The most private alternatives to cloud AI chatbots run models on hardware you control. LM Studio is the simplest desktop starting point; Ollama is a local model runtime; Open WebUI adds a self-hosted browser interface; GPT4All and AnythingLLM focus on chatting with private documents; and PrivateGPT provides an application and API layer for developers. Your choice depends on how completely you need to disconnect from cloud services, whether you need document retrieval, how many people will use it, and what your computer can run.

Best private chatbot alternatives at a glance

These projects occupy different layers of a local-AI system, so they are not interchangeable products. LM Studio and GPT4All bundle a desktop experience. Ollama is mainly a runtime that loads and serves models. Open WebUI is an interface that connects to runtimes and providers. AnythingLLM emphasizes document workspaces, while PrivateGPT is an application layer for building private AI products.

Option Primary role Interface Private-document support Provider and model flexibility Best fit
LM Studio Bundled local model desktop Desktop chat and local server Local document chat and RAG Download and run local models; OpenAI-compatible local endpoints Beginners who want one application
Ollama Local model runtime Runtime and API; add a separate UI for chat Depends on the interface and local retrieval components you connect Designed to be combined with interfaces such as Open WebUI Modular stacks, scripts and developer workflows
Open WebUI Self-hosted interface layer Browser-based Can support document workflows, but extraction and embeddings must also be local for an offline setup Connects to Ollama, llama.cpp, vLLM and other providers ChatGPT-style access for one or many users
GPT4All Desktop local chat with retrieval Desktop application Local documents through retrieval-augmented generation Local model workflow Simple private document chat
AnythingLLM Document-focused workspace Workspace interface Built around document workflows and local deployment options Includes a built-in local provider; verify current provider and hardware support Teams or individuals organizing knowledge by workspace
PrivateGPT Application and API layer Developer-oriented application interfaces Private retrieval applications on your infrastructure Separates the application layer from runners such as Ollama, LM Studio, vLLM and llama.cpp Developers building a private AI product

No defensible cross-product benchmark establishes a universal winner for response quality, speed, privacy or cost. Local performance depends on the model, quantization, processor, graphics hardware, memory, storage and the surrounding retrieval stack.

What “private” actually means

Privacy is a boundary you configure, not a label attached to a user interface. A local model can keep prompts and responses on your computer, but a self-hosted front end may still send data to a cloud model, hosted search engine, external authentication service or remote embedding API.

Local inference

When inference runs on your own computer or server, the prompt, response and model interaction can remain inside that environment. Ollama states that it does not collect, store, transmit or have access to prompts, responses, model interactions or other content processed locally. That statement applies to local processing; Ollama distinguishes it from use of cloud-hosted models.

LM Studio’s offline documentation similarly says that chats with local models and documents uploaded for retrieval-augmented generation can remain on the device. Downloading a model is different from sending a prompt to a hosted service: after the model is present, inference can be performed without an internet connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Every dependency matters

A private document workflow normally contains more components than the language model:

  • Inference: generates the answer from the model.
  • Embeddings: convert document passages into vectors for retrieval.
  • Extraction and OCR: turn PDFs, scans and office files into searchable text.
  • Reranking: improves which passages are supplied to the model.
  • Search: may call a hosted web index unless replaced with a local or disconnected option.
  • Speech: transcription and voice synthesis can be local or network services.
  • Authentication and telemetry: may contact external servers even when the model is local.

Open WebUI describes itself as a self-hosted platform that can run entirely offline, but its offline guidance warns that a local interface does not automatically make every dependency local. Disable cloud providers and hosted tools, and verify each service before placing sensitive files in a workspace.

LM Studio: easiest desktop starting point

LM Studio is the most straightforward choice when you want a graphical application rather than a collection of services. It combines model downloads, local chat, document chat and a local server in one desktop package. Its offline documentation says that nothing entered while chatting with local models leaves the device and that documents used for local retrieval remain on the machine.

How the workflow fits together

  1. Install LM Studio on the computer that will hold your models and documents.
  2. Use its model-download function to place a compatible model on that computer.
  3. Start a chat with the downloaded local model and confirm that you are not using a hosted provider.
  4. For document questions, add files to the document-chat workflow and check that retrieval is configured locally.
  5. If another application needs access, enable LM Studio’s local server and use its OpenAI-compatible endpoint from that application.

The bundled design reduces integration work, but it does not remove hardware constraints. Larger models require more memory and storage, and document retrieval adds indexing and extraction overhead. The official material does not establish a universal model-size, speed or quality recommendation, so select a model your computer can load and test it with representative prompts.

