Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For most survival RPGs, begin with the PS5 Game Preset set to Performance Mode, use HDR: On When Supported, calibrate HDR on the display you actually use, select the correct audio output and start with a balanced EQ, then reduce DualSense vibration or trigger resistance only if long sessions cause fatigue. These settings are a baseline, not a universal competitive advantage: each game, display, patch and audio setup can change the result.
The right setup balances five competing goals: smooth motion and responsive input, readable dark scenes, visible HDR highlights, clear environmental cues and controls you can use comfortably for hours. The sections below show exactly what to change and how to decide when the default is not working.

1. Choose Performance or Resolution mode first
Open the PS5 home screen and go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets. Set the preference to Performance Mode when the game supports PS5 graphics presets. Sony defines Performance Mode as making motion smoother, while Resolution Mode prioritizes higher graphic quality.

A game must support the preset, and many survival RPGs expose additional choices in their own graphics menu. After launching the game, open its video or graphics options and check whether it offers separate toggles for ray tracing, frame-rate targets, resolution scaling, motion blur, depth of field or field of view.

| Mode | What Sony prioritizes | What you may notice in a survival RPG | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance Mode | Smoother motion | Cleaner camera pans, steadier aiming and faster-feeling movement when the title’s performance target is maintained | You explore, fight, aim or manage a camera constantly, or you are sensitive to judder and input delay |
| Resolution Mode | Higher graphic quality | More detailed distant scenery, sharper image quality and sometimes enhanced lighting or ray tracing | You value visual detail most, play slowly, or the game’s performance mode has distracting compromises |
| Game-specific option | Varies by title | A separate 30/40/60-frame target, ray-tracing toggle or quality slider may change the trade-off | The title provides more controls than the system preset |
How to compare the two modes fairly
- Load the same save in the same area, preferably one with foliage, weather, enemies and an indoor transition.
- Move the camera slowly across vertical edges such as trees, buildings and fences. Look for judder, shimmer and unstable detail.
- Perform a quick turn, sprint, aim and inventory interaction. Judge camera smoothness and input response rather than still screenshots.
- Inspect distant textures, character faces, shadows and lighting. Resolution Mode may look better when you stand still, while Performance Mode can look clearer during movement.
- Keep the mode that makes the actions you repeat most comfortable. Do not select Resolution Mode solely because a menu screenshot looks sharper.
There is no universal FPS, latency or image-quality figure for survival RPGs. Patches can change frame-rate behavior, and a display’s response characteristics influence how each mode feels. Recheck the graphics menu after major updates.
2. Set HDR for your actual TV or monitor
On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. For the safest general setting, choose HDR: On When Supported. This allows HDR-capable games and video to use HDR while leaving SDR content in SDR. Always On converts SDR output through the console’s HDR pipeline and can produce a different, sometimes less natural, appearance depending on the display.
Run Adjust HDR after connecting the PS5 to the display and whenever you change to a different television, monitor or HDMI input. The calibration is display-dependent: peak brightness, black level, tone mapping and the room’s ambient light all affect what you can see. A setting that looks correct on a bright living-room television may crush shadows on a dim monitor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHDR calibration procedure
- Set the display to its game picture mode if it has one. Disable extra processing that changes brightness while you calibrate, such as an automatic energy-saving picture mode.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR.
- Follow all three calibration screens. Adjust until the symbol is barely visible as instructed by the console; do not raise brightness simply to make every dark detail obvious.
- Return to the game and inspect a bright sky, a lamp or fire, a shaded doorway and a night scene. If highlights clip into a flat white area or shadows become a featureless black mass, revisit the display’s tone-mapping or brightness controls before changing the game’s exposure.
- Recheck after changing the room lighting. A dark-room calibration can make daytime play look too dim, while a bright-room setting can wash out nighttime scenes.
On When Supported versus Always On
- On When Supported: the conservative baseline for a mixed library of HDR and SDR games. SDR titles remain SDR.
- Always On: useful only if you prefer the display’s treatment of all content through one HDR pipeline and have verified that SDR games do not look gray, over-bright or color-shifted.
HDR is not guaranteed by the console alone. 4K output, HDR, variable refresh rate (VRR), auto low-latency mode (ALLM) and 120 Hz operation depend on the connected display, HDMI cable path, receiver or soundbar and the game. If a 4K picture flickers, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and try Video Transfer Rate: -1 or -2 to limit the output bandwidth. This can restore stability, but it may change which combinations of resolution, HDR and refresh rate are available.

