Best PS5 and Xbox Series X|S Audio Settings for Open-World Games

The best setting is the one that matches your listening device. On PS5, use 3D Audio for Headphones with compatible headphones; for a soundbar or AV receiver, select the correct HDMI device type and choose Dolby Atmos only when the entire HDMI chain supports it. On Xbox Series X|S, select Dolby Atmos, DTS:X or Windows Sonic according to your headset or HDMI system. In the game, begin with a balanced, immersive or home-theater mix, keep effects and dialogue ahead of music, and enable night compression only when you need smaller volume swings.

Quick-start settings by listening device

Use this table as a starting point, then make one change at a time while listening in the same area of an open-world game. Menu names vary by title, but the platform paths below are the documented controls for each console.

Compatible headphones on PS5 Enable 3D Audio for Headphones; adjust the profile Headphone or binaural option, if the game provides one Use a different profile or the game’s standard stereo option if voices or ambience become less clear
TV speakers on PS5 Set HDMI Device Type to the connected TV and use the format the TV accepts Balanced or immersive Choose night or reduced-dynamic-range mode for late listening
Soundbar or AV receiver on PS5 Set HDMI Device Type to match the equipment; choose Dolby Atmos only with a compatible HDMI chain Home-theater or surround Check the TV or receiver if output is being reduced to stereo
Headset on Xbox Series X|S Dolby Atmos for Headphones, DTS Headphone:X or Windows Sonic for Headphones Headphone option or balanced Use the format that gives the clearest positional cues without a second virtualizer

PS5: configure headphones correctly

Open the audio-output controls

On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Select the actual output device connected to the console. Sony lists the PULSE Explore, PULSE 3D and PULSE Elite families as compatible headphones, and the same area exposes compatible-headphone equalizer and 3D-audio controls.

Enable Tempest 3D Audio for Headphones

  1. Open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones).
  2. Turn on Enable 3D Audio for Headphones.
  3. Choose the profile that gives you the most natural height and distance cues.
  4. Return to the game and listen to moving sounds, weather, vehicles and voices before changing anything else.

When this option is enabled, the PS5 converts stereo output to 3D audio. That makes the console’s spatial processing the active virtualizer, so avoid enabling another surround virtualizer in headset software unless the headset manufacturer specifically requires it. Two independent processors can make dialogue hollow, shift positional cues or reduce the sense of a stable center image.

Adjust equalization for clarity, not loudness

If your compatible headset exposes an equalizer in the PS5 audio controls, make small changes and judge them with the same scene. Raise the range that carries dialogue only when words are being masked; do not compensate for a poor mix by raising every band. Environmental effects should remain audible because they carry navigation information in open-world games.

PS5: set up a TV, soundbar or AV receiver

Match the HDMI device type

Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and set HDMI Device Type to the equipment actually connected to the PS5. Selecting AV amplifier exposes channel-count and speaker-position options. Those values should describe the speakers in the room; selecting an amplifier when the console is connected directly to ordinary TV speakers can produce an inappropriate layout.

Choose Dolby Atmos only when the chain supports it

For a compatible soundbar, TV or home-theater system, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Audio Format (Priority) > Dolby Atmos. Sony says Tempest 3D AudioTech can be enjoyed through compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled HDMI devices. The console setting is useful only when the connected equipment and the intervening TV or receiver accept that signal. If any part of the chain does not, use the format it supports instead of forcing Atmos.

Keep the game and HDMI system in agreement

Use the game’s home-theater or surround mix when the HDMI system is configured for multichannel output. If the soundbar or receiver reports stereo, first inspect the TV and receiver input and output modes; a passthrough setting that forces stereo defeats the multichannel game mix. Change one device at a time so you know which setting fixed the signal.

Xbox Series X|S: select the spatial format that fits your hardware

Open Volume & audio output

  1. Press the Xbox button.
  2. Open Profile & system > Settings > General > Volume & audio output.
  3. Choose the headset or HDMI audio format that matches the connected equipment.

Xbox Series X|S supports Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Windows Sonic spatial-sound formats. For headsets, Microsoft lists Dolby Atmos for Headphones, DTS Headphone:X and Windows Sonic for Headphones as the available format choices. Select one spatial processor, not several stacked together.