Choose LM Studio when

  • You prefer a desktop interface over terminal commands.
  • You want local chat and local document retrieval in the same application.
  • You need a local API for an automation tool but do not want to assemble a runtime and web interface separately.

Ollama: a runtime for a modular private stack

Ollama is primarily the engine that downloads, loads and serves local models. It is not, by itself, a complete browser chatbot. Pair it with an interface such as Open WebUI when you want a ChatGPT-style experience, or call its local service from scripts and applications.

Why developers choose it

  • It keeps model execution separate from the user interface.
  • Other applications can use the local runtime instead of embedding model-management code.
  • You can replace the interface without moving your model files or changing the privacy boundary of local inference.

Ollama’s privacy policy distinguishes local processing from cloud-hosted model use. Before a sensitive session, verify which model and provider the interface selected; a local runtime does not prevent an application from routing a request elsewhere if a cloud provider is enabled.

Pairing Ollama with a browser interface

  1. Install Ollama on the machine that will run inference.
  2. Download a model through Ollama and run a local test prompt.
  3. Install Open WebUI on the same machine or on a server that can reach Ollama over a protected local network.
  4. In Open WebUI, select the Ollama connection rather than a hosted provider.
  5. For document chat, configure local embedding, extraction and any reranking services; otherwise those steps may still use the network.

Expose the runtime only to trusted networks. A local API that is reachable from the public internet is not private merely because the model files are on your server.

Open WebUI: a self-hosted ChatGPT-style interface

Open WebUI supplies the browser experience many people expect from a modern chatbot while leaving the model provider configurable. It supports Ollama, llama.cpp, vLLM and other providers. This makes it useful as a common front end for a single computer, a home server or an internal team deployment.

Local and hosted connections are different

Its provider documentation separates local servers from hosted APIs that require accounts and keys. Selecting a hosted connection changes the data policy for that conversation. For a fully offline deployment, use a local model server, local embeddings, local extraction and local authentication, and disable hosted search and other cloud tools.

When Open WebUI is the right layer

  • You want browser access instead of a desktop-only application.
  • Several people need a shared interface while models remain on an organization-controlled server.
  • You expect to change runtimes or providers without redesigning the chat interface.
  • You need administration and access controls, but can operate the server and protect its network exposure.

Self-hosting adds operational responsibility: updates, backups, user accounts, logs, secrets and firewall rules are now yours. Treat those controls as part of the privacy design rather than assuming the interface handles them automatically.

GPT4All: simple local document chat

GPT4All’s desktop application is aimed at interacting with local language models and local documents through retrieval-augmented generation. It is a practical fit when the main requirement is asking questions about files without building a separate web stack.

Document workflow

  1. Install the desktop application on a computer where the files may remain locally.
  2. Download and select a local model.
  3. Add a document collection to the retrieval workflow.
  4. Ask questions that require citations or passage-level checking, then open the source passages before relying on the answer.
  5. Keep the computer offline or block outbound connections if your policy requires a disconnected workflow, and verify that all retrieval components still operate.

Retrieval improves access to your files but does not guarantee factual answers. The model can misread an extracted table, omit a relevant passage or answer beyond the evidence. Keep the original documents and validate important results.

AnythingLLM: document-focused workspaces

AnythingLLM is designed around document-oriented workspaces rather than a single undifferentiated chat history. Its documentation describes a built-in local provider powered by Lemonade and supports local deployment configurations.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

What to verify before deployment

  • Confirm that the current release includes the local provider you intend to use.
  • Check hardware support for the selected model and provider.
  • Identify where uploaded files, extracted text, embeddings and chat history are stored.
  • Disable cloud model, search or embedding integrations when the workspace must remain offline.

Its workspace approach is useful for separating projects, clients or departments, but separation is only as strong as your storage permissions and account configuration. A private model does not automatically create multi-user isolation.

PrivateGPT: an application layer for developers

PrivateGPT targets developers who want to build Claude-style private AI products on infrastructure they control. It is an application and API layer, not a replacement for every model runner. Its documentation distinguishes it from runners such as Ollama, LM Studio, vLLM and llama.cpp.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use it when you are building a product

  • You need to embed private retrieval or chat into an internal application.
  • You want to choose the model runner independently from your application logic.
  • You need APIs, repeatable deployment and control over where data is processed.

Plan the complete pipeline: model serving, document ingestion, embeddings, storage, authentication, logging and updates. If any one of those services is hosted elsewhere, document that boundary for users and administrators.

