There is no single public stock that duplicates SpaceX. The closest choice depends on which part of the space economy you want: Rocket Lab for launch and spacecraft systems, AST SpaceMobile for direct-to-phone connectivity, Planet Labs for Earth-observation data, Intuitive Machines for lunar infrastructure, or Virgin Galactic for human spaceflight. These companies differ sharply in execution stage, customer mix, recurring revenue, capital requirements and dilution risk, so “best” is an exposure decision rather than a universal ranking.

This guide compares those businesses using issuer disclosures available through 2026. It is educational information, not individualized investment advice. Space stocks can lose substantial value when a mission slips, a contract is delayed, financing is required or a planned service fails to commercialize.

What you are actually buying when you choose a public space stock

SpaceX combines launch, spacecraft, satellite communications and human-spaceflight ambitions inside one private company. Public alternatives usually offer only one or two of those activities. A stock can therefore give you economic exposure to a space theme without reproducing SpaceX’s scale, integration, operating history or financing capacity.

The practical way to compare candidates is to ask five questions:

#1 Best Overall
Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter | 4Pack Type C Female to A Male Cable Converter for Apple Duo 17 16 15 14 Plus,iWatch Watch 12 11 10,iPad 9 8 Air,Airpods 5 4
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Exposure: Is the company selling launches, spacecraft hardware, connectivity, imagery, lunar services or passenger flights?
  • Execution stage: Is it delivering an operating service, completing missions, building a constellation or waiting for a future vehicle?
  • Customer mix: How much demand comes from commercial customers, telecom operators, civil agencies or national-security programs?
  • Revenue quality: Does revenue recur from subscriptions and infrastructure services, or arrive as project milestones and hardware deliveries?
  • Capital risk: Can the company fund its plan from operations, or might it need debt or new equity that dilutes shareholders?

No common valuation date or consistent valuation metric is established for all five companies in the available disclosures. It would be misleading to name one as the cheapest or safest without using the same market date, share count, forecast period and accounting measure.

Public space stocks at a glance

Company Ticker Primary exposure Stage and revenue profile What to investigate
Rocket Lab NASDAQ: RKLB Launch services, spacecraft, components and space systems Operating launch-and-systems business; mix of mission and systems revenue Launch cadence, systems backlog, customer concentration, margins and funding for expansion
AST SpaceMobile NASDAQ: ASTS Direct-to-cellular satellite connectivity Commercialization and service availability remain execution questions; announced agreements are not proof of operating revenue Satellite deployment, regulatory approvals, telecom economics, service start and cash needs
Planet Labs NYSE: PL Earth-observation imagery and data Data business serving commercial and government users; recurring characteristics depend on customer contracts Retention, contract duration, government concentration, cash generation and dilution
Intuitive Machines NASDAQ: LUNR Lunar delivery, spacecraft and space-infrastructure services Project awards today with a stated “build, connect, operate” strategy intended to create longer-duration and recurring services Backlog conversion, mission execution, contract economics, cash burn and share issuance
Virgin Galactic NYSE: SPCE Human spaceflight Distinct from launch-to-orbit, satellite connectivity and Earth-imaging businesses; future vehicle and flight execution are central Vehicle development, flight schedule, reservations, cash runway and financing requirements

The table is a map, not a performance ranking. A company can be attractive for one portfolio objective and unsuitable for another.

Rocket Lab: the broadest launch-and-space-systems exposure in this group

What the business represents

Rocket Lab combines launch services with spacecraft, components and broader space-systems work. That makes it different from a launch-only investment: a successful mission is only one part of the business, while spacecraft and component contracts can provide additional revenue streams.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why investors may choose it

  • It offers exposure to both getting payloads into orbit and supplying the hardware that operates there.
  • A systems business can potentially serve customers even when launch timing changes, although the available evidence does not establish a particular revenue split or margin profile.
  • Its customer set can span commercial and government missions, so investors should examine how concentrated each contract or program is.

Risks to test

Launch is schedule-sensitive and capital-intensive. Review mission outcomes, order backlog, contract terms, production capacity, cash balances and any equity or debt financing. The available material does not provide a current valuation, revenue total or cash-runway figure for Rocket Lab; those cells should be filled from the latest filing before making a purchase decision rather than inferred from the company’s space-sector profile.