Dark-scene checks for survival games
- Look for texture in a cave wall or unlit room instead of lifting the entire black level until the scene turns gray.
- Check that a torch, muzzle flash or sunrise retains a bright center and visible color rather than becoming a white blob.
- Use the game’s own brightness or paper-white control after PS5 HDR calibration. Change one control at a time so you know which setting caused the improvement.
- Turn off any dynamic contrast or black-level enhancer that hides detail by altering the image scene by scene.
3. Make footsteps, wildlife and dialogue easier to hear
Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the output device you are actually using: television speakers, an AV system, USB headset or compatible wireless headset. Confirm that the console is not routing sound to a disconnected controller or another device.
Core audio settings
- Choose the correct Output Device under Audio Output.
- For headphones, choose what is sent to the headphones, then set the appropriate audio format offered by your setup.
- Start with the game’s balanced or default mix. Survival RPGs often combine low-frequency ambience, combat effects, music, voice lines and quiet environmental signals; a heavily boosted bass profile can mask footsteps and rustling vegetation.
- Test the available headphone EQ presets. Sony lists Standard, Bass Boost and Shooter options. Standard is the neutral starting point; Bass Boost is the least suitable first choice when environmental detail is already hard to hear.
- Adjust the game’s separate sliders for dialogue, effects, music and ambience if they exist. Lower music before making every effect excessively loud.
Use Audio Focus when subtle cues disappear
PlayStation’s Audio Focus feature provides presets intended to make specific sounds easier to distinguish. The PlayStation Blog describes clearer in-game character dialogue, subtle effects such as footsteps and rustling grass, and voices in party chat. The feature offers Weak, Medium and Strong levels.
- Open the PS5 sound settings and locate Audio Focus if it is available on your system software and output device.
- Select the frequency or preset that best matches the sound you are missing, then begin with Weak.
- Replay a reliable test: walk, crouch, rotate near foliage, trigger a conversation and listen during combat.
- Increase to Medium only if the cue remains masked. Use Strong when you need the greatest separation and accept that the mix may sound less natural.
Audio Focus does not create information that the game never mixes into its soundtrack. If a title compresses or suppresses environmental effects, adjust its own audio sliders first. Also remember that footsteps may be intentionally quiet, directional or dependent on the surface beneath a character.

Headphone and television troubleshooting
- Dialogue is quiet but explosions are loud: lower effects or music in the game, then raise dialogue; do not solve the imbalance with a blanket volume increase.
- Footsteps are buried in bass: return to Standard EQ, reduce subwoofer or bass output and test Audio Focus at Weak.
- Sound comes from the wrong device: revisit Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the current device explicitly.
- Party chat masks the game: rebalance chat and game audio in the console’s voice controls, then use Audio Focus only if game cues themselves remain unclear.
- Audio is delayed: disable unnecessary television processing and check the display or receiver’s game mode. A console EQ cannot correct a display-induced delay.
4. Configure DualSense controls for long sessions
Open Settings > Accessibility > Controllers. The PS5 lets you change DualSense button assignments, vibration intensity and adaptive-trigger intensity. The best setting depends on how often the game asks you to sprint, crouch, aim, craft, open a radial menu or perform repeated harvesting actions.

Button assignments and layout
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Controllers and choose the custom button assignment option.
- Map the action you use most often to a button that does not force your thumb to leave the right stick. In a combat-heavy game, that may be sprint, crouch or a melee action; in a crafting-heavy game, it may be the inventory or quick-menu command.
- Write down the change before launching the game. A remap affects the system-level meaning of the button, while on-screen prompts may still show the game’s original labels.
- Test every essential action in a safe area: jump or vault, interact, reload, dodge, crouch, sprint, open inventory and confirm or cancel menus.
Many titles also offer their own layout choices, toggle-versus-hold behavior, aim sensitivity, camera sensitivity and accessibility options. Prefer the game’s setting when you need a context-specific behavior, such as sprint toggle only while exploring. Use the system remap for a consistent physical layout across games.
Vibration and adaptive triggers
| Setting | Keep it high when | Reduce it when | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vibration intensity | Haptic pulses help you notice attacks, weather, machinery or tool feedback | Repeated harvesting, driving or combat vibrations cause hand fatigue or distract from audio cues | Less physical feedback and potentially lower distraction |
| Adaptive-trigger intensity | Trigger resistance communicates weapon state, stamina or tool tension without slowing you down | Frequent aiming, firing or harvesting makes the trigger effort tiring | Lighter trigger pulls; the game’s visual and audio feedback remain available |
Do not disable every haptic effect automatically. Keep a low or medium level if the pulses help you identify a blocked action or incoming hazard, then lower only the effect that causes fatigue. Reduced intensity can also help conserve controller battery during long sessions, although the exact saving varies with the game and usage.
DualSense Edge profiles
If you use a DualSense Edge, save a dedicated profile for the survival RPG. Store the button assignments, stick sensitivity and deadzone settings you have tested. A profile lets you recall the same setup rather than rebuilding it after a reset or switching games.
Recommended Free Tools
- Use a smaller right-stick deadzone only when the stick is stable. Too small a value can produce camera drift.
- Increase sensitivity gradually; high sensitivity can speed up turns but make fine aiming and menu selection harder.
- Use the profile’s back buttons for actions that otherwise require removing your thumb from the camera stick, but avoid assigning a command you may press accidentally while gripping the controller.
5. Tune camera, aiming and movement inside the game
System settings cannot compensate for a title-specific camera that is too fast, too slow or constantly fighting you. In the game’s controls menu, adjust one variable at a time and test it in the same area.

