Change one setting at a time, reconnect after protocol changes, and use a streaming-optimized server only when you are accessing content you are authorized to watch in that region.
Recommended PIA settings at a glance
These choices prioritize a fast connection without leaving common privacy protections disabled. They are a baseline, not a guarantee that one configuration will be fastest on every ISP, Wi-Fi network, Windows PC, or server. If a network blocks a protocol, compatibility takes priority over the default.

| Setting | Speed-oriented choice | Privacy or compatibility choice | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protocol | WireGuard | OpenVPN when WireGuard is blocked or unreliable | VPN protocol and port blocking varies by network. |
| Server | Choose Automatically or a nearby location | Streaming-optimized server in the permitted region | Streaming compatibility can differ between servers in the same country. |
| Kill switch | VPN Kill Switch | Advanced Kill Switch | Advanced mode blocks all internet traffic while PIA is disconnected. |
| Split tunneling | Off, or limited to a specific app | Only VPN for apps that must never go direct | Bypassed traffic leaves the VPN; DNS behavior depends on the Windows setting. |
| MACE | Optional | On for DNS-level ad, tracker, and malicious-domain blocking | It is a DNS blocker, not a replacement for the encrypted VPN tunnel. |
| Multi-Hop | Off | On when an additional relay is worth the speed loss | Windows Multi-Hop works only with OpenVPN and adds another server hop. |
| WireGuard MTU | Auto | Change only while diagnosing a specific connection problem | PIA recommends Auto for most users. |
| Port forwarding | Off | Enable only for an inbound-port requirement | The port is assigned automatically and the feature is unavailable on US server locations. |
Open the correct controls in the Windows app
PIA puts the relevant controls in separate tabs. Open the app, click the three-dot menu, choose Settings, and use the Protocols, Network, Privacy, and Split Tunnel tabs. Disconnect before changing the protocol, apply the change, and reconnect so the new tunnel is actually used.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Launch the PIA Windows application and disconnect if it is connected.
- Open the three-dot menu and select Settings.
- Use Protocols for WireGuard or OpenVPN and protocol-specific options such as MTU.
- Use Network for connection behavior and kill-switch controls exposed there.
- Use Privacy for MACE, Multi-Hop and related privacy features.
- Use Split Tunnel to add applications and choose whether each one uses or bypasses the VPN.
- Reconnect and verify the result in the app before testing a website, game or streaming service.
Choose WireGuard first, then keep OpenVPN as the fallback
Why WireGuard is the normal starting point
WireGuard is PIA’s lightweight modern protocol option, designed for strong security with low overhead. That usually makes it the sensible first choice for browsing, video calls, downloads and streaming. It is not a promise of a particular speed: distance to the server, local congestion, Wi-Fi quality, CPU load and the network’s treatment of VPN traffic can matter more than the protocol label.

PIA advertises servers capable of up to 10 Gbps on its download page. That is a vendor capability claim, not an independent Windows speed test, and it does not mean an individual home connection will reach that rate.
When OpenVPN is the better choice
Switch to OpenVPN when WireGuard will not connect, repeatedly drops, or is blocked by a work, hotel, school or public network. OpenVPN can also be useful when a particular network permits its traffic but interferes with WireGuard ports. Disconnect before changing the protocol, reconnect afterward, and test the same server so that you are comparing the protocol rather than two different routes.
How to compare protocols fairly
- Use the same server location and the same device.
- Run the same test at roughly the same time, preferably over wired Ethernet or the same Wi-Fi position.
- Check download, upload, latency and stability rather than download speed alone.
- Try more than one nearby server; a busy server can make a good protocol look slow.
There is no universal Windows benchmark showing one protocol is always fastest for every ISP and server. Treat WireGuard as the default and OpenVPN as the compatibility tool.

Pick a server for the job
Everyday browsing and maximum speed
Choose Choose Automatically first. If the automatic result is slow or unstable, select a nearby server manually. A geographically close location usually reduces latency and the number of networks between you and the VPN, although local load can outweigh distance.

