These are feature-based fits, not a tested ranking; choose by workflow and verify current plan availability before subscribing.
What makes a project time tracker useful?
A useful tracker connects each time entry to a project or task, then turns the records into information you can act on. Depending on the team, that may mean comparing actual time with estimates, spotting budget overruns, reviewing workload, approving timesheets, or preparing client invoices.

Before comparing products, decide which outcome matters most. A basic timer is not enough if you need approval workflows or billing reports, and a feature-rich billing tool may be unnecessary if your team only needs to understand how long tasks take.
- Time-entry friction: Can people record time with a timer, manual entry, or a workflow that fits their workday?
- Attribution: Can entries be assigned to the right project, task, client, or billable category?
- Control and review: Do you need estimate-versus-actual comparisons, budget alerts, approvals, or workload views?
- Business outputs: Will you use the data for labor costs, profitability, billable reports, or invoices?
- Plan fit: Are the features included in the plan you can buy, or are they limited to higher tiers or an add-on?

Which project time tracker should you choose?
Start with the work you need the records to support, not the longest feature list.
- Choose Toggl Track as a candidate if estimates, project budget alerts, and profitability reporting are central to your review process.
- Choose Harvest as a candidate if tracked hours need to flow into client budgets, approvals, and invoices.
- Choose Asana as a candidate if your team already manages tasks in Asana and wants time recorded against those tasks and surfaced in dashboards.
Before rollout, check the current plan and limits on the vendor’s pages, then test the intended workflow with the people who will enter and review time. In particular, confirm that entries can be attributed correctly, that managers can access the reports or approvals they need, and that any add-on or higher-tier requirement fits the budget. These checks help distinguish a tool that merely records hours from one that supports your project controls or billing process.