AST SpaceMobile: a direct-to-phone connectivity bet

What the business represents

AST SpaceMobile is developing satellite connectivity intended to connect directly with ordinary cellular devices. Its investment case is therefore tied to building and operating a constellation, obtaining regulatory permissions, integrating with telecom partners and converting announced relationships into paying service.

Execution questions that matter

  1. Check which satellites are in orbit and operating, not merely announced or planned.
  2. Separate a memorandum, commercial agreement or planned launch from recognized service revenue.
  3. Read partner terms for exclusivity, geographic coverage, pricing, revenue sharing and minimum commitments.
  4. Track the cash required for satellite production, launches, ground infrastructure and customer integration.
  5. Look for evidence that users can obtain reliable service at commercially viable economics.

An announced agreement or planned service start is not proof of operating revenue. Availability, coverage and commercialization remain execution questions, so this stock has a different risk profile from an established data subscription business.

Planet Labs: Earth-observation data with a clearer operating-revenue base

What the business represents

Planet Labs sells Earth-observation imagery and data to business and government customers. Customers may use that information for monitoring, mapping, agriculture, infrastructure, environmental analysis or public-sector decisions; the specific use case and contract structure determine how recurring the revenue is.

Reported operating figures

Planet Labs PBC’s investor-relations page reported $116.1 million of Q2 2026 revenue, up 58% year over year. The same 2026 disclosure reported approximately $120 million raised through its at-the-market program. Those are issuer-reported figures for the stated quarter and financing program, not a forecast of future growth or a guarantee that the shares will appreciate.

How to analyze the data model

  • Determine how much revenue is recurring subscription or data access versus one-time projects.
  • Check renewal rates, contract length and the distribution of revenue between commercial and government customers.
  • Assess whether new satellite capacity and analytics investment are producing higher revenue per customer.
  • Account for the effect of the at-the-market issuance on share count and per-share ownership.
  • Compare cash generation with the cost of maintaining and replacing the satellite fleet.

Planet can suit an investor who prefers a space application that sells information rather than launch capacity. It is still exposed to government budgets, customer concentration, satellite replacement and dilution, so “data” should not be treated as synonymous with low risk.

Intuitive Machines: lunar delivery and infrastructure with substantial disclosed momentum

What the business represents

Intuitive Machines provides lunar delivery, spacecraft and space-infrastructure services. Its 2025 Form 10-K describes a “build, connect, operate” model intended to move from individual hardware and delivery projects toward longer-duration contracts and recurring services.

Q2 2026 figures and awards

In its Q2 2026 results release, Intuitive Machines reported:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Measure Issuer-reported result Qualification
Quarterly revenue $206 million Q2 2026 result reported by Intuitive Machines
Cash $367 million Quarter-end Q2 2026 balance reported by the issuer
Backlog $1.8 billion Quarter-end Q2 2026 backlog; backlog is not the same as recognized revenue or profit
Full-year revenue guidance $900 million–$1 billion 2026 guidance issued by the company; actual results can differ
Adjusted EBITDA Positive guidance Company guidance; adjusted EBITDA is not a substitute for cash flow or GAAP profit

The same release said the company booked $920 million of Q2 awards, signed a contract worth more than $600 million for three commercial geostationary-orbit satellites, received an additional NASA Commercial Lunar Payload Services lander contract and expanded national-security revenue to 30% of Q2 revenue, from 3% a year earlier. These are issuer-reported awards and mix figures. They do not guarantee delivery, recognized revenue, margin or cash generation.

Interpreting backlog and the strategy

Backlog can indicate contracted demand, but investors must inspect cancellation rights, milestones, customer funding, performance obligations, delivery dates and expected margins. A large award may require substantial spending before payment, and a contract can be delayed or renegotiated.