Authorized access to a home-region streaming library
Select the matching streaming-optimized server in the region where you are permitted to use the service. After connecting, reload the website or fully restart the streaming app. Streaming platforms can identify and restrict individual VPN addresses, so another server in the same region may work when the first does not.
Use this only for lawful, permitted access. PIA’s terms prohibit using the service to circumvent geographic restrictions or violate copyright.
Why an apparently nearby server can still be slow
- The selected location may be busy at that moment.
- Your ISP may have a congested route to that location.
- The streaming service or website may be limiting that server’s address range.
- A high-latency Wi-Fi link, browser extension, or local download may be the real bottleneck.
Configure the kill switch without locking yourself out
VPN Kill Switch for normal protection
Turn on VPN Kill Switch when you want PIA to block internet traffic if the VPN disconnects. This prevents applications from silently falling back to your ordinary connection during a drop. PIA describes the kill switch as a feature that disables internet access when the VPN disconnects to prevent leaks.
Advanced Kill Switch for an always-VPN policy
Use Advanced Kill Switch only when you want traffic blocked even while PIA itself is turned off. It is appropriate for a device that must never communicate outside the tunnel, but it can look like an internet outage if you forget that the VPN is disabled. Turn it off temporarily if you need direct internet access for troubleshooting or captive-portal sign-in.

What to do after a disconnect
- Check whether PIA is still connected or waiting for authentication.
- If the kill switch is blocking traffic, reconnect to the same or another nearby server.
- If the connection will not establish, switch from WireGuard to OpenVPN, reconnect, and test again.
- For a hotel, airport or café network, sign in to its captive portal first if necessary; Advanced Kill Switch may prevent that until it is temporarily disabled.
Use split tunneling only for a defined exception
Leave split tunneling off unless you can name the application or IP address that needs different routing. Every exception creates traffic that does not receive the VPN tunnel’s protection.
Only VPN
Choose Only VPN for applications that must never connect directly, such as a work tool or a privacy-sensitive client. If the VPN is unavailable, that app should be unable to reach the internet rather than silently using the normal connection.
Bypass VPN
Choose Bypass VPN for an app that must use the ordinary connection while the rest of Windows remains protected. Typical legitimate examples include a local-network utility, a banking application that fails on a VPN address, or a service that your organization requires to see the local network. Bypassed traffic is outside PIA protection.
Windows DNS behavior
On Windows, choose whether DNS follows the app rules or always uses PIA DNS. If DNS follows app rules, a bypassed application and its name lookups can use the normal connection; if DNS is forced through PIA, name resolution may continue through PIA even when an app itself bypasses the tunnel. Select the mode that matches your privacy and compatibility requirement, then test the specific application.