How to choose among the options

Choose by privacy boundary

  • Strictly offline: select a local runtime and verify local embeddings, extraction, reranking, speech, search and authentication. Disconnect the machine or enforce outbound firewall rules after installation.
  • Local model with selective cloud tools: use a configurable interface such as Open WebUI, but label which tools can leave the network and keep sensitive conversations on local models.
  • Private server for a team: use a self-hosted interface, protect the server, configure accounts and backups, and document administrator access to stored conversations.

Choose by interface

  • Desktop and minimal setup: LM Studio or GPT4All.
  • Browser access: Open WebUI connected to a local runtime.
  • Developer API: Ollama as the runtime, or PrivateGPT when you need an application layer around retrieval and model serving.
  • Document workspaces: AnythingLLM, GPT4All or LM Studio, depending on whether you prefer a workspace model or a bundled desktop application.

Choose by operational burden

A bundled desktop application reduces installation and administration work. A modular runtime-plus-interface stack gives more control but creates more components to update, secure and troubleshoot. A developer application layer provides the most flexibility and the largest engineering obligation.

  1. Prepare the machine. Choose a computer with enough memory, storage and processing capacity for the model and document index. Keep sensitive files on encrypted storage and restrict operating-system accounts.
  2. Install the runtime. Use LM Studio, Ollama or another supported local runner. Download model files before disconnecting from the internet.
  3. Test local inference. Generate a response while offline and confirm that the application reports a local model or local endpoint.
  4. Add the interface. Use the desktop application directly or connect Open WebUI to the local runtime. Do not enter cloud API keys into a system intended to remain disconnected.
  5. Configure document processing. Install or enable local extraction, OCR, embeddings and reranking. A local chat model alone is insufficient for private document retrieval.
  6. Disable network features. Turn off hosted models, web search, external authentication, telemetry and automatic remote integrations where policy requires it.
  7. Verify network behavior. Test with the network disconnected, review firewall logs and inspect the configured provider list.
  8. Control access and retention. Protect the server, restrict users, define where chat histories and indexes are stored, and create encrypted backups if recovery is required.

Hardware, cost and quality trade-offs

Running locally replaces a provider’s infrastructure with your own. You supply the computer, model storage, electricity, maintenance and backups. The available data does not establish a universal hardware specification or recurring price for any of these projects, and model requirements vary by architecture and quantization.

  • Memory: must hold the model and the runtime’s working context; document retrieval and multiple users increase demand.
  • Storage: model files, extracted documents, vector indexes, logs and backups can consume substantially more space than the interface itself.
  • Processing: a capable GPU can reduce response latency, while CPU-only inference may be adequate for lighter models and occasional use.
  • Capacity planning: serving several users or long contexts requires more headroom than a single short chat.

Local privacy also involves a quality trade-off. Cloud services may offer larger models and managed search, while local systems offer control and predictable data boundaries. No official cross-product test in the available documentation proves that one option is universally faster or more accurate.

Common failure modes and fixes

The interface is local but documents still leave the network

Cause: hosted embeddings, OCR, reranking or extraction. Fix: replace each component with a local implementation, disable the hosted integration and repeat an offline test.

Ollama appears installed but there is no chatbot

Cause: Ollama is a runtime rather than a full user interface. Fix: use its local API from an application or add a browser interface such as Open WebUI.

Document answers are poor

Cause: scanned pages were not extracted correctly, the wrong passages were retrieved, or the model lacks enough context. Fix: verify OCR and extraction, inspect retrieved passages, adjust chunking or retrieval settings, and ask narrower questions tied to the source text.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The local server is exposed publicly

Cause: a listening port was forwarded or authentication was omitted. Fix: bind services to trusted interfaces, close unnecessary firewall openings, require authentication and place remote access behind a protected network or VPN.

The computer runs out of resources

Cause: the model, context window, index or concurrent sessions exceed available memory or storage. Fix: use a smaller model, shorten context, reduce simultaneous sessions, move indexes to faster storage or upgrade the machine.

Practical recommendations

  • First local experiment: start with LM Studio if you want the fewest moving parts.
  • Modular home server: run Ollama and add Open WebUI for browser access.
  • Private files on a desktop: choose GPT4All, LM Studio or AnythingLLM according to whether you prefer a simple collection, bundled chat or workspace organization.
  • Internal product: use PrivateGPT or a comparable application layer with a separately managed local runner.
  • Highest privacy: build an offline stack and audit every dependency, not just the language model.

The central decision is not which logo resembles a cloud chatbot. It is where each stage of your request is processed, who can administer that system, and how much setup and hardware you are prepared to maintain.