Chief executive Steve Altemus said in the Q2 2026 results release: “We believe the next era of space will require a next-generation space prime, capable of building spacecraft, connecting them through resilient networks, and operating the resulting infrastructure across civil, commercial, and national security markets.” The statement describes management’s strategy; it is not independent confirmation that the strategy will produce recurring profit.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Why this may fit some portfolios

  • It offers exposure across lunar delivery, spacecraft and infrastructure rather than a single mission type.
  • The reported backlog, cash balance, awards and 2026 guidance provide more dated operating data than is available for some early-stage space businesses.
  • Growing national-security work could diversify customers, although a 30% quarterly mix also means government-program execution matters materially.

Key risks include mission failure, contract timing, cost overruns, working-capital needs and dilution. Treat the company’s guidance and backlog as scenarios to monitor, not as guaranteed outcomes.

Virgin Galactic: human spaceflight is a separate investment category

What the business represents

Virgin Galactic provides exposure to human spaceflight. That is fundamentally different from launch-to-orbit services, satellite connectivity, Earth-imaging data and lunar infrastructure. Demand depends on passenger interest, safety, regulatory approval, vehicle availability, flight cadence and pricing.

Questions before considering the stock

  • What vehicle is expected to fly, and what milestones remain before regular commercial operations?
  • How many flights can the system perform, and what maintenance interval and turnaround assumptions support that schedule?
  • What reservations or deposits are currently disclosed, and when could they become recognized revenue?
  • How much cash is available for development and operations, and how likely is additional financing?
  • What safety, insurance and regulatory obligations could change the cost structure?

Human-spaceflight excitement does not remove development risk. Do not compare Virgin Galactic’s future passenger model with a data company’s recurring contracts as though they were equivalent revenue streams.

How to compare execution stage instead of headlines

Operating service versus planned milestone

Classify every claim in a company presentation into one of four states: operating and generating revenue; contracted but not yet delivered; announced or planned; or technically possible but uncommitted. Only the first category demonstrates current service revenue. The second can support future revenue but remains subject to delivery and contract conditions. The latter two are opportunities, not financial results.

Mission and infrastructure checkpoints

For launch and lunar companies, examine completed missions, anomaly disclosures, customer acceptance and repeatability. For constellation companies, examine satellites deployed, usable coverage, network performance and paying customers. For Earth-observation companies, examine renewals, usage and contract duration. For human-spaceflight companies, examine completed flights, vehicle readiness and regulatory status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Customer mix and contract concentration

Space businesses often sell to a small number of sophisticated customers. A government contract can provide visibility but may depend on annual appropriations, milestones or a single program. A telecom agreement can open a large market while leaving the provider responsible for difficult technical and commercial execution. Commercial customers may diversify demand but can cancel or renegotiate when budgets tighten.

Read filings for the percentage of revenue represented by major customers, the identity of end users, termination clauses, options, funded versus unfunded backlog and the timing of milestone payments. A growing national-security share, such as Intuitive Machines’ reported increase to 30% of Q2 2026 revenue, changes the company’s exposure; it does not automatically make revenue safer.

Recurring revenue, project revenue and cash conversion

Recurring models

Data subscriptions and operated infrastructure can produce repeat billing when customers renew. Analyze retention, expansion, contract duration, service-level obligations and the cost of keeping the network or satellite fleet operational.

Project and milestone models

Launches, spacecraft deliveries and lunar missions often record revenue as engineering or delivery obligations are completed. Revenue can be lumpy, and a single delay can shift a quarter or year. Compare reported revenue with operating cash flow, accounts receivable, contract assets and the cost to complete remaining work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Backlog is not cash

Backlog becomes useful only after you understand when it can be recognized, how profitable it may be and how much capital is needed to deliver it. A company can report a large backlog and still need to raise equity or debt before collecting customer payments.

Capital needs, dilution and balance-sheet checks

Space hardware, launches and constellations require upfront spending. Before buying, review the latest balance sheet and cash-flow statement for:

  • Cash and short-term investments compared with quarterly operating and capital spending.
  • Debt maturities, interest expense, covenants and secured assets.
  • Shares outstanding, options, warrants and recent at-the-market or follow-on offerings.
  • Customer deposits and milestone payments that may reduce or increase working-capital pressure.
  • Capital commitments for satellites, launch vehicles, facilities and research programs.

Planet Labs’ approximately $120 million raised through its 2026 at-the-market program illustrates why financing belongs in a per-share analysis: new capital can fund growth while also increasing the share count. The same principle applies to any company that repeatedly funds development by issuing stock.