Example: excluding one streaming app
- Open Settings from the three-dot menu and select Split Tunnel.
- Add the streaming app’s Windows executable.
- Set that entry to Bypass VPN only if the service must use your normal connection and you accept that it is outside PIA protection.
- Reconnect PIA, fully quit and reopen the app, then test playback.
MACE: useful filtering, not a speed switch
MACE is PIA’s DNS-based blocker for advertising, tracking and malicious-content domains. It is disabled by default and is optional. Enable it when reducing those requests is more important than maximum compatibility with a site that depends on an advertising or tracking domain.
MACE does not replace the VPN tunnel, antivirus software, browser security settings or careful downloads. If a page breaks after enabling it, test with MACE off and add a site-specific exception through the site’s own settings where available rather than weakening every other protection.
Keep Multi-Hop off unless the extra relay has a clear purpose
Multi-Hop routes traffic through two servers. The second hop can make correlation or tracing more difficult in some threat models, but it adds distance, processing and another possible point of congestion. PIA’s Windows guide states that Multi-Hop is available only with OpenVPN. Leave it off for ordinary browsing, gaming and streaming; enable it only when the additional relay is worth the expected speed and latency cost.
Leave MTU on Auto and avoid casual port forwarding
MTU
WireGuard MTU should remain Auto for most users, as PIA recommends. Change it only while diagnosing a specific symptom such as pages that partially load, repeated fragmentation, or a tunnel that connects but cannot pass certain traffic. Record the original value so you can restore it after testing.
Best Value
Port forwarding
Port forwarding is not a general speed setting. Use it only when an application genuinely needs an inbound port. PIA assigns the port automatically, and the feature is unavailable on US server locations. Enabling it without a requirement increases configuration complexity without improving ordinary browsing or streaming.
Fix streaming problems in the right order
When a permitted streaming service stops working, change one variable at a time. This sequence avoids confusing a server issue with a protocol or browser-cache issue.
- Connect to the service’s matching regional streaming-optimized server.
- Reload the website or fully restart the affected application after the VPN connection is established.
- If playback still fails, disconnect and try another server in the same region.
- Switch between WireGuard and OpenVPN, reconnecting after the change. A work or public network may block one protocol or its ports.
- If only one application or website needs the ordinary connection, add it under Split Tunnel and choose Bypass VPN. Remember that the bypassed traffic is outside PIA protection.
Interpret common symptoms
- PIA connects, but the service shows the wrong region: confirm the server location, reconnect, and restart the app or reload the site.
- The app reports a VPN or proxy error: try another server in the same permitted region, then test OpenVPN if WireGuard is being blocked.
- Video starts but buffers: move to a nearby or less busy server, turn Multi-Hop off, and check whether another device is consuming the connection.
- Only one app fails: test that app with split tunneling disabled, then add a narrowly scoped Bypass VPN rule only if required.
- Nothing reaches the internet after a disconnect: inspect VPN Kill Switch and Advanced Kill Switch before changing unrelated Windows network settings.
Practical profiles for different Windows users
| Use case | Protocol | Server | Other settings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fast everyday browsing | WireGuard | Choose Automatically or nearby | VPN Kill Switch on; split tunnel off; MACE optional; Multi-Hop off; MTU Auto. |
| Streaming in an authorized home region | WireGuard first | Matching streaming-optimized server | Reload or restart after connecting; try another same-region server before changing other settings. |
| Restricted work or public network | OpenVPN if WireGuard fails | Nearby or permitted location | Reconnect after changing protocol; keep Advanced Kill Switch off if a captive portal is required. |
| Strict application privacy | WireGuard or OpenVPN as connectivity permits | Nearby trusted location | Only VPN for selected apps; VPN Kill Switch on; consider Advanced Kill Switch for an always-VPN device. |
| Extra relay against a stronger tracing concern | OpenVPN | Available Multi-Hop route | Multi-Hop on only when its latency and throughput cost is acceptable. |
How to test a change without losing the baseline
Save a simple note of the original profile: protocol, server, kill-switch mode, split-tunnel entries, MACE state, Multi-Hop state and MTU. Change one item, reconnect, and test the same website or application. If the result is worse, restore the previous value instead of changing several settings at once. This makes it possible to identify whether the cause was protocol blocking, server load, DNS behavior, or an application rule.
For speed testing, compare latency and stability as well as throughput. A server that produces a higher peak download number but frequent reconnects is a worse choice for calls or live video. Your actual result is constrained by the internet plan and local network; a 10-Gbps server capability claim does not turn a slower access line into a 10-Gbps connection.
Security and privacy boundaries to understand
- A kill switch helps prevent fallback traffic during a VPN drop, but it cannot protect traffic from an application you intentionally placed in Bypass VPN.
- MACE blocks domains through DNS; it does not inspect every page or file and is not a substitute for endpoint security.
- Multi-Hop adds a relay and latency; it is not automatically safer for every activity than a stable single-hop connection.
- Split-tunnel DNS choices can change where name lookups occur, so select the DNS mode deliberately rather than assuming all traffic follows the same path.
- Streaming availability is not guaranteed by a particular server label. Services can change their detection and access rules, and PIA’s terms prohibit circumvention of geographic restrictions or copyright violations.
Final recommended baseline
Start with WireGuard, Choose Automatically or a nearby server, VPN Kill Switch, split tunneling off, MACE optional, Multi-Hop off, WireGuard MTU Auto and port forwarding off. For authorized regional streaming, use the matching streaming-optimized server and restart the service after connecting. If a network blocks WireGuard, move to OpenVPN; if one server fails, try another in the same region. This sequence keeps the configuration understandable while giving you a targeted way to trade speed for compatibility or additional privacy.