- A gaming icon in your hands - Enjoy a comfortable, evolved design with an iconic layout and enhanced sticks. Hear higher-fidelity** sound effects through the built-in speaker in supported games.
Recommended test sequence
- Set horizontal and vertical camera sensitivity to the game’s midpoint.
- Turn while walking, then while sprinting. If the camera overshoots, lower sensitivity; if turning feels laborious, raise it in small steps.
- Test aim sensitivity separately from camera sensitivity. A fast exploration camera and a slower aiming speed are often easier to control than one value for both.
- Choose toggle or hold for sprint, crouch, aim and interaction based on duration. Toggle reduces sustained finger pressure; hold can prevent accidental activation when the game uses the same button for multiple contexts.
- Check camera acceleration, aim assist, motion blur and camera shake. Disable or reduce effects that make long traversal sequences uncomfortable.
Deadzone settings deserve special attention. A deadzone that is too large makes the character or camera feel unresponsive around center; one that is too small reveals stick drift. Start with the game’s default, then change it only when you can identify a consistent problem.

| Player priority | PS5 baseline | First in-game adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Combat and exploration | Performance Mode; HDR On When Supported; Standard EQ | Raise or lower camera and aim sensitivity independently; keep vibration moderate |
| Story and visual detail | Compare Resolution Mode directly with Performance Mode; calibrate HDR carefully | Keep Resolution Mode if motion remains comfortable and detail is your priority |
| Night-scene visibility | On When Supported; complete Adjust HDR on the actual display | Use the game’s brightness control and inspect black detail without lifting the whole image |
| Environmental awareness | Correct output device; Standard EQ; Audio Focus Weak | Increase Audio Focus only after lowering music or excessive bass |
| Fatigue-sensitive sessions | Performance Mode; lower vibration and adaptive triggers | Use sprint and crouch toggles where available; save a controller profile |
7. Fix common problems in the right order
The game looks sharp but movement feels uncomfortable
Switch to Performance Mode in the game’s graphics menu, then compare the same camera movement. If the title offers a separate motion-blur or camera-shake control, reduce those effects. Do not assume a sharper still image means a better experience during play.
HDR makes caves too dark
Run Adjust HDR again with the display in its game picture mode. Check the display’s tone-mapping and black-level settings, then use the game’s brightness control for the final adjustment. Avoid raising brightness until every shadow is gray; darkness may be intentional, but crushed texture is not.
4K output flickers
Confirm the HDMI path and display input support the chosen mode. In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, try Video Transfer Rate -1, then -2 if necessary. Recheck which combination of 4K, HDR, VRR and 120 Hz remains available after the change.
Best Value
- Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions through haptic feedback
- Experience varying levels of force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone and connect a headset directly through the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
- Play on more devices using the USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth to connect easily to Windows PC and Mac computers, Android and iOS mobile phones as well as your PlayStation 5
Footsteps are still hard to locate
Confirm the output device, return to Standard EQ, reduce bass and music, and test Audio Focus at Weak or Medium. Verify that the game is not using a cinematic or low-effects mix. Headphone placement and room noise can also obscure direction, so test in a quiet environment before changing more settings.
Your hands hurt after repeated actions
Lower vibration and adaptive-trigger intensity under Settings > Accessibility > Controllers. Change sprint, crouch or aim from hold to toggle if the game supports it, remap a frequently used action to a more accessible button and save the configuration as a controller profile when available.
8. Recheck settings after hardware or software changes
Repeat the setup whenever you change the TV, monitor, HDMI receiver, headset, controller profile or room lighting. A display change can alter HDR calibration and available refresh-rate features; a headset change can make a bass-heavy EQ unsuitable; and a game patch can alter its graphics modes or audio mix.
Keep a short note of the settings that worked: Performance or Resolution, HDR mode, the date of HDR calibration, audio output and EQ, Audio Focus level, sensitivity, deadzone and haptic intensity. That record makes troubleshooting faster when a title update or new display changes the way the game feels.