A disciplined process for choosing among the stocks

  1. Choose the exposure first. Decide whether you want launch and systems, direct-to-phone connectivity, Earth data, lunar infrastructure or human spaceflight.
  2. Set an execution threshold. Require operating revenue, completed missions, contracted backlog or a defined development milestone, and label anything earlier as speculative.
  3. Map customers and contracts. Identify commercial, telecom, civil-government and national-security customers; note concentration, options, termination rights and funding.
  4. Test revenue quality. Separate recurring subscriptions from one-time hardware, launch and milestone revenue.
  5. Model capital requirements. Estimate the spending needed to reach the next operational milestone and compare it with cash, debt capacity and likely dilution.
  6. Use a common valuation date. Compare enterprise value, revenue, gross profit, free cash flow or another consistent metric using the same date and accounting definitions. Do not mix a historical figure for one company with a current quote for another.
  7. Define failure conditions. Write down what would change your thesis: a missed launch, delayed service, lost contract, lower guidance, financing at a discount or rising cash burn.
  8. Size the position for volatility. A speculative space stock should not be allowed to determine the result of an otherwise diversified portfolio.

Using an ETF instead of selecting one company

The Procure Space ETF (UFO) is a potential basket approach for investors who do not want single-company exposure. A fund can spread company-specific mission and financing risk, but it does not eliminate sector risk or guarantee a profit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying any space-sector ETF, verify its current holdings, expense ratio, liquidity, jurisdiction, index methodology, rebalancing schedule and concentration. Confirm that the fund still owns the types of businesses you want; holdings can change. The available information does not establish that UFO is the best space ETF, so suitability must be judged against your own diversification and risk requirements.

Common mistakes when buying space stocks

Confusing a contract with revenue

An award, memorandum or planned service date can precede delivery by years. Check the revenue-recognition policy, funded amount, milestones and customer acceptance requirements.

Comparing unlike businesses on one headline number

Backlog, quarterly revenue, satellite count and passenger reservations measure different things. Use the metric that matches the company’s business model and pair it with cash needs and dilution.

Ignoring financing risk

Development companies can raise capital repeatedly. Track changes in shares outstanding and per-share ownership, not only the cash added to the balance sheet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating government demand as risk-free

Government programs can be large and strategically important, yet budgets, appropriations, milestones and procurement priorities can change.

Assuming public listing means maturity

A listed stock can still represent a pre-commercial constellation, a future vehicle or a single-program contractor. Public-market access does not make companies equivalent in operating history or scale.

Which type of investor might prefer each exposure?

If your priority is… Exposure to examine Reason and principal caution
A combination of launch and spacecraft systems Rocket Lab Broader operating scope than launch alone; verify execution, margins and funding
Direct connection between satellites and phones AST SpaceMobile High commercialization and constellation-execution risk; agreements are not operating revenue
Earth data sold to business and government users Planet Labs Reported Q2 2026 revenue of $116.1 million and 58% year-over-year growth; assess retention, cash flow and dilution
Lunar delivery and infrastructure Intuitive Machines Reported Q2 2026 revenue, cash, backlog and guidance; assess mission, contract and working-capital risk
Passenger spaceflight Virgin Galactic Distinct human-spaceflight exposure; vehicle development and financing are central risks
Broad basket rather than one issuer Space-sector ETF such as UFO Check holdings, fees, liquidity and concentration; no fund is established here as universally best

Bottom line

The best public alternative to private SpaceX is the stock whose business exposure and execution stage match your risk tolerance—not the company with the most ambitious headline. Rocket Lab is the systems-and-launch option; AST SpaceMobile is a high-risk direct-to-phone commercialization bet; Planet Labs is an Earth-data business with reported operating revenue; Intuitive Machines combines lunar projects with an infrastructure strategy and substantial issuer-reported Q2 2026 backlog; and Virgin Galactic is a separate human-spaceflight speculation. If choosing one company feels too concentrated, investigate a diversified space ETF and verify its current terms. In every case, separate operating results from plans, inspect customer and contract concentration, and model the cash required before treating a space story as an investment thesis.