Pick among Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Windows Sonic

  • Dolby Atmos: choose it when your headset or HDMI system is designed for Atmos and the rest of the chain accepts it.
  • DTS:X: use DTS Headphone:X with a compatible headset or DTS:X with a compatible HDMI system.
  • Windows Sonic: select Windows Sonic for Headphones when you want the Xbox headset format that does not require choosing Dolby or DTS processing.

There is no universal winner established for every open-world title. Compare the formats with the same game scene and volume, listening for a centered voice, a stable front-to-back image and distinct nearby effects. Keep the format that makes those cues easiest to identify without making ambience harsh.

Should you use 3D Audio or Dolby Atmos on PS5?

They address different output paths rather than being settings you should normally stack. Use 3D Audio for Headphones when headphones are connected. Use Dolby Atmos when the PS5 is feeding a compatible Atmos-enabled soundbar, TV or home-theater system over HDMI. The correct choice follows the physical device at the end of the signal path.

If you are wearing headphones, selecting an HDMI surround format cannot improve the headphone path. If you are using a soundbar or receiver, a headphone profile is not the right room-speaker layout. When you change devices, revisit both the console output device and the game’s mix option.

In-game mix settings for open-world exploration

Start with balanced, immersive or home-theater

Open-world games combine quiet traversal, weather, wildlife, vehicles, combat and conversations. A balanced or immersive preset is a reliable baseline because it keeps environmental effects present without making music the dominant layer. With speakers or a receiver, select the home-theater or surround option when the console is delivering multichannel audio.

Dialogue-heavy quests

Raise dialogue by one step if conversations are difficult to follow. Lower music before lowering effects: music occupies attention but effects carry movement, incoming threats and the sense of location. After the adjustment, check a scene with both speech and environmental activity so a clearer voice does not come at the cost of missing important cues.

Headphone and binaural options

Night or reduced-dynamic-range mode

Use a night or reduced-dynamic-range setting when late-night play makes loud peaks unacceptable. Compression narrows the difference between quiet ambience and explosions, so listen for whether soft weather, wildlife and distant activity remain audible. Turn it off for full-range immersion when household volume is not a concern.

How to hear footsteps, vehicles and ambience more clearly

  1. Choose the correct output path. Confirm that the console lists the connected headset, TV or HDMI system rather than an old device.
  2. Use one spatial processor. Enable PS5 3D Audio, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X or Windows Sonic according to the device, and avoid a second virtualizer in headset software unless required by its maker.
  3. Protect effects. Keep effects high enough to hear traversal, weather, wildlife and vehicles. If dialogue needs help, lower music first.
  4. Check the game mode. Use headphone or binaural for headphones and home-theater or surround for a configured HDMI system.
  5. Test in motion. Rotate the character while a vehicle, voice or weather source moves across the scene. A good setting keeps the sound anchored as you turn.
  6. Recheck after every hardware change. A headset swap, a new TV input or a receiver mode change can require a new console output selection.

These adjustments improve identification rather than simply increasing volume. Excessive loudness can make every layer compete, while a correctly matched spatial mode preserves direction and distance at a comfortable level.

Full-range immersion versus compressed night listening

Dynamic range is the distance between the quietest ambience and the loudest event. Full-range playback preserves that contrast and is the better starting point when you can listen at a comfortable room volume. Night mode or reduced-dynamic-range playback intentionally narrows it so a sudden explosion does not require turning the whole system down.

Compression is a practical compromise, not a positional-audio upgrade. After enabling it, use a quiet exploration segment and a combat segment to make sure both remain intelligible. If ambience disappears, choose a less aggressive option or return to the full-range mix.

Signal-path checks for TVs, receivers and eARC setups

Console, TV, receiver and soundbar settings must agree. The PS5 and Xbox can offer spatial formats, but the HDMI route determines whether the final device receives multichannel audio. A TV passthrough or receiver input that forces stereo can make a correctly configured console sound flat.

