improve stability: check whether the GPU is already busy. NVENC uses the dedicated NVIDIA encoder, but an overloaded GPU can remain the limiting part of the system.
- The stream stops after the PC is left alone: check sleep and power settings, temperature and ventilation, and your restart procedure. A desktop setup still depends on the PC and its connection operating continuously.
- You cannot start a first YouTube live stream: consult YouTube’s encoder setup page; first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours.