  • Confirm the console is connected to the intended HDMI input.
  • Confirm the TV or receiver identifies the source as multichannel when using a home-theater mix.
  • Check that the selected HDMI device type on PS5 matches the equipment in use.
  • On Xbox, verify that the selected Dolby, DTS or Windows Sonic option matches the headset or HDMI system.
  • If you route audio through a TV to a receiver or soundbar, verify that the TV is not converting the signal to stereo.
  • After changing a cable, input or passthrough mode, repeat a short directional-audio test in the game.

HDMI and eARC accessories matter only in relation to the existing TV and receiver chain. Replacing a cable does not by itself make an incompatible device support Atmos or another spatial format.

Choosing settings by room and play style

Priority Recommended starting point What to monitor
Maximum exploration detail Full-range balanced or immersive mix; effects preserved Weather, wildlife, traversal and distant vehicles remain audible
Following long conversations Raise dialogue one step and reduce music first Voices become clear without losing movement cues
Late-night play Night or reduced-dynamic-range mode Quiet ambience is not buried by compression
Headphone positional accuracy One console spatial processor plus the game’s headphone or binaural mode Stable front-to-back movement and a natural voice center
Soundbar or receiver immersion Home-theater or surround game mix with a matching HDMI format The system receives multichannel audio instead of stereo

Common problems and targeted fixes

Everything sounds wider but less precise

A second surround virtualizer is a common cause. Disable headset-side processing first, leaving the console’s selected spatial mode active. If the game has its own surround toggle, test it separately rather than enabling every option at once.

Dialogue is still masked

Keep effects intact and lower music before making a large dialogue increase. Then test a conversation with nearby environmental activity. If the game’s headphone mode changes the voice character, compare it with the standard balanced mix while keeping the console spatial setting unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Atmos is unavailable or falls back to stereo

Recheck the PS5 HDMI Device Type and the Atmos selection path. Confirm that the connected TV, soundbar or receiver is Atmos-enabled and that the HDMI route accepts the format. On Xbox, select the spatial format designed for the connected hardware and inspect the TV or receiver for a stereo-forcing output mode.

Night mode makes exploration feel empty

Compression may have reduced the contrast that makes ambience noticeable. Return to full range when possible, or choose a milder night setting if the game offers one. Keep the overall volume low enough for the room instead of compensating by boosting every channel.

Directional cues change after moving between TV and headphones

Each device uses a different acoustic path. Select the matching PS5 or Xbox output format, then choose the corresponding in-game headphone or home-theater mix. Do not judge a headphone setting through TV speakers or vice versa.

A repeatable setup and testing procedure

  1. Write down the hardware path. Note whether audio goes directly to headphones, to TV speakers, or through a soundbar or receiver.
  2. Configure the console. On PS5 use Settings > Sound > Audio Output; on Xbox use Xbox button > Profile & system > Settings > General > Volume & audio output.
  3. Select one spatial mode. Match PS5 3D Audio, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X or Windows Sonic to the endpoint.
  4. Choose the game preset. Start with balanced or immersive; use headphone/binaural for headphones and home-theater/surround for multichannel HDMI systems.
  5. Set priorities. Preserve effects, raise dialogue modestly when needed, and reduce music before effects.
  6. Decide on dynamic range. Keep full range for unrestricted listening; use night compression when room volume requires it.
  7. Run the same listening test. Check a quiet traversal scene, a conversation and a combat or vehicle sequence.
  8. Change only one control. This identifies whether the console format, game mix, dynamic range or signal path caused an improvement.

What “best” can and cannot mean

Platform documentation establishes the available spatial formats and their setup paths, but it does not publish a universal preset that is best for every open-world game, headset, room or HDMI chain. There is also no authoritative comparative percentage, latency figure or loudness measurement proving that one preset wins in all cases. The defensible method is device-matched configuration followed by a controlled listening comparison using the same game scenes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your final choice should therefore reflect the way you play. Headphone users normally get the clearest route from the console’s headphone spatial mode and a headphone-aware game mix. HDMI users should prioritize an accurately configured device type, a supported format and a home-theater mix. Everyone benefits from keeping effects audible, lowering music before effects, and treating night compression as a late-listening tool rather than a permanent quality setting.
